Angling Report 16th July (Email to Laune Angling Report) (ALSO SEE E-MAIL ATTACHED)

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 16th July water now at 2.5 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear.  The Laune is in great condition for all methods of angling.

The week gone by will be remembered by a good few anglers on the Laune as the week when the season kicked off properly.  There were no 16 pounders of the week before but a few fish well into double figures were caught of met.  Our Chairman Stewart Stephens had the best fish landed for the week at 14 lb. (Fly)  Patrick Richard had a 12 pounder

12 lb. salmon for Patrick Richard on the River Laune at "O'Connells"

Tony Murphy had a 10 pounder.  Matt Murphy had his best week of the season so far with a good few fish from Johnston’s and Beat 3.  Sean O’Sullivan had two fish for the week the best a sea-liced fish of 8 lb. caught at Crowley’s.

Sean O'Sullivan with a nice fresh 8 lb. salmon at Crowley's on the River Laune.

With the water as nice as it is at the moment and with fresh big fish and grilse running the river prospects are good for the coming week and weekend.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters costs only €25 per day up to the end of July.

Beat 3:

Beat 3 fished really well again last week with a good few fish reported from there caught spinning and on the fly.  This writer had a nice fish of about 6 lbs which was damaged on each side probably by a seal attack.  Dr James O’Sullivan had his first on the fly this year well down the Beat on Sunday (long-tailed shrimp fly, single hook)

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25 probably the best value in salmon fishing in the country with a good chance of a fish.

Italian couple savour the quality fishing in Mullingar

Italian couple Sara Bastianelli and Andrea Easagrande were holidaying across the country last week, and dropped into James McKeow of the Austin Friars Hotel before heading to Dublin. Andrea is a fishing fanatic, and we spent a few hours spinning for pike last week. We had very little time, but still managed to boat 4 pike, and also lost a few fish. Andrea was very impressed with the quality of the fishing, and the facilities here in Mullingar for visiting Anglers. I will be keeping in touch with Andrea and Sara, and they will be checking our weekly Angling reports from the Midlands. Next year Andrea plans to fish the lakes and rivers across Westmeath with some of his friends from Umbria, Parugia.Sara also enjoyed the few hours out on the lake, and I reckon the photograph of Andrea and Sara tells its own story.

PETER COMPETITION. All going well I will get a night or two out on the lakes this week. Unfortunately my weekends are caught up with the Out & About scene here in Mullingar. This coming Friday night Lough Lene Angling Association will host their first evening competition. On the night the Larry Mulligan Cup is up for grabs, and fishing is from 7pm-11.15pm, so make sure your batteries are charges in the torch. It’s a truly magical time to be out on the lake, and as darkness falls some big fish drop their guard, and feed on hatching Green Peters and Murroughs.

From Abu Dhabi to Mullingar for the Trout

Yassen Mechal and Andrew Lord
Yassen Mechal and Andrew Lord

NIGHT ON OWEL. I spent my first night on Owel checking out the Peter situation on Monday of this week. Only a handful of boats were out on the lake, and little or no fly hatched on the night. Still I managed to move a few fish early in the evening fishing 2 dry flyies, and as darkness fell a few nice fish moved. Its early days yet, and soon the Peter season will be in full swing. As I loaded the boat at Tullaghan  I noticed a few very big Crayfish, and managed to photograph some Biggies.

ANDREW AND YASSEN. Andrew Lord is over on Holidays from Abu Dhabi visiting Grandparents Ann and George Lord here in Mullingar.Andrew is joined by fellow school pal Yassen Mechal also from Abu Dhabi, and the deadly Duo are enjoying their break in the Emerald Isle. The lads certainly enjoy their fishing, and have fished the Royal Can and Owel in recent days, producing nice perch, pike, and Trout. All going well we will here more from the lads angling adventures before the summer Holidays come to an end.

Paul Kelly wins the two day festival on the Grand Canal at Edenderry.

Paul Kelly, the winner of the two day festival fishing on the Grand Canal at Edenderry.

Tommy Burke reports on the two day festival held on the Grand Canal at Edenderry last weekend.
18 anglers turned out for the Edenderry two day festival on Saturday and Sunday on the grand canal Edenderry. Saturdays match was held on the Toberdaly venue and with the weather it was more like a winter league venue than a mid July one.  The conditions meant the fishing was always going to be hard, and Tommy Burke from peg 11, fishing tight across at 14.5 m put 5 lb on the scales to take the section on day 1 with a couple of  small hybrids and roach, second was Alan Larkin with 3 lb.-12 oz from peg 1, and joint thirds were Danny Murphy and Brendan Collins with 3 lb. – 04 oz .  A lot of anglers had pike trouble throughout the match and small roach made up most bags. So with no one running away with the match it was all to play for on day two, the venue for day two was Julian’s match stretch off Morrissey’s. The weather was a bit kinder with occasional downpours, and the fishing was just as hard as day one with the canal out of sorts and plenty of boat traffic thrown in too. Paul Kelly on the end peg 18 topped the section with 6 lb.- 14 oz. of roach and hybrids, Julian Kendrick peg 16 filled the runner up slot with 4-04 of roach, and joint thirds were Colin Oliver peg 11 and Harold Pattison peg 1 with 4 lb. – 03 oz. Having done 3 lb. the first day Paul Kelly Edenderry CAC took the honors over the two days with 9 lb.-14 oz., Tommy Burke Edenderry CAC was the runner up with 8-13, and third overall was Pat Bartley Team BSI with 6 lb. -07 oz.

Mike O'Dywer with a fine salmon of 15 lb. on the River Inny.

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

10/7/12 There were a few sea trout caught and catch of the day goes to a French angler fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com who caught 3 sea trout up to 2 lb. and all returned, there were a few boats out manipulating their flies and failed miserably in procuring my Noble game fish or they failed in reporting their catches. Wind NW fresh and overcast and cold.

11/7/12 The wind may have been in the north but at least my noble Anglers saw some reasonable action, in the salmon department Mr. Andy Wishart of Co. Down got a cracker of a salmon of 8 lb. on the troll, and in the drifting department, renowned ghillie Mr. Bob Priestley caught a 5 lb. Grilse, now to the sea trout fly department Mr. C Barkley, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 2 sea trout on the drift, Mr. Mark Knowles of the UK, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 2 juniors, and in the past few days Mark has also caught a 6 lb. specimen sea trout a 5 lb. sea trout and a few in the 2 to 3 lb. class and were all returned. Staying with the sea trout, Mr. Tom Hellson of the UK and his brother-in-law, fishing with their ghillie Mr. Vincent Appleby and of www.salmonandseatrout.com caught 3 sea trout and a fine brown trout on the troll, and lost a fine salmon. Also in good form was Mr. Patsy Quilligan of Cork, caught a fine basket of sea trout on the troll. Wind N then veered NE light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

12/7/12 Mr. Mark Knowles of the UK fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and of www.fishinhwithdom.com was in good with his fly rod, he caught a fine grilse of 5 lb. and caught a two sea trout ranging from 1 lb. up to 3 lb., Mr. Tim O’Mahony of Cork and his young son Antony caught 2 juniors and Tim was also telling me while sea fishing he caught 6 fine Bass yesterday, now we head upstream too the Upper Lakes and Lough Namona, Mr. C Berkley fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a 2.5 lb. sea trout, now we cut across the valley too the River Inny and catch of the day, local ghillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer caught a 15 lb. salmon on the spin and I can tell you his clients Mr. PJ Lynham and his son Mr Colin Lynham of Dublin, were delighted as they watched their ghillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer, tackle my noble salmon and it wasn’t long before my noble salmon was on the bank for all to see. Wind S then Veered SW fresh and over cast with light misty rain and just for the record it made another flood early this morning.

Mike O'Dwyer with a fine salmon of 15 lb. on the River Inny.

13/7/12 straight too the sea trout department, Mr. C Berkley, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and of tomfishing@eircom.net caught one Junior, Mr Mark Knowles of the UK fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and of www.fishingwithdom.com also caught on sea trout, and renowned Cork angler Patsy Quilligan caught a fine 4 lb. sea trout which he sportingly put back and not satisfied with his days fishing on Lough Currane, he headed down stream too the famous Butler Pool and of www.watervillegolflinks.ie and caught himself a 9 lb. salmon, now we head back up stream too the Lake, there were a few Trout caught on the troll.

Wind N and overcast.

15/7/12 There were just a few juniors caught, but I must emphasize There were a few boats out manipulating their flies, and if they didn’t fail in catching my noble game fish they certainly did by not reporting their catches, so on that note we will head down stream too the famous Butler Pool and of www.watervillegolflinks.ie Mr. Noel Clancy of Dublin fishing with his ghillie Mr. Sion Brain and of www.kbfishingireland.com caught a lightening fresh 8 lb. salmon. Wind SW light with rain this morning and overcast this afternoon.

Noel Clancy with a lovely salmon from the Butler Pool at Waterville.

16/7/12 Made another big flood early this morning and the mouth of the Commeragh was very dirty so as you can imagine the best fly fishing stations were at a stand still for most of the day, but this didn’t stop my noble anglers from procuring my noble game fish, first in the salmon department, Mr. Diarmuld Devereux of Wexford, caught a fine fresh grilse on the troll, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and of tomfishing@eircom.net

Diarmuld Devereux and ghillie Tom O'Shea with a grilse
