Some trout from the Fergus River in rising flood

The Fergus is in flood at the moment.   Some nice trout were caught during the rising flood in Ennis.  All trout anglers on the Fergus are requested to pay heed to their hook sizes in order to reduce the risk of accidentally catching and killing salmon at this time when there is a run on.

1,300 lb. of coarse fish for a group of english anglers fishing on Lough Derg.

East Clare Rivers and Lakes

  • Lough Derg at Rossmore.  Five small trout were caught by one individual during an evening’s angling off White Island. A group of English tourist anglers that stayed in Woodford last week have totted up their total coarse fish catch for the week as 1,300 lbs.  They reported that they had a great weeks fishing – Their angling was from the shorelines around Coos Bay.

Mackerel are plentiful along with some tope, pollack and flats along the Clare coast.

Clare Area – Ken O’Neill IFI Clare area.

Summary.

Persistent Flooding in rivers limiting trout angling.  However, sea angling is providing some nice returns.

Clare Areas

Sea Area – Fanore – Doonbeg

There are a few  nice pollack being caught at the moment in at Fanore – A lady angler (who does not want her name mentioned) caught a 5 lb. Pollack from a boat off Doonbeg.  Mackerel catches are still plentiful off the Clare Coastline – in addition, the Mack’s are generally larger than normal.  However, all anglers are advised to be very careful if angling from elevated positions off the rocks for mackerel.  tope are also being caught, as are dogfish and flat fish.  A conger eel was caught last Wednesday weighing 4.5 kg.

Generally shore angling is slow enough at the moment also.  The large tides and presence of Porpoises near the shoreline are being blamed as they are scaring off the fish.  However, they will be moving off again shortly.

Lisdoonvarna / Fanore International Angling Week is happening at the end of the month (August Bank Holiday Weekend).  There will be a weeks long fishing events that is being organised by the Fanore SAC – Contact James Linnane for more details on same (087 2215159)

Good trout and pike reported from Lough Ennell as fishing is generally quiet in the Midlands.

Moi Mateur with a 26.88 lb. pike from Lough Ennell

Midland Lakes & River Inny by Dermot Broughan, IFI Mullingar.

Introduction:

For the fourth week in a row it has been very difficult for angling.  Very heavy rain during the week has seen a lot of fresh water enter our lakes, and we are now seeing Owel even recover its normal water level.

Lough Ennell:

Moi Mateur with a 26.88 lb. pike from Lough Ennell

On Tuesday evening, a Polish angler Moi Mateur landed a pike that weighed in at 12 kgs, (26.88 lb).  This fish was returned to the water and Moi informed us that he has boated over 50 pike in the last 12 months.  Thomas Mac Evoy Portarlington, Co Laois had a nice 3½ lb trout on Tuesday evening fishing a Brown sedge.  Des McGee reported 5 fish caught over two outings on a red arsed green peter fly the best being 4 lbs.

Tom MacEvoy with 3.5 lb. trout from Lough Ennell

Lough Glore:

The Lough Glore anglers held a pike competition on the lake on Sunday.  Seven anglers fished the competition with two fish weighed in.  The best fish was 2 lb. weighed in by Mick Flanagan.

Lough Owel:

It has been a slow week on Owel.  The fish have gone on the perch fry and are slow to feed on the surface.  The best results for the week were Kenny Kiernan with 8 fish on Thursday evening, best of which was 1¾, John Plunkett with 4 fish, best 1¾, and Emmet Stagg TD who had 4 fish on Sunday the best was 3 lb.

Lough Derravaragh:

There are no reports of fish being caught on Derravaragh this week. There were two boats out on Sunday and they never got a bite all day.

Control of Invasive Species on Lough Corrib

Currently a large scale Jute matting operation is ongoing in Annaghdown Bay, Lough Corrib. These efforts will help stem the spread of this highly invasive weed to the southern basin of Lough Corrib.
In the picture below the CAISIE team cover a heavy patch of Curly leaved waterweed with jute matting at a slipway in the Knockferry area of Lough Corrib. For more information on invasives see www.caisie.ie

10 meter strips of Jute matting sown together and weighted down will help to stop this curly leaved waterweed in its tracks.

In 6-12 months there will be little to no sign of this matting and the curly leaved waterweed will be eradicated. Native plants will recolonise this area in 3-6 months.

Wind conditions on this day were not suitable to work in the open bay of Annaghdown, so there was a chance to catch up on some of the more sheltered infested sites in Lough Corrib.

Well Dad, this is how fishing for Wrasse goes!

You see Dad, this is how it done !
You see Dad, this is how it done !

Down in the County Clare, Neil is out with his nine year old son.  A chip off the old block !! Here’s Neil’s account of the weekend:

Well I have made no secret of my inability to catch a wrasse on a soft plastic. I have read up on the subject, methods, times, tides you name it. I tried many different lures on many different marks and today……….

……. I had to watch my nine year old do what I have failed to do, and was he gracious about it….not a chance.

With the first calm day in over a week I took Rocco out to North Clare in search of pollack. We stopped off at the flats and landed a few mackerel. Still not around in numbers but we managed a few. I have noticed this year a new breed of tinsel tosser. This one marks his territory by standing his rod in a crevice in the rocks, surrounding it with the rest of his belongings before retreating to his van and waiting until someone else is landing fish before getting out and trying himself. It will all end in tears I am sure!

During one of the many showers we decamped and steered a course for the deeper water, home of the pollack. The swell was a little more than I had anticipated so the lower platforms were off limits but there were still many spots we could fish comfortably and more importantly in total safety. To save time on the mark we had already rigged up Roccos rod with a weed-less Manns Dragin sandeel Texas style,  so once in position he was able to fish away for himself. The six foot, ten to thirty gram rod was much more manageable for him and he was casting confidently into a stiffish head wind. Squeals of over-excitement competed with raucous chiding from common terns who were hunting the sandeel which in turn were being chased by mackerel. I presume It was the same mackerel plucking the lure that were causing squealing and the odd muttered curse from the young lad.

A small  strop was starting to develop fuelled by the fact he was being hit on most casts but couldn’t connect with any fish. I didn’t want to change to a smaller lure for him as I knew it would further limit his casting ability. The strop was deepened when I landed the first pollack, a fish of around two pounds. Many of the pollack I have taken must be laying right on the bottom as they are covered in sea lice. The fish had totally engulfed the jighead and as I flicked it out with my index finger I dropped the fish back into the water which raised the mood slightly.

While changing lure for myself Rocco shouted he had a big fish on, and to be fair the little rod had taken on the shape of a hoop and was lunging downwards. Not taking any prisoners he hauled away up the side of the rocks, the fish must have taken right under his feet as there did not seem to be that much winding going on. When I saw the fish in his hands it was my turn for a little sulk…… a wrasse on LRF gear, his first and a beautiful fish of around two pounds.

You see Dad, this is how it done !
You see Dad, this is how it done !

I am going out early tomorrow……..on my own!

Only joking, I was nearly as thrilled as he was with the catch, if not very slightly envious.

Despite all my safety measures and in an effort to travel lightly I took lure boxes out of my waist-bag and once again left home without an SD card for my camera. Luckily I took these couple on my phone and they came out ok.

A trip down the River Camlin and a wonderful catch of Bream and Roach

Great coat, great smile, great fish !
Great coat, great smile, great fish !

Weather is muggy and wet with very little wind. All the rivers have burst their banks with the Suck and Shannon almost unfishable. The Inny is running high and flowing very hard.

Peter has been busy down on the River Camlin at Clondragh Harbour catching large Bream and Roach. He took Chris for a trip down there and they managed a Tench and a large Hybrid in a few hours of fishing.

Down in Doonis Bog there was some excitement when a Pine Marten popped out for a photo opportunity before climbing to the top of a tree and settling down and going to sleep.
