Mark and Danny O’Neill, Co. Wicklow, with a sample of their catch from the Moy Estuary.
Water conditions on the Estuary were far from ideal over the past week, with the continuation of flood water causing difficulties for anglers. However, some did enjoy good sport, with angling guide Judd Ruane reporting some success for his clients. Mark and Danny O’Neill, Co. Wicklow, boated 12 sea trout while fishing the estuary, the majority taken on mackerel strip.

John Flynn IFI reports on the River Barrow and Canal:
Some good coarse fishing to be had in the Athy and Levitstown area. Monasterevin is also fishing quite well. Anglers are reporting nice bags of Hybrids being caught on the canal near Rathdangan in Co Kildare.
Down at Carlow and St Mullins Dace and Roach are pleasing those who venture out to fish.
Pat Collins was out fishing near Dunmore-East in Co Waterford for Ballan Wrasse on Saturday. Pat tells us “1 hour after high water I was using rag worm as bait. I didn’t get a bite for about 20 mins but after I caught 2 or 3 small wrasse all hell broke loose and after about 5 mins I landed this.
Pat Collins with Dunmore-East Wrasse
About 20 minutes and a few more small fish I hooked another one nearly as big as one in pics but lost it after a couple of minutes. I estimate the fish to be 52 cm in length and a girth of 48 cm . Probably between 5 – 7 lbs”
Colin Folan, Lough Inagh Lodge Hotel sends us this report:
36 hours of rain has drove the water up to flood level. All the beats are fishable and I believe that there is a good run happening. I just had lunch with 2 anglers who were out on Inagh this morning and they told me they have landed 4 Salmon to 12lbs and 8 Sea Trout. Good fishing should be around for a few days yet.
On a sadder note, my good friend Niall Fingleton from Dublin, who worked on the Inagh Fishery for 1996/97 seasons, passed away on Saturday morning. Niall lost his long battle with illness, but never stopped fishing. He was 41.
With the recent bad weather and high water levels few anglers have been venturing out. The last week however has seen Pike anglers fishing The Shannon and Portumna bay Lough Derg having great sport with several anglers reporting 10-15 pike per outing. Roach and Bream fishing also improving with one of our clients Rachel Kinney of Philadelphia netting her first ever Bream a fish of 6lbs.
High water and unfavourable weather conditions are hampering angling activity in many areas but despite this Eamonn Conway is still finding some good trout fishing on the upper reaches of the Fane and its tributaries. Despite the high water Eamonn has reported a number of good catches on recent outings with many of the trout falling to weighted nymphs. Where many anglers would give up Eamonn always is willing to go that extra yard to find some nice trout who are willing to sample his excellent nymphs. Eamonn has reported lots of trout taken with many of them small but an occasional nice one has obliged to help keep him interested.
If you fancy a days guided trout, pike or salmon fly-fishing, Eamonn can be contacted at eamonnconwayflyfishing@hotmail.com
Eamonn is also an APGAI-Ire casting instructor, so if you want to learn to fly fish or improve your casting technique why not drop him an email at the above address.

Bernard Devenney of the Dundalk Salmon Anglers reports that water levels remain high on the River Fane and the other local rivers, Dee, Glyde and Castletown. As a result not many Salmon have been caught on the Fane as very few anglers are fishing. However, Anthony Carty from Dundalk had a very big Salmon almost on the bank but the fish made one final drive for freedom and made it back into the river. Bernard also reports that there seems to be a good stock of Sea-trout all along the river right up to Inniskeen but with the fast water it is hard to catch them.
On the Castletown river only two Seatrout were weighed in at the annual Sea-trout competition. Matt Cambell had seven Seatrout on Monday evening the heaviest almost two pounds. He released five back into the river. Young Kyle McCormack of Dundalk caught his first ever Salmon, a lovely fish of 7-8 lbs. which was released back into the river as the rule on the Castletown for Salmon is “catch & release”.
It is reported that there has been an exceptionally good run of the Salmon on the river Dee mainly due to the high water, this river is also “catch & release” at present. Circa 300 salmon passed through the counter during June.
If water levels drop in the next week or two we should see a great improvement in both Salmon & Sea-trout fishing. Here is hoping!!

Portumna :
Very few anglers about with the high water but any that have made the effort are having a hard time keeping up with their ground bait such is the power of the current. One Swiss angler got good fishing while jigging for perch off Stony Island reporting 15 fish . Seamus Molloy and his friend Jason Molloy from Terryglass, were fishing for trout out of Dromineer and caught a fine trout weighing 10.5lbs which was returned alive.
