All things quiet on the River Suck and Lough Ree front with very high water levels

River Suck and Lough Ree report by John Devaney

As water levels are still very high and weather is cold,  not much angling on Lough Ree or River Suck.  No competitions were held over the weekend and none are planned until August weekend.  Lough Acalla was also quiet except for regulars nothing spectacular to report.

Nathan makes Grandad proud with his fine 9lb salmon on the River Feale

River Feale, Kerry report by Paddy Halpin:

Lots of water about for the week but fish are still scarce and  only reports of 5 fish being caught for the week on the Feale, one of the lucky anglers was young angler Nathan Hurley from Newcastlewest Co. Limerick ( see pic.) while out fishing with his Grandad Joe.  Nathan hooked and landed a fine fresh Salmon while fishing the Killocrim/Finuge Fishery at the Dam on the Tuesday 3rd of July. The fish rattled the scales at 9lbs so well done to Nathan. Water levels on the Feale at the moment are dropping and things are looking up for the rest of the coming week when water will better suit the fly angler.

Unusual Weather Conditions favour salmon fishing on the River Fane

Brendan Rice from Dundalk with a Fine Fresh Fane Salmon

Bernard Devenney from the Dundalk Salmon Anglers reports that a number of Salmon have been caught on the Fane during the last week. Normally, water levels at this time of the year would be low and because of this not many Salmon would be in the river. However, because of the large amount of rain during the last number of weeks water levels have been very high and Salmon are now being caught. Recently, Brian McShane of Dundalk had a small grilse of 5lbs, Brendan Rice of Dundalk had a fine fish of 10lbs., Paddy Cudden from Ardee had a lovely fish of 10lbs and Liam Woods of Knockbrodge had a fine fish of 15lbs which was returned to the river. The river is now in excellent condition for fishing.

Bernard also reports that some fine sea-trout have also been caught in the last week. Jim Curley from Duleek had a lovely 2lb Seatrout and Damien Mulligan of Dromiskin had two sea-trout of 1lb each.

With more wet weather forecast for the next week it is certain that the fishing will be improving from now on. Around a dozen fish passed through the counter throughout the month of June.

Day Permits to fish on Dundalk Salmon Anglers fisheries on the Fane are available from the three fishing tackle shops in Dundalk or from Bernard Devenney at 087 1322 873. Price €15 each

Specimen Tope for Kieran off Wicklow

On Sat 7th July ESB International hit the High Sea’s off Wicklow. Local ESB Employee and Carrickmacross Club Angler Kieran Roche took to the Seas off Wicklow with ESB International Angling Club. The Club members travelled to Wicklow harbour and were met by local Skipper Kit Dunne and his trusty boat Lisin 1 of Wicklow Boat Charters. After a short journey South along the Wicklow coastline Kit set anchor and the fishing began. Within 2 min of Kieran setting his bait on the bottom he was into a fish, yes he had a run and struck. Little did he think 2 hrs later he would still be battling with what was to be a specimen Tope. The epic battle lasted for a full 2hrs 15min. Kieran eventually won the battle.

Emy and District Anglers Ltd host their annual  Eugene Mulligan Memorial Fly-fishing competition, on Emy Lake, Emyvale, Co. Monaghan  this Sunday  July 15th 2012. This cup and competition is in memory of a leading member of the club and an expert fisherman. Eugene was a young man who introduced many others to take up the sport and he was always very encouraging and helpful to beginners. His death after illness in 1996 was a big blow to the club and his memory lives on with the members. The cup, donated by the family, was first competed for in 1997. Fishing will be from the shore only. Please note all anglers should check in at club jetty car park from 12.30 pm. Fishing starts at 2pm. Plenty of prizes will be up for grabs. Everyone is welcome.

Last years winner, Sean McKenna pictured below, will be hoping to retain the cup. He is the bookies early favourite but there are a few locals ready to claim top prize!

Lough Owel and Lough Ennell slow with difficult conditions

Midland Lakes and River Inny by Dermot Broughan

We are now into the 5th week in a row of very difficulty angling conditions.  Very heavy rain during the week has seen more fresh water enter our lakes, water on all our lakes are at flood winter levels.

Lough Ennell:

Returns have been very slow on the lake due in part to the heavy rain and raising water levels.  On patrol on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, no anglers were seen on the water.  Lillput Boat Hire have reported anglers using their boats catching good perch to 1¼lbs.  They also report that Matt Fahey had 3 trout during the week from 1½lbs to 3lbs which were all returned.

Lough Owel:

Fishing has been slow on Owel during the week.  The number of anglers on the lake has been small and those fishing have found fish slow to give themselves up.  Joe Vickers had good fish to 2lbs on a Tasmanian Devil.  John Plunkett Mullingar found the going hard during the week out most nights and only returning 2 fish for the week.

Ballinafid Lake:

Over the past week no anglers have been fishing the lake.

Royal Canal:

We have had no reports from the royal canal this week.

River Inny

Once again it has been a tough week on the Inny with water levels very high.  Joe Keena has reported nice trout taken upstream of Ballymahon, put as he moved up river he had to pull out as he felt with high water he could be washed away.
