15lber taken on a large Willie Gunn from a discoloured flooded Slaney

Despite varied conditions over the past 10 days with a dirty flood at the weekend the river continues to produce good sport for those who persevere including some beautifully sealiced springers. Fish have now been caught on most lower river beats where angling activity has been concentrated. The fish are still not showing in the cold water. I am sure if the up stream beats were out in force there would be fish to be caught.

Mossy Brown accounted for his first Slaney springer on Monday despite a fairly dirty flood. The circa 15lber took a very large Willie Gunn fished deep.

Atlantic weather brings renewed hope, fish and growth at Delphi

David Parry's 9lb 6oz fish

David McEvoy reports from Delphi: 15/04/2013:

As of yesterday our Atlantic weather returned with a vengeance. The river looked totally different with water in it and with the milder weather one could almost hear the grass grow All lakes were unfishable and people had difficulty standing up on the river not alone casting a fly.

Before I start waxing lyrically about the fish we have caught today, I must first of all compliment all the anglers we had last week who persisted fishing in the face of adversity. Adversity of course being dreadful fishing conditions. In fairness there was a fish or two risen but to no avail. Some of our anglers even tried fishing the small Brown Trout lakes but the brownies were not even taking. So well done to all of you and sorry I can’t organise the conditions.

The river rose to 50 yesterday but was almost impossible to fish with the wind. There was a good tide yesterday evening and I saw a number of fish entering the river, which was indeed a welcome sight. Sadly none of them were in the taking mood.

Today however is a different story with 3 caught on the lakes so far.

Rob Fanshawe with Terry Johnson at the helm had the first of the day, off Doolough weighing in at 11lbs.

Bob Hadden got off to a great start with a fish 8lbs8ozs off Finlough on a Willie Gunn. Hopefully it will be his first of many for the week.

David Parry , a member of John Faith’s party managed to land his first ever salmon off a lake. It weighed in at 9lbs6ozs and was taken from Fin Stream on a Willie Gunn.

With conditions looking good for the next few days I would be very hopeful that we will get plenty of fish this week!!

GALLAGHER THE BOY FROM ATHBOY

David Gallagher of Athboy produced one of the best rainbow Trout from the Whitelake in recent times. David’s fish rattled the scales at 7lbs, and was caught on the fly. Super fish and we hope to here more from David in the coming season from his Angling Adventures.

LENE BUZZING WITH ANGLERS

Stuart Kileen with a cracking 3lb trout.

Lough Lene was certainly buzzing with anglers in recent days, as the first duck- Fly stated to hatch. Unfortunally the Peadar Caffrey Cup was cancelled on Sunday, due to strong winds, but many anglers ventured out and fished sheltered shores. I met a few great characters on Lene, and Stuart Killeen had a cracking Brown trout of 3lbs, while Ken Murray of the 2009 Meath Shooting team hit the target with a beautiful rainbow also pushing towards 3lbs. George Kelly from Wexford had his Grandsons out and Cian Ennis, and brother Aaron had a super day on Saturday. Not even the rain could dampen their spirits.

Lough Derg :

Paul Burke and Danny Tiernan from Irishfishingtours.com had some excellent early season trout fishing on Lough Derg.  Trout ranging from 11lbs 8 ozs to 6 lbs have been caught by themselves and visiting anglers on a variety of lures from deep diving crank baits to dead roach fished close to the bottom .

Ron Gates, USA caught his first brown trout of 11 lbs 8 oz trolling lures.  Ron is a bass fisherman from New York State and competes in professional bass tournaments in the US.

Diego Scilia from Italy caught a 6 lbs 5 oz trout he caught jerk baiting for pike in Garrykennedy, Lough Derg.

Diego Scilia, Italy with another fine fish, this time a pike weighing 16lbs caught casting an X-Buster pike lure while on a fishing holiday on Lough Derg.

Youths Fund Raising Competition fished Lough Owel Sunday 7th April 2013.

Congratulations go to renowned Galway angler Robert Reilly on winning a 19’ Sheelin boat in the Irish Trout Fly fishing Associations’s (ITFFA) youths fundraising competition, which was held at Lough Owel on 7th April 2013. Robert, who is from Loughrea, is no stranger to the fly angling scene having represented Ireland at international level on numerous occasions. Robert who also coached the 2012 Irish team that won gold at the international match on Lough Sheelin was partnered with his son Ciaran who will represent the Irish Youths Team in 2013.

With a boat for 1st Prize and a Climb8 wetsuit for the heaviest fish this competition was certain to be a success from the outset. Conditions were extremely tough with a bitter cold easterly wind; however despite the poor conditions eighty four anglers turned out to support this event. Lough Owel lived up to her reputation as a premier brown trout fishery with 104 fish being presented for weighing and scores more fish being returned to the water alive.

Lough Owel is an excellent brown trout venue and is well worth a visit. Anglers could try fishing a silver or claret dabbler in the shallow water and with the weather set to warm up over the coming week there should be little action to be had on duckfly patterns also.

Other Results were as follows:-

1st Robert Reilly 3.450 kg                              6th Dylan Ennis (Juvenile Angler) 2.565kg

2nd Gary Binley 3.110 kg                              7th Ciaran Reilly (Juvenile Angler) 2.545kg

3rd Gearoid Kirwin 2.870 kg                           8th Greg Long 2.51kg

4th Eddie Harte 2.780 kg                                9th Mel Campbell 2.485kg

5th Larry Gibb 2.740 kg                                  10th Peter Byrne 2.475 kg

Heaviest Fish 1.970kg Jackie Coyne

Secret Weight (1.346kg) Danny Cole

The ITFFA Youths Committee would like to extend their gratitude all who supported this event including Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association, Inland Fisheries Ireland, the participants and those who sponsored prizes; all funds raised will be used to support juvenile anglers.

In the attached photograph boat winner Robert Reilly is pictured with his son Ciaran Reilly.

The ITFFA fish off was held on Owel on Saturday the 13th of April 2013.

The ITFFA fish off was held on Owel on Saturday the 13th of April.  The “Fish Off” was held at Lough Owel (Tullaghan Shore).   This purpose of this match is to select the 8 anglers who will retain their position on the Irish International Teams for 2014. This competition was fished on a “Catch & Release” basis and a minimum size limit of 32cm applied. Whilst fishing conditions were tough with a brisk south-easterly breeze, Lough Owel still provided some great action with anglers requiring at least four trout to secure position on the Irish Team for 2014. The following anglers will represent Ireland in the 2014 International Match’s.

1st Kenneth O’Keeffe 10 fish for 3040 points

2nd Andy Duncan 9 fish for 2970 points

3rd Robert Reilly 6 fish for 2460 points

4th Gerry Dixon 6 fish for 2370 points

5th Mick O’Farrell 7 fish for 2350 points

6th Seamus Kelly 5 fish for 2030 points

7th John Willis 4 fish for 1390 points

8th Peter Byrne 4 fish for 1300 points

Salmon Fishing slow on the River Feale

River Feale by Matt Nolan

There hasn’t been much angling activity on the Feale or its tributaries since the fishery opened on 1st March.  The lack of angling activity according to the local fishery inspector Paddy Halpin, who knows all things about this system, is due to the almost arctic weather conditions and also due to the catch being limited to catch and release until 11th May.

Paddy Halpin is also anxious to point out that between 1st March and 11th May anglers are confined to fish with barbless hooks, and worm fishing is banned.

There is likely to be good salmon fishing available next week here as the water conditions seem ideal and the weather forecast is for a milder week.

Flying C's search out salmon on the Lee

Paul Hanely made the most of yesterday’s beautiful weather and headed to the Lee. The water seemed to be about 8C  – the warmest it has been for a few weeks. Paul fished a size four flying “c” down the run.  He hadn’t moved anything and just as he was about to move further upstream a small salmon head and tailed above him. He quickly covered the fish and took bottom with a few casts but as the fish did not respond he cast wider, touching bottom with every cast but no pull or touch.
The salmon showed once more and it seemed to be sitting high in the water so Paul changed over to a smaller size three flying “c” and met the fish on his second cast! The salmon came in to fight close to the bank and kept rolling on itself making for a nervous few minutes. After tailing the salmon it was clear it  was very fresh – a hatchery salmon of about six pounds. Letting the salmon rest up for a few moments Paul then  released it back in to the river. In Paul’s own words “If only all spring fishing days could be so perfect, nice warm sunshine and an obliging salmon”.
