Good pike for Dutch anglers in Boyle

After a short break, pike expert Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland is back on the water guiding clients in the Boyle area. Read his short report below…

Apologies for skipping the whole month of September, but our guest  Jarno and Maurice started October well with 20 fish for their weekend and a metre pike each.

The lure anglers from the Netherlands are repeat guests, and for Jarno the recent trip went particularly well as he caught a new personal best pike measuring exactly 100cm. Well done guys and hope to see you back next season.!

Great fishing in tough Conditions for Dutch anglers off Wicklow

Plenty spurdog to specimen size for Dutch anglers

Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters had great fishing over the last couple of days with a group of Dutch anglers sent over by Bert Goeree Tightlines, Netherlands. There was even a specimen caught.

It was a great effort from the anglers in very tough conditions. The big female tope are still in deeper water so the trip took them out into a rough sea. But it was the way to go and it paid off in the end. There were 40 sharks to the boat on the first day and 70 yesterday. There were spurdogs for everyone, PBs broken on Bullhuss, Tope and Spurdog, and a specimen Spurdog for the marshal, Marcel Aalbregt.

The best fish included porcupine shark (spurdog) 95 cm for Ton, rough shark (Tope) 152 cm for Alex and cat shark (bullhuss) of 101 cm,  cat shark (bullhuss) 96 cm for Lars, Marcel had a cat shark (bullhuss) 106 cm and porcupine shark (spurdog) of 107cm.

The guys have another 4 days of fishing ahead of them. Good luck!

Go fishing…

Robertas Zilaitis wins 2024 Celtic Masters Feeder Festival at Inniscarra

Last week the 2024 Celtic Masters Feeder Festival was fished over 5 days at Inniscarra…

Day one of the 2024 Celtic Masters Feeder Festival saw 49 anglers eagerly set out in pursuit of placing their name on the Celtic Masters Perpetual Shield.

After a horrendous 24 hours of rain and wind the day before (29 September) all sections suffered with reduced weights across the board. Given this the average weight of 9.150kg is pretty impressive.

Winner on the day was Robertas Zilaitis with 14.450kg from O’Neill’s Quarry (Boat Section), closely followed in second place by local venue expert Ken Ince from the end peg on O’Neill’s Quarry weighing 13.550kg. 3rd place went to Inniscarra regular, Dutch angler John Kooij with 12.570kg from the 2nd boat section at Walshestown.

Day 2 saw catches improve across all sections. Winner on the day came from The Graveyard where Neil Richards bagged 17.775kg of roach and hybrids. 2nd place on the day went to Dutch angler Gerrit De Groot fishing out of Walshestown with a weight of 16.750kg. Whilst over at The Pumphouse 3nd place today went to the ever consistent Ken Ince with a weight of 14.400kg boosting him into first place.

Section winners on the day were:

Robertas Zilaitis
Peter Koopman
Neil Mazurek
Henk Roskam
Chris Haigh
Tom Thackrway
Tony Brunt
Willem Multem
Julian Kendrick

Great craic was had at the Piggery after the match. The Heat Hut Sauna was a popular feature where it was more like a summer’s evening than the 1st of October.

Day 3 saw catches decline, as high pressure and an east wind pushed the fish up in the water column, making for a difficult day across the board. Winner on the day today came from Fountain House where Dave Micklewright made no mistakes and topped the scales with 13.175kg staying with Fountain House 2nd place today went to Dutch angler Willem Van De Helm with a weight of 12.300kg. Next it is off to O’Neill’s Quarry where the deep water has seen Dutch angler Michel Diepstraten put an impressive 11.825kg in the weigh sling to take 3rd place.

Section winners on the day were:

Neil Richards
Robertas Zilaitis
Gerrit De Groot
John Kooij
Henk Roskam
Tom Thackrway
Marc Berg
Julian Kendrick
Willem Multem
Leo Koot

Day 3’s results saw a shake up at the top with Neil Richards and Robertas Zilaitis moving into first and second places. With two days of fishing left it was extremely tight with lots of anglers still very much in the mix.

On Day 4 Fountain House stole the show with all top 3 weights coming from this section.
Winner on the day was festival leader Robertas Zilaitis with over 400 fish for 17.900kg. Nearby Tom Thackwray also clocked up over 400 fish for 17.725kg and not far behind them was Cavan angler Paul Leese with 16.325kg.

Section winners on day 4:
Richard Mowat
Marc Berg
Steve Saddler
Ken Ince
Leo Koot
Willem V D Helm
Nigel Evans
John Bijvoet
Neil Mazurek
Michel Diepstraten

Although Robert was fishing well there was still room for a few other anglers to shake up the top 3 going into the last day.

The last day of the competition saw Robert Zilaitis continue his fine run of form finishing 3rd overall on the day and with a catch that saw him win the festival outright on 69.700kg.

1st Robertas Zilaitis 69.700kg
2nd Ken Ince 65.325kg
3rd Henk Roskam 60.000kg
4thTom Thackrway 58.475kg
5th Neil Richards 55.350kg
6th Chris Haigh 54.300kg
7th John Kooij 53.940kg

Scramble for venue leads South Shore SAC back to Ballinoulart

A pet day on the shore

The members of South Shore SAC had to scramble to find a venue for last Sunday’s match as the planned venue, Kilgormon Beach was deemed unfishable on the day. So they sent scouts out to nearby venues to see the lie of the land and eventually settled on Ballinoulart, which looked promising, with a nice surf running.

A pet day on the shore

They had fished the venue relatively recently, and lots of small bass had featured in catches, so they were hopeful the bass might still be around to provide some action. Shortly after the first casts went in, their hopes were realised, as a number of small bass were reeled in, particularly from the favoured lower pegs. Flounder, dabs and whiting were also biting, and it wasn’t long before Cian Corcoran, fishing in Zone A on the end peg, had put some distance between himself and the rest of the field. He managed to keep up the pace throughout the afternoon and finished with a tally of 23 fish which was enough for him to top the table on the day.

The schoolies put in an expected but welcome appearance

Over on Zone B, it was more of a struggle, and weed became an issue late on in the match, making the going tricky. But Eric Gasparro, after a 10-year layoff from match fishing, showed that he hadn’t lost the knack, and his 13 fish saw him comfortably take the win on the zone. Rain doesn’t stop play for Limerick County Pike Anglers

All smiles for David, as he lands his first pike as an LCPAA member

They were sweating it out all week as the heavy rain forecast for the weekend looked like it might flush out plans for a day on the banks, but the committee members of the Limerick County Pike Angling Association managed to find a venue that was fishable for their latest outing last Sunday.

They were rewarded with a fine day on the bank, and the fishing wasn’t bad, with 35 fish landed for 110lb, including a first LCPAA pike for their newest member David.

All smiles for David, as he lands his first pike as an LCPAA member

Most of the fish on the day were smallish jacks, with the heaviest pike, which was caught by Mike O’Donoghue coming in at 9lb. That helped Mike to a 30lb+ bag, which was enough to see off the competition on the day, with Sam Brown finishing second on 23lb+.

It’s a club that’s all about getting out and enjoying the fresh air and camaraderie of going fishing, and they seem to manage to do that every time they get out.

Silver and bronze for Irish teams at World Championship events

The successful U25 feeder team

Irish teams were in the running for medals at home and abroad last week and, while two Irish teams were competing at the World Predator Fishing from a Boat with Lures event on Lough Erne, the Senior and U25 teams were battling the world’s best at the World Feeder Fishing event in Hungary. And battle they did, as the U25 team secured the silver medal, second only to the host nation, while back at home the Predator team took bronze at the lure fishing event.

After many years of close calls at FIPs championships, in the last number of years Irish teams have made big breakthroughs and this year has been no different.

It was an outstanding performance from the U25 team at the inaugural youth feeder championships. The four lads John Browne, Brian Clark, Dominykas Kuklys and Charlie Richards were competing against 12 top nations and they finished tied with the Hungary team on 28 points; Hungary taking gold for the bigger weight 204.050kg to Irelands 191.700kg.

Individually from the field of 53 anglers John Browne made the podium for 5th place after coming second in the match on day two and received the FIPSed diploma award. Brian Clark and Charlie Richards finished 8th and 9th respectively and Dominykus a very credible 25th position at his very first championships.

An incredible achievement for Manager Brenton Sweeney with Team Ireland Feeder currently World Champions and to Adrian Browne the manager for the championships and second Captain Nick Richards with the essential on-bank support from Martin Clark.

At the Predator Championships in Fermanagh, it was Team Lithuania who blew the competition out of the water, finishing in first place on each of the competition days, with Latvia in second overall and Ireland recovering well from a poor start to claim the bronze medal.

The competition which took place over three days is fished by boat using artificial lures only for perch and pike with fish measurements turned into points. Bronze pairs winners of 2013 Tomi Kurman and Jacek Gorny got off to a poor start but pulled it back after the first day. County Clare duo Danny Nesbitt & Aidan O’Connor, fishing only their second championship, put in a great performance throughout to reach the podium again ranking 4th pair overall.

Predator Team Ireland

Tomi Kurman has managed the Irish team for the last 10 years by boat and on the shore and has also been involved in the hosting of 4 world championships during this time, so it is fitting to see such a great figure in Irish angling leave the stage with a medal around his neck – thank you Tomi.

Irish Angling Update 🎣 04 October 2024

Orange weather warnings last weekend and Orange weather warnings this weekend. What a way to mark the transition from September to October. It comes as no surprise that it was wetter than average over the past week in the east and south, with rainfall amounts ranging between 120% and 240% of average, but oddly, once again the west and northwest were much drier with rainfall amounts there between 61% and 98% of average. What’s also odd is that despite all the rain and cloud that comes with it, it was actually sunnier than normal, though you could be forgiven for missing that as temperatures were up to 2°C cooler than normal. And then there was the wind. Not exactly a great time for anglers, with just a day here and a day there to take advantage of…

salmon release
A late season Currane salmon goes back

The salmon and sea trout season is all but closed now with just a few rivers left open to 12 October. On the subject of closed seasons, anglers in Cork are reminded that sea trout and trout fishing on the Lee also finishes on 30 September now. What rains came over the weekend didn’t make much of a difference to the poor season experienced on many rivers this year. But, anglers on the River Moy in Mayo and Lough Currane in Kerry both experienced good fishing in the final week. As bad as the season has been, a fresh perspective might make you appreciate what we still have to offer the salmon angler, if you’re not sure about that tune into this week’s Ireland on the Fly which talks to English angler George Kavanagh.

River Nore end of season

In trout angling we have a report from Lough O’Flynn where Connie Finnerty won the Maloney/Keady Cup. After that all the news is from the River Nore. Dan O’Neill returns with his River Whispers series and also gives an end of season report. Peter Driver also reports from the river where he caught some lovely trout on the last day.

Important news for pike and coarse anglers is that a new bye law closes fishing from Maganey Bridge to Graiguecullen Bridge on the River Barrow until 01 February. Only dead baiting is allowed in the closed section of the river.

Neil Richards at Inniscarra

Staying with coarse angling John Bijvoet won the Open at Inniscarra on 25.175kg ahead of the Celtic Masters Feeder Festival. The last day of the festival is today and we’ll have a full report for you next week. The VDE Baggers kicked off their winter league on the Newry Canal last weekend in weather more suited to windsurfing but the anglers did well given the conditions. The second match of the IASCaire 2024 Autumn League was fished at Lough Brackley. Again conditions were tough and the anglers worked hard for their weights. Finally good luck to the Irish teams competing in the Masters and Under 25 World Feeder Championships in Hungary.

Newbridge District Pike Anglers were out on the banks in force at the weekend. There were 72 pike caught but it was Eoin Mahoney, who only joined the club on the day of the event and was on his first trip out with his new clubmates, who made the biggest impression by landing the top fish of the day at 16.13lb. There was an even bigger competition fished on Lough Ree at the weekend. the famous King of the Lake. Ninety four teams took part to see who could catch the three longest pike, but it was Martyn Cusworth and Michael McKeown who took the win with 3 pike for 313cm. Before we leave the pike anglers good luck to everybody fishing the World Championships Predator Boat Angling with Lures on Lough Erne, but of course best of luck to the Irish team!

small eyed ray
Killybegs Mariners joint club record specimen small eyed ray 83cm for John Cunningham. John and Proinnsias Doherty win Catch of the Week for this incredible pair of specimens

There was no shortage of tough conditions to overcome for sea anglers over the last week. But more than a few did just that and there were some great catches recorded. Starting on the east coast, anglers fishing from Wicklow had plenty of species on Saturday, including tope, bullhuss, spurdog, scad, gurnard whiting and doggies. Heading south a pair of Dutch journalists experienced some entertaining pollack fishing in Cork Harbour and mind blowing bass fishing at Youghal, and all on fly too! Also fishing out of Cork Harbour was Jim Clohessy who had some great ling and whiting on what he hopes won’t turn into his last day out this year. Heading west to Kerry we have a hearty congratulations for Dave Falk and Brett Cotter who the 2024 Daiwa Irish Pairs for a second year running. The Daiwa Pairs is a sea angling festival held in Dingle every September, and is one of the largest sea angling festivals on the British and Irish calendar, so this was no mean feat. We run up the coast now to the Shannon Estuary. A group of Moldovan anglers had some enjoyable ground fishing with Sean Maguire’s charter boat Fishing Adventures. Meanwhile the Clare Dragoon was over deeper water for bigger fish – the sixgill shark. On the second day at it their luck was in and they brought a 600lb sixgill to the boat, and followed it up with a shark estimated to weigh 900lb! Continuing north we head all the way to Donegal now where the Killybegs Mariners had good fishing and a few specimens to boot; two small eyed ray and a cuckoo wrasse. We finish up with a Bluefin Tuna report from the Fiona T, you win some you lose some…

Irish Fly Fair

The 12th annual Irish Fly Fair and International Angling Show is back in Fermanagh next month. This prestigious event will be held at the fabulous four-star Killyhevlin Hotel and grounds overlooking majestic Lough Erne. Dates are set for 16th and the 17th of November and doors open at 10am both days.

Agus anois an aimsir…

As we go to press there is a small craft warning in operation for all coasts of Ireland until Saturday night. There are also Yellow and Orange rain warnings for much of the south and west. Sunday will bring a respite from the wet, windy weather but it returns on Monday and it looks like next week will continue unsettled with rain, showers and possibly strong winds at times.

It looks like there’ll be no shortage of bláth bán ar gharraí an iascaire (white flowers on the fisherman’s garden, an old Galway saying from fadó, fadó).

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Great species fishing in west Clare

Skipper Sean aguire had a regular group of Moldovan anglers out last weekend. Ground fishing was the order of the day, and they had plenty of fish, and a variety of species, to keep everyone happy.

Although it’s getting late in the year, sea temperatures are still quite warm and fish are feeding hard. October can be a very good month if the weather is suitable, so if you want to get afloat and enjoy some good sport give Sean a call.

Sixgill Shenanigans on the Clare Dragoon

Luke Aston reports on an extra-special trip for two guests targeting something BIG…

I had a couple of lads in for a few days at the Sixgill. They said when they arrived that “when they had a Sixgill each” they would Luke to try other things! I laughed and said they would be lucky to get one Sixgill between them!!

Anyway yesterday we did not have a sign of a big bite. But we headed out again today to try. Within a couple of hours we had a good fish on but about 10 minutes into the fight it broke away. What could we do but try again and in another while we had another heavy take. After about a 20 minute fight we had a 600lb Sixgill to the surface! Everyone delighted but sure we had to go again.

Just as it came time to be thinking of going home we got another fish on. This time it took about 35 minutes to get a bigger fish which I estimated at 900lbs to the surface. Every one delighted and sure tomorrow we can try something else!!

    Mission accomplished, a sixgill each!
