Bonito from the shore!

A very rare catch in Irish waters...Bonito from the shore

Killybegs Mariners report of a very rare catch…

Donegal Bay throwing up some amazing catches this week with a Bonito from the shore for an angler whilst lure fishing from the rocks. Usually found much further south in temperate waters this is a rarity on the rod around here well done!

Inland Fisheries Ireland launches new national €250k scheme for accessible angling

go fishing fund
  • IFI Go Fishing Fund part of Government’s Dormant Accounts Fund Action Plan 2024

Inland Fisheries Ireland(IFI) is seeking applications to a new €250k fund enabling those who are disabled or disadvantaged to enjoy fishing and related activities.

IFI’s Go Fishing Fund 2024 will provide angling supports to people with a disability or restricted mobility, or people facing social, economic, or educational barriers.

Applications for the scheme can be submitted via IFI’s dedicated portal from today until November 7th, 2024.

Barry Fox Deputy CEO of IFI commented: “IFI’s Go Fishing Fund 2024 will play a key role in empowering people to take up angling on Ireland’s many rivers and lakes – regardless of background or ability.

“This new investment will provide opportunities to experience recreational fishing and the natural environment. It allows people to pursue personal growth, education, or social inclusion by taking up angling-related leisure activities.”

Grants of between €2,000 and €5,000 will be allocated in the new initiative for fishing facilities, equipment, events, and biodiversity awareness outreach.

Eligible projects are being sought from not-for-profit organisations or registered charities delivering services to disadvantaged or disabled communities/persons.

Such organisations may collaborate with educational institutions, angling clubs, or federations to deliver fishing or related educational activities.

Applications can be made for the purchase of fishing and/or related equipment, or the delivery of education programmes concerning environmental stewardship, water safety, handling and release of fish, and vulnerable fish habitats.

The €250k expenditure is part of a suite of measures included in the State’s Dormant Accounts Fund Action Plan 2024 involving 11 Government departments – including IFI’s parent department, the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.

The Dormant Accounts Fund 2024 provides a framework for the administration of unclaimed accounts in credit institutions such as banks, building societies and An Post, and unclaimed life assurance policies in insurance undertakings.

Inland Fisheries Ireland – the State agency that protects, manages and conserves freshwater fish and habitats – continues to urge the public to report fish kills, water pollution, habitat destruction, or illegal fishing to its confidential 24/7 number, 0818 34 74 24.

IFI staff deploy an out-of-hours emergency response to fisheries issues of concern at Ireland’s rivers and lakes.

No salmon reported from Killarney lakes, a few from the Laune

salmon fishing
The river Laune - salmon fishing in a beautiful setting...

Water levels up a good bit last week to just below medium levels.

There were no reports of salmon landed on the lakes. On the river 4 grilse averaging 4.5lbs, all well coloured, were caught and released on Beats 1 and 2 of the Laune Fishery.

Another poor week reported on the Blackwater

Munster Blackwater upstream of Fermoy
Munster Blackwater upstream of Fermoy

The Blackwater rose approximately 8 inches during the week ended September 1st. This rise was from what would have been very low conditions, but this rise quickly dropped off again swiftly.

There is no point in attempting to gloss over the fact that Salmon angling catches throughout the length of the Blackwater is extremely poor and although there are some Salmon present, especially along the lower beats of the river, it has to be said that in the main these fish are coloured and simply not taking.

The River Whispers No. 6 by Dan O’Neill

The River Whispers 6

This week I fish with Georges Milan from France and a very interesting week it was. Martin Barrera Oro will be talking to us about getting kids involved in fishing. Maddison Lewis from Long Island joins me an evening’s fishing and speaks a bit about how it went. Anthony is back and speaks a bit about his winter plans. Then it’s my turn to bore you all with a little river insight and talk about the past couple of weeks.

Firstly, I am going to take a look at fishing with my now good angling friend Georges Milan from Lyon, France. Georges and I had some phone conversations on the build-up to our trip. Georges asked all the right questions and it was obvious from our conversations he was quite a competent angler. For our 6 days of fishing i had picked 6 different locations and mixed up the difficulty of the locations. Dry fly was George’s passion which was obvious once I spent some time with him. We discussed leaders and set ups, we didn’t always agree 😊 but tried each other’s set ups and caught fish on both which is all a part of angling, don’t be afraid to try new ways. The only way to get different results is try something you never have. The results may be positive or negative compared to your standing results but always keep an open mind.

Georges Milan with a nice trout

We started at 5/6pm most evenings until dark, mostly dry fly fishing with some wet fly fishing also. We tried dry dropper also and had some nice fish. I have mentioned before how angling has a habit of bringing people together and making them share an angling bond. Heading to pick up Georges each evening i now miss, we would talk about fishing, get our waders on and then fall into the zone and almost the river on a couple of occasions.

Having a record of 28 trout on the dry fly on our final day and a lovely 38cm brownie our trip came to an end. Georges is due back at the end of September for 3 days where we will try to beat our existing records on his leader set up.

Martin Barrera Oro doesn’t really need much introduction he is very quickly becoming popular. Martins company Ireland Anglers Flyfishing based in Dublin works a lot with beginners, children and advanced casters. Martin also hosts trips to various destinations but this week I wanted to hear from Martin about getting kids and beginners involved. This will be a 2- or 3-part series and is very interesting.

Martin Barrera Oro teaching a group of youngsters

“As with all sports, the sooner you commence with your children, the better. Instruction will teach them the important skills of patience, accuracy and persistence giving them a great head start in this very fun and rewarding activity. Clearly, it can be challenging on the outset, due to the fact that they have a small window for attention and patience. However, speaking from experience if you make the activity like a fun game, everything is possible.

I always start my classes with “let’s play with the rod, let’s throw a line in the air”. I keep reminding them it is a fun game and if they play hard and practice then they will catch some fish. The best and most important part.

Every child is different but I feel that anywhere between 7 and 10 is perfect. My five-year-old started at the age of 4 and has already picked up some important techniques and experience.

I like to encourage the parents to join their kids, taking some time out of their schedule to take the kids to local fisheries where they have stocked ponds where they can hook some fish. At this age hooking a fish can pique their interest in the sport.

Based on experience, a very important factor is choosing the right venue to take your budding anglers. Look for facilities that have an area where you can rest and take a break or shelter if needed. Lots of short breaks can be the key to success.

Martin Barrera Oro in action

Always remember kids are more sensitive to the elements such as rain, wind etc and in Ireland we have plenty. Make sure you and the budding angler are well prepared for the elements. If you have experience in angling try not to get frustrated with your Childs lack of experience, remember this is their time to learn and progress.

Maddison Lewis was in Ireland to celebrate getting engaged. What better way to do that than on the River Nore with his best friends casting a fly. Maddison usually fishes the snake river which is a destination I will one day get to. We spoke about fishing and of course his upcoming wedding which I assured him would be one of the best days of his life and to enjoy every minute as I did with my wedding day.

A happy Madison on the river

“I generally fish the snake river, the trout there can be large, and my preferred method is dry fly or dry dropper. I was excited to fish the Nore as i heard so much about it from a friend that fished with Dan last season. Using an 8ft 6in 3wt was for sure different for me and it took a few mins to get used to it. The delicate presentation took time and I did spook some fish on my first attempts but eventually cracked it. My first trout was about 28cm and fought so hard on the light set up. The first thing to hit me was the colours of the fish. I usually catch brookies which are beautiful, but the golden colours of the trout were fantastic and their spotted patterns were unique. The fly we were using was a simple CDC sedge pattern that i will copy for sure. The fish really hit it and the takes were so exciting. We used a small emerger also pre-rise and the takes were very delicate which made for some eye-straining fun. I’m not sure I will get away with spending my honeymoon here but it will be up for discussion at least”

Anthony is now back to school so last-minute fishing trips are off the cards for now. We have planned to take another trip this season with Ronan Murray from Irish pike guides. The Barrow will be re-visited and perhaps some lake trips for Rainbows. All very exciting and a tackle turnover in the gear bags will be happening soon.

Anthony and Ronan on a lough trip last year

“I used to hate winter times but now that I have started predator fishing i look forward to it. I really enjoyed my trip with Ronan last season on the boat for pike. I caught lots of pike and perch to. My dad said we will go again this year so am looking forward to that. I want to try dead baiting and hope to beat my pb pike this year.

We will also be fishing the barrow for roach and bream. I enjoy fishing for them and find that there is usually a pike nearby the shoals. I am going to reline all my reels at the weekend and make sure they are all ok. I will check my tackle bags to so i have all the stuff that i will need for the winter.”

Irish fly fair 2024 Killyhevlin Hotel Enniskillen

I have been lucky enough to be invited back to give a demo at the Irish fly fair. I really enjoyed my time there last year surrounded by passionate anglers. I will be there with Cadence and Apgai Ireland also so make sure to stop by and say hello. A great event to get to speak to some of the best in the business and gain some hints and tips as I will be doing.

Tip for the week

So, with many of us getting ready to switch to heavier rods and cast some hefty flies, it may be time to do a little practice. Let’s take those rods out and go for a cast over grass. I sacrificed a pike fly by cutting off the hook so I just had the shank with the pattern attached. I have been using a 3wt with size 22 dry fly the last 3wks so switching to a large fly on an 8wt can be a shock. An exercise i do with people to speed up their adjustment to a different rod or set up is i underline a rod and also overline. I put a 5wf on my 8wt rod and an 8wf on my 5wt rod. This will get the caster use to adjusting quickly and really working on adjusting technique to suit the rod / set up. If you have a few friends then really mix it up and don’t tell them what’s on what, they have not got a clue what to expect but only allow the 4 casts to adjust. Fun game during the off season and will really strengthen your casting when your blessed with a balanced set up.

So here we are at the end of August. Fishing has been good overall over the past couple of weeks with some great trout. Dry fly fishing has been good but in the past few days at about 8.50/9pm it cools a little and the rise shuts off that bit quicker. I have been lucky the past couple of weeks and got to meet some great anglers. I enjoy watching them fish without interfering, perhaps they will approach something differently or try something that I would be afraid to try. Some want to progress and learn, they say that when a child is young their mind is like a sponge and it’s very easy for them to pick up new languages or such. How about we look at our angling journey through the mind of a child, allow ourselves to gain all that extra information. Really break down what we are trying to achieve be it a cast or a method. If you are struggling then ask a fellow angler or me, anyone that reads this can contact me and I’m happy to speak and learn. As an instructor it makes me stronger and more knowledgeable by teaching as many people as I can, in fact i get more from the person I’m teaching than they get from me mostly. Explanation is key but it must be remembered there is always more than one. With a busy and exciting couple of weeks ahead i look forward to updating you all in the next edition.

Long awaited fishing trip for kayak anglers in West Cork

pollack

David Norman reports from West Cork…

Can’t tell you how good it felt to FINALLY get afloat last week. It’s hard to believe but my last guided trip was 30th July so up until this one no trips done in the whole of August due to the unsettled weather. The normally reliable forecasting has just been adding to the pain of inactivity. I normally call my trips 3 Days out on a good forecast but I’ve had to reduce that to 2 Days due to the changeability we’ve been getting, I’ve seen forecasts for 5 days of ideal weather reduce to 3 then evaporate all together… I’d call it the night before if I could at the moment but it’s not fair on the paying guests and it doesn’t leave enough time to get the all-important pre trip video call done. I’ve been watching the weather so closely I’ve discovered new features in the forecast I’ve been using for the past 30 years, so I suppose it’s not all bad.

pollack

So against that backdrop I was delighted to see the most perfect weather forecast I’d seen all month and give the green light to Darren Cousins ( Who I met whilst giving a lure and fly fishing demo at the Irish Spring Angling Fair ) for him to travel up from Wexford for Day 1 of the 2 Days he’d booked with me. By the time we went afloat of course the SE breeze was pushing up 2-3 ft of local swell so on the limit and just over it at times, definitely not the 0-1ft we were forecasted but thankfully Darren is a well equipped and experienced shore and kayak angler so he wasn’t fazed by it in the slightest which made my life a lot easier. We seemed to get off to a flyer at spot A with the first fish being a PB Pollock for Darren but it was just too uncomfortable to stick around there so we moved off in search of some shelter from the elements which we found to a point spot B … Again, we got an instant response to Pirate Lures Corsair Bait Fish lures in Pink & Black.

I’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to everybody who’s been patiently waiting to get their trips with me done and often having them rolled over multiple times. I really do appreciate it and we will get out there for the best fishing I can possibly find for you all and make some memories together when the conditions are right.

Great week for US angler Richard and Ron & Bert from Holland at Melview Fishing Lodge

Richard from the US is all smiles with this cracking trout

Melview Fishing Lodge reports…

Ron and Bert from Holland who are regular visiting anglers to Ireland and Melview Fishing Lodge had another good week’s fish. They fished three venues during their stay and prebaiting was involved in all three. All the hard work paid off for them producing some good Bream, Hybrids and Tench. Their preference was fishing the feeder at 40 yards into depths between 4m and 8m using various hook baits. Well done guys and thanks for another great week of fun and laughs and look forward to seeing you again next year!

Bert and Ronald with one of their great catches of bream and tench

Meanwhile, Richard from Washington USA was over in Ireland with his family to do some touring around and to track down some family ties in various parts of the Island. Richard is a keen angler back home so we decided to arrange a day’s Pike fishing for him with the possibility of a bit of Trout action. The start of the day started of slow but then a few Pike turned up to around 85cm, but the highlight of the day was a lovely Trout on a small lure. Kevin said, I can’t believe you got to see and do so much in your four days here but that thank you for the great company and hope to see you again some time.

Great fishing on the Clare Dragoon as wind eases

After a sustained windy period, skipper Luke Aston was keen to exploit the recent settled weather, and headed offshore at last. ”

And it was lovely to get out there. We took the opportunity to fish the bottom and have a couple of shark rods out. I was disappointed that we only had 2 Blueshark and the biggest was only 40lbs. But the mixed fishing off the bottom was good with lots of species including a nice Blue Mouth and some fine fat whiting.
Bluemouth

A new group arrived for their stay and kicked off their visit with some nice variety.

The last few days have seen some wind, when the estuary came into pay and produced some nice fish, but they also managed to get offshore for a couple of shark drifts and bottom fishing, which was very good.

Good fishing on Erriff for August

Donavin Brinklow reports from the Erriff on a good month of fishing in August. River levels were good for most of the month, with regular spates and plenty of rainfall keeping the river topped up. As Davud McEvoy reports from the nearby Delphi Fishery, it was the wettest August on record since 1985 in this area!

During the month there was a disastrous escape of thousands of farmed salmon from a nearby industrial salmon cage and a number of these fish entered the river, but were either removed at the trap or caught by anglers on Beat 9 below Aasleagh Falls.

Ian Ferris kicked off our August fishing when he landed a 7lbs salmon off the Falls Pool on a Cascade. Eamon Power landed a 6lbs salmon on Beat 9 on a Sunray. Brian Hennesey landed 5lbs and 4lbs salmon, also on Beat 9 – Falls Pool – on a Cascade.

2nd August: Peter Kavanagh landed a 4.5lbs salmon on Beat 9 on a Bann special. James O’Neill landed a 4lbs salmon on Beat 9 Falls Pool on a silver stoat and Connor O’Leary landed a 4.5 lbs salmon on a Cascade on Beat 9 Falls Pool.

3rd August: James O’Neill landed 4 salmon on Beat 9 using a silver stoat, Paddy Gargan landed 3 ½ lbs salmon on a Cascade and Niall Lynch landed 2 salmon around 4 lbs on a Sunray on Beat 9.

4th August: Conor O’Leary landed a 7lbs and a 6lbs salmon on Beat 9 on a Cascade.

5th August: John Geary landed a 5lbs salmon on Beat 5 bridge Pool using a silver shrimp pattern.

6th August: Kevin Mitchell landed a 15lbs salmon on a McCormick and a 8lbs salmon on a Munro killer on Beat 9. Paddy Gargan landed 2 salmon on a Cascade and Niall Lynch landed 2 salmon on a Cascade on Beat 9. Paul McCarthy landed 2 sea trout on Beat 3 and 2 sea trout on Beat 4.

Kevin Mitchell with his 15lbs fish (released after photo)

7th August: John Phelan landed 3 salmon on Beat 9 using a Cascade and Peader Robinson landed a 5.5 lbs salmon on Beat 9. David Taggart landed a 4lbs salmon on Beat 8 Island rock.

8th August: Jake Delany landed an 8 lbs salmon on a Cascade, Peader Robinson landed a 4.5 lbs salmon on a Sunray and Peter Coyne landed a 9.25lbs salmon using an Allys shrimp and another 3 salmon using a Collie Dog on Beat 9.

9th August: Jake Delany landed a 6lbs salmon and a 1lbs sea trout on a purple shrimp fly, Paddy Gargan landed 2 salmon on a Sunray, Kevin Mitchell landed 2 salmon on a Cascade and Niall Lynch landed 1 salmon on a Cascade on Beat 9.

10th August: Ian Ferris landed a 4lbs salmon on Beat 6 High banks and 4 sea trout and one 3lbs salmon on Beat 3 School House. Simon Cassidy landed a 5lbs salmon on Beat 6 Black Banks on a Stoat’s Tail.

11th August:  Niall Lynch landed 2 sea trout and 2 salmon on Beat 9 Middle Garden Pool on a Munro and a 6lbs salmon in the Upper Garden Pool. Alastair Purdy landed a 5lbs salmon and a 1lbs sea trout in the Falls Pool.

12th August: Isaac Byrne landed 2 sea trout on Beat 9. Eugene McCarthy had a great day with 6 salmon landed on Beat 9 on a Cascade and Michael Wade also had 3 salmon on Beat 9 using a Collie Dog. Luke Tunney landed his first salmon on Beat 3 School House on a Sunray weighing 6lbs.

Eugene McCarthy with one of his fish

13th August: Ciaran Breedy landed a 4lbs salmon on Beat 9 Upper Garden Pool on a black shrimp.

14th August: Billy Moylan landed a 7.5lbs salmon in the Gauge Pool on a black shrimp, Lairgnen McDermott landed a 5lbs salmon also on a black shrimp and Peter Coyne landed a 5lbs salmon on Beat 9 Sea Pool.

15th August: Colin Lynam had 1 sea trout and 1 salmon and Declan Convery had 1 salmon on Beat 9 using a Delphi Collie. Stephen Ceilleir had 2 sea trout on Beat 3 Potholes on a Willie Gunn and Jeremy Jonis landed a 6lbs salmon on Beat 3 Mikes Pool on a Cascade.

16th August: John Geary landed 3 sea trout and 2 salmon on Beat 5. Declan Convery landed 3 salmon on Beat 9 using a Collie Dog. John Curran landed 3 salmon and Pat Oldham landed 1 salmon on Beat 9, Martin Witort landed a 4lbs salmon on Colonels Run (Beat 6) on a Cascade.

17th August: Colin Lynam landed a 4.5lbs salmon in the Falls Pool on Beat 9. Unfortunately, after the escape of farmed salmon we started catching them on the Erriff with the first one recorded

30th/31st: A few farmed escapes recorded.

The catch for the month was 132 salmon (not including farm escapes), and 23 sea trout.

September can be a very good month on the Erriff is onditions are right, so keep an eye on the forecast and if any rain is coming it may well be worth a cast. Remember the micro-climate here is much wetter with the mountains and the Erriff can get heavy rain when the rest of the country is only seeing a few showers!

The Erriff System is comprised of the Erriff River and the two small loughs of Tawnyard and Derrintin. The River Erriff is one of the premier salmon fishing rivers in Ireland. A spate river, it is characterised by lively streams and deep fish-holding pools. It has 8 miles of prime angling water, divided into 9 beats. Beats are un-crowded with only two rods on most and a maximum of 3 sometimes. Angling is rotated on a daily basis.

Wet wet wet – Rain brings great salmon fishing at Delphi

Doo Lough, Delphi Fishery, Co. Mayo

David McEvoy reports on good salmon fishing from Delphi.

August turned out to be an excellent month for salmon with 79 landed not including escapees. Sea trout fishing was quieter but has really picked up in the last week. It was extremely wet here with 392mms which was the wettest August in our records back to 1986, but I had a suspicion about 1985 as I remembered that August. Records from Met Eireann indicate that 1985 was the wettest with 433.8mms dating back probably to when Paddy Heneghan started recording rainfall in 1941!

No shortage of water!

A highlight of early August was 10 year old Lea Fehlmann’s first ever salmon, a fish of approx. 3lbs, taken on a Red Shrimp, which she insisted be returned. Her family had taken the Lodge for the week so needless to say, there was great excitement. Week 32 turned out to be quite exceptional for the time of year with 37 fish landed. This was mainly due to the biggest flood of the year on the Sunday/Monday. From 10am on Sunday the 4th to 10am on Monday the 5th our rain gauge on the lawn recorded 70.6mms(2.78”), while the automatic station at Doolough recorded 80.01mms(3.15”). There were 2 fish landed on Finlough on Sunday morning before the rise and then the river hit 100 later that evening and was quite dirty but by Monday morning it was 95, but running clear, thanks to the filtering effect of the lakes. Colin Lynam had a great morning, landing 4 and losing a couple. Steve Jones landed 2 and lost too many to mention and Rocky Moran had 1, all off the Turn pool, while there were another 3 off Finlough. There were another 25 landed for the remainder of the week, with the Beattie party having 7, Luke Drea 3, Oliver Ross 3, Hamish McAuley and William Maire had 2, while Dorrie Gibbons, Fergal Costello, George Westropp, Peter Moran, Liam Glynn and Michael VanMourik all had 1 each. Special mention must go to Sophia Gaisford and Benoit Hebert, who both landed their first ever salmon on Finlough on the 8th of 4lbs10ozs and 4lbs8ozs respectively.

A fresh grilse for Rich Taylor (catch photo release)

Sa trout fishing has also picked up significantly. 6 visiting trout anglers from Corrib and Mask fished Doolough and Glencullin for a day and boated 37 sea trout between them, most between 0.5-1lbs, but a few fish up to 1.5lbs.

The Stone family

Plenty fishing available in the next while.
