Portumna :

Very few anglers about with the high water, but two English anglers fishing Rogers Island did have two good days with bags of 25lbs reported for their efforts. Two local anglers fishing for pike out of Terryglass had a fine trout weighing 10.5lbs which was returned.

Little Brosna and Camcor River :

Anglers were reporting plenty of  fish in the lower and mid reaches of the Little Brosna but the floods have adversely impacted on the fishing here with a lot of coloured water. Some fish have been reported with David Cooke, Birr landing a 2.5lbs trout on worm and Gavin Carroll, also Birr reporting a 3 fish to 2lbs.

Pallas Lake:

Not as many people fishing Pallas at the moment due to weather conditions but anglers are getting some nice fish. John Colgon, Tullamore had 2 fish to 2lbs on Hawthorn fly, while Noel Egan also Tullamore had 2 fish for 3.5lbs on a Golden Olive. Local man Christy Geoghegan had 5 fish up to 2lbs, all returned. One Birr angler reported 3lbs Rainbow on a dryfly.

Good trout fishing on Lough Mask

Ronan Cusack reports that water levels on Lough Mask are at a record high for this time of year. The constant rainfall has forced the lake up to what is now almost autumn level. The lake has been pretty quiet for the past few weeks with only local anglers venturing out. Kieran Biggins (Ballinrobe) fished on Saturday afternoon last and he landed 17 trout with only one exceeding the 13 inch limit.  Frank and Dermot O’Hara (Ballinrobe) had 7 good fish for a day last week (best fish 1.75lbs).

Tom Mulvey and Richie Cameron from Ballinrobe had three nice fish on Sunday last (best fish 2lbs). Tom also commented with delight on the large number of undersize trout they returned throughout the day. Kevin Sheridan had 35 fish on dries for the week, with 11 exceeding the 13 inch limit. Kevin’s best fish was 3.5lbs taken on a dry Sedge. Sean Maloney from Ballinrobe fished for a day last week with Joe Fitzharris, and they had 7 fish between them (best fish 2.25lbs) and also returned large numbers of undersize trout. Ollie Wickam (Partry) fished for a day this week with Noel Fay from Kildare and they had 4 trout for the day (best fish 2lbs). Brendan Costello (Ballinrobe) had 3 nice fish for a half day last week (best fish 2lbs).

The majority of fish at the moment are still being caught in shallow water on wet and dry fly patterns.

Great sea trout fishing at Lough Inagh

Fishery manager Colin Folan reports that high water for the week ensured a very good run of fish, and especially a good run of sea trout.

73 sea trout were landed for the week, the best fish weighed 3.5lbs and was caught on Lough Inagh by regular Clare visitor Pat Power.  The fish took a Teal, Blue and Silver.  Heinrich Harendza and son, Patrick had 14 sea trout from the river beats for their week, and all fish were caught on salmon flies.  Patrick Molloy(Galway) had 6 sea trout to 2lbs for a day on Inagh.  Top fly for Patrick was a Silver Daddy.

Fr. Ronan Power (OMM) had 4 sea trout on Inagh.  There was also good brown trout fishing on both lake and river.  William Hamilton had a 2.5lbs brown and 6 sea trout for two evenings on The Trout Pool.  There were first fish on fly for USA visitor Lucas Bowerman, age 10 and N. Ireland youngster Ross Miley.

The salmon fishing should improve with the falling water this week.  Three grilse were taken for the week, but the real story is the number of fish that were lost by anglers.  I am aware of 14 lost fish.  Andy Walsh (Galway), Michael Heery (Dublin) and Ulrich Treusch (Galway) all had 6lbs grilse this week.

Good salmon fishing at Kylemore

Fishery manager Nigel Rush reports that last week was another great week on Kylemore, with 12 salmon recorded for just 18 rod-days. Water levels were good for the week though at the time of writing, a top up is needed.

Sixteen year old Gabriel Coulter secured his first ever salmon at 5lbs, Lee Bunting visiting from Belfast secured two for his first day fishing Kylemore. Andrew Lynas scored another first Kylemore fish at 2.5lbs. Seamus O’Neil landed 3 fish.

The grilse are starting to show in good numbers and hopefully we will have some sea trout anglers out on the lakes this coming week to prove the good quality of the fish.

Good fishing reported from the River Erriff

Fishery manager Jim Stafford reports on fishing last week. Weather conditions and clear water levels at 1.3 meters were very favourable on Sunday Ist July – the levels then fell slowly to 0.75m by the end of the week. High water conditions combined with spring tides of  4.7m brought a run of  salmon and sea trout into the river.

Michel Winthrop, France caught a grilse of 5lbs on a Lady Fallacia in the School House Pool on Beat 3.  The following day Michel Le Paire caught a sea-liced fish of 7.75 lbs in the Sea Pool on a Shrimp Fly.  John Lyons, Clonbur caught a grilse of 5lbs in the Sea Pool on a Cascade.  A Willie Gunn was very successful for Urgan Mantle, Clonbur who caught and released 3 sea-liced fish – two of 5lbs and the other estimated at 6lbs – the fish were caught in the Garden Pool, Gauge Pool and the Sea Pool on Beat 9.

Dr. John Casey, Clifden released a sea trout of 2.5lbs taken on a Silver Doctor in the Quarry Pool on Beat 2 and also a grilse of 5lbs caught in the Garden Pool. The Cattle Pass on Beat 1 produced a 6lbs fish for Philip Clesham – a few days later Philip caught another 7lbs fish on a G.P. in the Dog Pool on Beat 2. Mick Brown, Dublin released a fish of 7lbs taken on a Yellow Shrimp Fly on Beat 7. Dermot Seymour released a fish of 4.5lbs taken on a Cascade in the Cottage Pool on Beat 4 and lost another 2.

Michael Wade, Manager of Delphi Lodge. caught 3 fish on Beat 5 on a Collie Dog – best fish 8lbs.  Alan Hartnett, Dundalk, fishing for sea trout on Beat 2 caught and released 6 sea trout for 5lbs and landed a salmon of 7lbs in the dark at 11.30pm – all fish came to a Bibio.

Fish of the week, a sparkling fresh-run fish of 10.5lbs, was caught by Frank Hughes, Dublin on a Cascade in the Quarry Pool on Beat 2

Derrintin & Tawnyard Loughs produced some 20 brown trout up to 1lb for Donavin Brinklow in 2 afternoon fishing trips.  The best fish was estimated at 1lb – all were caught on a Bibio & Daddy Long Legs and all were sportingly released.

Total catch for the week was 16 Salmon, 17 Sea Trout and 22 Brown Trout.

Although water levels have dropped off a good run of sea trout all in excellent condition continue to enter the river and salmon can be seen coming in on every tide.

Galway Fishery starts to produce salmon as water levels drop

Water levels were very high all week in Galway, with 6 sluice gates open on the weir, only dropping on Tuesday afternoon when 4 gates were closed. Conditions are now much improved for angling. There are great numbers of salmon running the river at the moment, with many heading on upstream, and there are reports of great fishing from tributaries upstream of Lough Corrib.

Despite the high water, there were 40 salmon landed this week, with many taken on fly in the heavy water. Gerry Hartigan from Limerick landed 3 fish on shrimp, while Eoin Warner from Dublin had 2 fish, one on fly and one on shrimp. French visitor Marc de Veletian had a nice grilse on fly, as did Philip Clifford from Limerick and Galway man Tony Kavanagh. Shay Dolan from Dublin had a 5lbs fish on shrimp. Father and son duo Tom and Robert Falconer, from Dublin had 3 fish between them, all taken on shrimp, best fish 6lbs, while Manfred Wilke from Germany landed 3 fish to 8.5lbs on shrimp. Fellow German Wolfram Hoppe took a nice grilse on fly, as did Oughterard angler Lal Faherty, and Spanish visitor Miguel Gomez was top rod this week, landing 6 fish for his visit, including 3 on fly, several of which were released. The best fish of the week was taken by Dublin man Andy Smyth, a fine salmon of 12.5lbs, but our catch of the week goes to young Ivor Trimble from Northern Ireland, who caught his first ever salmon on his first trip to Galway.

With water levels more conducive to fly angling, and so many fish coming in on every tide, fishing prospects for the next week are excellent.
