Nice mix of species aboard Karen Ann in Kilmore Quay

Skipper Walter Rankin reports that fishing on the Karen Ann has been pretty good with a variety of species caught. All the usual fish types, like mackerel, cod and wrasse were caught, as well as bream and one or two others. The settled weather over the weekend should bring plenty of tight lines for the crews too.

Blue sharks and stone basse for West Cork Charters – with bluefin sighted inshore

Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters was out sharking with a crew from the Dublin Fire Brigade when he spotted the first Stone Basse he has seen in 2024. He had to have a chuck at it and, sure enough, he hooked and landed it. Although they are beautiful fish to eat, a few photos later and Dave sent it back on its way.

First stone basse of 2024 for Dave Edwards

It has also been a while since he could target blue sharks and, even though the bluefin are inshore, the crew stuck with their sharking plan. None of the anglers onboard Silver Dawn today had previously caught a shark, but by the end of the day, six had their first sharks and another five fish managed to shake the hooks.

Skate plus first bluefin of 2024 for Courtmac Angling

On their first voyage in search of bluefin tuna, having been kept inshore with the high winds of late, Courtmacsherry Angling hit the jackpot with a fine fish of 87 inches brought alongside by anglers Alan and Dan (who shared the hardship of reeling it in!).

Thankfully, the skate and ray have been been very obliging on inshore marks, and Paul Currie had the whole boat to himself as he landed five skate, including a personal best!

Whether you want to fish for ton-up common skate, bluefin tuna, gilling for pollack on light tackle, reef fishing for conger, fish out south on the wrecks for something bigger or catch a Blue Shark, Courtmacherry Angling have charter or individual seats available on days during September.

Leinster Coarse Anglers ‘Leinster Open’ – 5th leg

Eleven anglers had a great days fishing at the fifth leg of the Leinster Open, with lots of skimmers, roach and a few small perch making up the weights at the chosen venue of Annaghierin Lough in Cavan.

It was an opportunity for old friends to meet and catch up and old rivalries to be reignited, with Donal McGuirk beating all of his rivals to top the pile.

Results were:

  • Donal McGuirk………………………….22.72
  • Karl Woodhouse………………………..15.64
  • Dean Murray…………………………….14.58
  • Section ‘A’ – Ambrose Devlin………..12.32
  • Section ‘B’ – Sean Ward………………13.16

The Leinster Coarse Anglers have also announced that they are trying to organise a juniors competition which will be run on an annual basis – this will include the age categories of Under 12, Under 15 and Under 18.

This is the idea of club members Dean Murray and Anthony Kelly. Fishing will be on the Grand Canal at Daingean so the club are asking for support to make the event a success.

Anybody interested in participating should give Dean a buzz on 085-1515474.

Perseverance pays off once again for Fish Tales

Chris Scally from FishTales was in touch to tell us about his recent guiding trips on Lough Ree. Earlier in the week he had the pleasure of bringing Lauren and Stephen out on the boat. Conditions were rough at times, mixed with lots of sunshine, which made fishing quite difficult. Once again, perseverance paid off and they managed a good few fish to the boat.

Athlone River-Fest 2 day Coarse match held on Big Meadow

Congratulations to Dara Finnegan (Team Nytro) and Midlands and District Coarse and Pike Anglers (MADCAPS) club member on winning the Inaugural A-1 Cleaning Ltd/Inland Fisheries Ireland/Wildhunter sponsored Athlone River Festival match on the Big Meadow in Athlone over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Dara was an integral part of the Ireland squad who won the World feeder championships, but he had to pull out all the stops to beat visiting Angler Kevin Clarke and fellow MADCAPS Bill Cassidy and Arthur Judge.

The meadows stretch was always associated with big Shannon bream, once a mecca for visiting anglers looking to land some slabs, and the bream are still around for those skilled enough to land them. Some great tench also featured in the catches over the course of the two day event.

The MADCAPS club would like to thank all the entrants, the River Fest committee, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Edenderry coarse angling club and Coarse Angling Ireland NCFFI, the afore-mentioned sponsors, the Landowners and all who helped the smooth running of the match.

IFI staff were an invaluable help, clearing swims and weighing-in

Already plans are underway for next year’s event, the club hope to expand the match from two to three days and double the number of pegs for next year – so anybody interested in fishing the 2025 edition should contact them on their Facebook page.

What’s the story, John Dory?

A rare catch this week for Cormac Walsh of the Lure Fishing Podcast. As usual, Cormac was lure fishing for bass or pollock – although in unfamiliar territory in County Cork instead of his usual Wexford haunts. The mark looked fishy, with plenty of rock and kelp, but the fish that took the Sandy Andy lure wasn’t any of the species you would expect! Much to Cormac’s surprise, a beautiful John Dory hit the white paddle tail and came to shore after a short fight. It’s a first lure caught John Dory from the shore for Cormac and probably the last!

Great fishing on Nore – Piscarifly update

Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene on the Nore and beyond:

How’s the Fishing

The River Nore

Peter had a lovely evening fishing with Lindsay Simpson recently on the River Nore showing him some of our local spots. the 2 lads fished lower Dysart and got some really good quality fish on the nymphs. The river was up a bit and coloured but the fishing was pretty good. There was a really good stamp of fish on the move. Was lovely to spend an evening with Lindsay and chat fishing stuff.

Here’s a link to Lindsay’s youtube channel, check it out for some great footage and content.

https://www.youtube.com/@lindsayiflyfish

The Nore has been fishing exeptionally well over the week with that drop of fresh water that came into it. We are coming into the last few weeks of the season so fish tend to get more active getting ready for a hard long winter. Ricky Croke was on the Nore there recently and picked up this lovely lump of a trout on the Piscari-Fly Venator Rod 10ft 6′ 2weight one of the evenings down on the Nore.

Contact [email protected] for any questions or queries. We have permits in store for the Nore.

Keith Kearney was out on the Nore also and said it fished its socks off the other day. He fished near the town bridge the 2 pools and 3 runs below the bridge and then moved up river and fished the 2 weir walls at the swimming pool area. The 2 nymphs he found worked best were a Hends #6 PT and a Hends #39 PT with rubicon tails on both.

It’s great to see the river fishing so well at the moment and hopefully it will last till the end of the season. It is time now to make the most of what is left of the river season here. give us a shout here at Piscarifly for any information, flies or tackle you need to finish out your season in style.

Fishing The River Suir with the Piscari-Fly Venator

Lukasz Ryzs was out there recently on the River Suir and wrote up a few words on his experience of fishing our Venator Rod. Thanks a million for the feedback Lukasz really appreciate it. If you are looking looking for a superb nymphing rod then make sure and check out the Piscari-fly Venator 10 foot 6, 2 weight, you wont be disappointed.

Today was finally the day I tried my new nymphing rod from piscary-fly Venator. The 2 weight 10ft 6 perfectly paired with Redington zero reel with Soldarini nymphing line. Very light setup 15ft 0.16 leader 2ft sighter and 3ft 7x to a single nymph. I tried some of my new patterns, lately I like to use bigger nymphs (up to size12 , 3mm bead) I decided to visit my favourite spot on the Suir where I have seen few bigger trout before.

Evening session started around 7:30, and within an hour I had few handy trout in the net. I was delighted to see that the set up is working very well and the rod cast pretty good, even on long distance. Playing the average Suir trout (9/10inches) on Venator was very enjoyable. Very sensitive tip helps you detect takes you`d sometimes miss on the sighter. Finally, when I hooked into the bigger fish, I knew I was in for a proper rod test. Knowing I was using light tippet I intentionally played the fish hard to test what the rod is made of. Full arm stretch in the air, and the rod bend beautifully and the fish gets no chance to get into the weeds. 2lb trout was twice up in the air trying to shake off the fly. After taking few steps downstream the fish was in the net. Quick photo and safe release- new rod baptised with style! I enjoyed fishing Venator and surely will bring it again on the next outing. Tight lines!

TAFI All-Ireland Lakes on The Corrib this coming Saturday.

Mark and Roger hit the Corrib last weekend for a day, they are getting ready for the All-Ireland Lakes and Fishing was ok, conditions were flat calm with a slight breeze now and then as evening went on. They picked up some on dries and then on wets later in the evening. Daddy patterns and sedge patterns seemed to be working best for them. Tough enough but managed to get a few keepers all the same with Rodger picking up the best of the day in the last few drifts pulling wets.

Hopefully the fishing keeps improving before next weekend. The All-Ireland TAFI interprovincials are on next Saturday on the Corrib fishing out of Oughterard. We want to wish everyone the very best of luck and hopefully the lake fishes well for everybody on the day. If conditions are flat calm I would suggest that sedges would be at the fore of the cast fishing them dry on a light set up. If the wind comes during the day then some daddies and green peter sedges would be worth a cast on the pull. It all depends on the conditions. If the weather forecast stays as it currently is forecast then it should be a good days fishing. We will let you know on next weeks newsletter how it went.

If you need any fly patterns give us a shout here at piscarifly and we can help you out.

Results from Poland

The boys did very well in Poland, finished 8th overall in the Europeans. They had some very good sessions and were looking really strong after session 3. A tougher session 4 held them back a little. But a great effort by the lads and by all accounts they all really enjoyed the experience and did us very proud . Well done to all Team Ireland on a good solid at the Fips Mouche European Flyfishing Chapionship. Final results can be found here https://www.fips-mouche.com/euro/

Masterclasses & Piscarifly Club

The final part of the eurodinking masterclass went up on the Club last week. In this session we are on the water putting the technique to the test. It is a super effective approach to catching fish and one worth having in your tool box for the rivers. One evening this week Peter will be hosting a live Question and Answer Flytying session for anyone that has any questions on the euronymphing or eurodinking masterclasses. Peter will announce the day midweek. Sign up now and don’t miss out.

Lots more masterclasses to follow on the club. Sign up at https://club.piscari-fly.com/

Dublin Trout Anglers Family Fun Day at Laois Angling Centre

Declan McKibben reports on the Dublin Trout Angler’s Association Family Fun Day fished on Sunday at Laois Angling Centre…

The weather was perfect, plenty of fish, boundless enthusiasm and joy ensured that the 15 children and young people (and their grown ups) had a great day out last Sunday. We gathered at the Laois Angling Centre at 11am, fished for a couple of hours, followed by lunch and, most importantly, the prize giving, wrapping up by 3pm.

Leah and Caragh

The competitors ranged in age from twins Sam and Jack who are just 3 years old up to 17 years. Barbless flies were the preferred method to hook a fish with many of our younger competitors using the bubble and fly with the others preferring a fly rod, and some catching fish this way for the first time!

Fran, nicola and the twins

The competitors were: Sam and Jack, Innes, sisters Caragh and Leah, Evie, siblings Fardeen, Fabiana and Farhad; sisters Kieva and Robyn and, finally, brothers Evan, Rhys, Ross and Caelan.

IFI’s Myles Kelly was on hand to offer advice, coaching and support to all our anglers, demonstrating correct fish handling, catch and release, while minimising impact on the fish. We are grateful to Myles for being there and to IFI for providing snoods and line snips which went into the goodie bags for each competitor.

Thanks also is due to Dave McBride of Southside Angling who helped us with the prizes. And to Enda and John of Laois Angling Centre who were gracious hosts and have a great facility there in Co. Laois, well stocked and managed, and which helped ensure that everyone connected with fish on the day. Thanks also to Nessa and Evie who helped on the day and put the goody bags and lunches together for the event.
