Anglers fishing from Red Bay confined to shallow waters

The weather has not been kind to us up here at all. We have only managed to get out to the deep water once in the past fortnight. Oh well, its winter after all! But the prospects are looking very good with a few good specimen spur dogs to be had and quite a few juvenile skate on the ground. Getting mackerel and herring is still not a problem mid channel and it reminds me of my adventures in Norway – we don’t even have to hunt the shoals as the birds are doing it for us.

Pike angler on the Barrow gets an unseasonal surprise

Lewis Parr and his Barrow Trout
Lewis Parr and his Barrow Trout

Carlow Coarse Angling Club Junior member Lewis Parr from Graiguecullen managed to net himself a huge suprise whilst fishing for a Pike locally to Carlow town. Lewis a regular on the river Barrow decided to go Pike fishing with his friend Robbie Lacey after finishing school early one day last week. The lads had purchased some Roach to use as bait in search of one of resident Pike in an area known locally as Mikey Websters. After around twenty minutes the rod signaled a bite which could only be a big fish and Lewis immediatley let the tension loose on the reel to allow the fish a fighting chance. Imagine the suprise on the lads faces when a huge brown Trout rose to the surface jumping and kicking in what can only be described as like a scene from Flipper. Lewis eventually managed to net the fish and after a few pics released the fish safe and well back into the river Barrow.

Irish Angling Update, 08/12/11

The winter weather has really arrived here in Ireland in the past week with only very hardy anglers venturing out on mainly inland waters and even then, sport was limited although a few nice fish were captured and returned.

Coarse anglers were out on several locations this week.  There was some nice catches of small roach reported at Corstown Lake near Drumconrath.  Down in Carlow there was news of the successful club appointing children’s officers who hope to encourage many young anglers to take up the sport of fishing.  Senior executive committee members of the Carlow Coarse Angling Club attended a recent presentation ceremony at the Carlow County Council chambers to receive a special Bursary award from the Carlow Sports Partnership.  Another winter league match was held up on the Roslea Lakes near Enniskillen and catches of roach and skimmers dominated catches in the cold weather.

There was a reasonable turn out of forty four anglers who fished the latest qualifier of the Kingspan National Pike Championships at Lakan Lake near Ballyjamesduff.  There was plenty of small pike recorded on the day and the five qualifiers all took catches of over 11 lb. upwards to go forward to the final in May.  There is notice of pike match taking place at Lough Egish soon near Ballybay.  Glenn Brennan caught some nice pike on Lough Gowna and he sent in a nice picture of a double figure pike which he caught and returned and he wins our catch of the week.  There was some nice pike reported from a lake in the Castleblayney area of Co. Monaghan.

There was no sea angling reported this week except for a notice for the Cobh SAC who are running their popular light lines competitions during the winter and details of the events are published here.

As usual there was some nice rainbow trout reported to visitors to the popular Curragh Springs Fishery in Co. Kildare where many different flies produced some good sport.

Cobh SAC has successfully run light line competitions in Cork Harbour over the last two Winter seasons. Once again Cobh SAC will be running a series of these competitions over the next few Winter months. The first will be run on Sunday 11th December 2011.

These competitions are open to all comers and are not restricted to just Cobh SAC members, nor do you have to be a member of another club. They are intended to be fun competitions and appeal to all levels of anglers, whether you are a novice or a seasoned campaigner. Indeed, there has been a diverse mix of experience between the anglers who have fished these comps so far and all have had good fishing. The average number of fish caught per angler per day over the 12 competitions so far has been 38 fish. Now that’s a good return and ensures that even the raw beginners have something to shout about!!!

In a few of the comps some of the anglers have had over 120 fish…that’s some fishing! Species to expect within the Harbour over these months would include Cod, Whiting, Dabs, Lsd’s, Poor Cod, Pouting, Coalfish, Flounder, & Plaice. At the moment Dabs will feature highly and some of these will be to specimen size. As the Winter progresses Cod will feature more and more in the catches. In previous March and April comps it wasn’t unusual for anglers to average over 50+ codling in their catch. To give you some idea of the fishing have a look at some of the reports of previous events herehere, and here. Best baits to use in the comps will be crab, lug, mack, and rag.

The scorecard used for the competitions is the same as that used for the National Fish-Offs. Indeed, the set-up of the comp is identical almost to the National Fish-Offs competition. As a result the light lines are ideal events for the more seasoned anglers to get in practice for these comps. For the less seasoned angler it’s a chance to see how they measure up to the high standards of the top anglers in the country. In any event there is a lot that all anglers can learn.

To make the light lines easier this season there has been a slight change of rule. Instead, of all lines (ie. mainline, rig bodies, & snood) meeting the 15lb b.s. or lower criteria the only stipulation now is that the mainline should be 15lb b.s. or less. This means that you can use a shockleader of any strength and your rig bodies and snoods can also be of any strength.
The competitions will be run on the following dates over the Winter months:

  • Sunday 11th December 2011
  • Sunday 22nd January 2012
  • Sunday 19th Febuary 2012
  • Sunday 25th March 2012
  • Sunday 22th April 2012
Fishing will be from 9:30am till 2:30pm each day with boats departing from Kennedy Pier, Cobh at 9am. Boats used will be from the Cork Harbour Angling Hub charter fleet. The cost of entry is €40 per angler. Now that’s great value!!!

To book your place for Sunday 13th November contact Cobh SAC club secretary, Mary Geary, on 021-4812167 or by email on [email protected]. Come on now….you know its good for ya!!!

Ps. To add an extra element this year, we are accumulating the results over the series of comps on a league basis, similar to a master angler series. So who’s going to be the top light line angler in Cork Harbour for 2011/12? Will it be you?

Also, for those anglers travelling, we’ve negotiated a special deal with the Commodore Hotel if overnight accommodation is required (Oct – March). Bed & breakfast will be available at €29 per person!!!

Small pike dominate catches at the latest pike qualifier on Lackan Lake near Ballyjamesduff.

John Chambers, Chairman of the Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs reports from the www. angling-in-ireland.com website on the latest qualifier of the Kingspan National Pike Championships.  44 anglers turned up to the qualifier in cold conditions on Lackan Lake near Ballyjamesduff on Sunday 4th December with rain and sleet prevailing during the day.  Fishing wasnt too bad with 8 anglers with bags in double figures.   The five qualifiers had total catches of small pike from 11 lb. 8 oz. to 16 lb. 4 oz.  They have qualified to fish in the Final of the 2011/12 Kingspan National Pike Championships which will be held on the 19th May.  The winner in the Final will be crowned the Kingspan National Pike Champion and will captain the top 10 from the Final in the Ireland Vs Great Britain Team International next October.

The top 5 anglers who qualified were
1st Joe McDermott
2nd Joe Clarke
3rd Martin McGrory
4th George Dillon
5th David Murphy.

Nice double figure pike for Glenn Brennan on Lough Gowna.

Glen brennan with a nice double figure pike from Lough Gowna.

My name is Glenn Brennan from Dublin and I was fishing lough Gowna on Tues the 5th Dec  and caught this nice double figure pike drifting on a the boat with a drifting float baited with a sardine.  It was hooked a bit tricky so I wasted no time in weighing it just a quick photo and it was returned to fight another day.  In total we had 3 pike with another pike of 4 lb to a full mackerel and a 6 lb fish which fell to a copper spoon and all fish were returned to the water safely.  Im a great fan of your website as it provides accurate and current information on how the fishing is on a daily basis.  I would also like to say its great to see the fishery board out on the water as I was on lacken lake in Ballyjamesduff last week and was approached by two inspecters out on the lake, they were two nice guys who I had also met last year on lough Ramor so keep up the good work.

Some good pike action at Castleblayney.

Winter pike fishing is never easy, and sub zero temperatures, rain, winds, hail and sleet all conspire to prevent us from going fishing. Sometimes the thoughts of the weather alone is enough to put us off venturing out. But when we do decide to brave the elements we can be surprised at what can turn up. On Wednesday 7th December angling guide Peadar O’Brien and David Byrne Inland Fisheries Ireland spent a few hours fishing in the Castleblayney area. They had all of the weather conditions mentioned above and it was evident that trollling and spinning were not going to work on the day. Two float rods were set up and fishing dead baits at about 10ft the floats drifted at a nice speed in the stiff cold breeze. It wasn’t too long before Davids float dipped subtly under the surface. There was no savage take, the float siddled under and then back up, third dip and David struck. The rod bent and then the line went slack immediately as the fish ran towards the boat. Catching up with the fish and boating a nice beautifully marked fish. Peadar followed soon afterwards with a couple of nice fish. These takes were much better with fish hitting the baits harder. As the afternoon drew in and the weather worsened the lads called it a day. A bitterly cold day was made all the more palatable with three nice winter pike.

Bags of small roach reported from Corstown Lake near Drumconrath.

David Byrne reports that the water levels are up in many of the lakes in the north east and anglers are not venturing out as often as in previous months due to the bad weather. Bags of small roach have been reported from venues such as Corstown but there has not been much in the way of coarse angling reported this week. If you are running a competition or winter league match why not submit the results and we will post it in next weeks report.

Good rainbow trout fishing reported at Curragh Springs Fishery.

Curragh Springs Fishery
The fishing was good all week at Curragh Springs in Co. Kildare with fish being caught all round lake at the beginning of the week. However, as the week progressed many fish were being caught in the margins 3 mtrs. from the bank. All the lucky anglers who have hooked one or more Curragh Springs Rainbows have been delighted by these hard fighting fish in stunning condition.
Water clarity remains very good unaffected by the recent bad spells of weather.
Favourite patterns included Damsel, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker,Hare’s Ear, Diawl Bach, Buzzer, Bloodworm and even Daddy Long Legs and Hopper fished just under the surface.
The frosty nights combined with bright days during the week made things a little harder, but contrary to expectation the fish were still not deep.
Igor Szaraz from Slovakia with a fine Curragh Springs Rainbow caught on a recent visit to the fishery.

Here at Curragh Springs we have now erected new fishing stands on the North side of the lake to make things a little more comfortable while fishing.

Opening times are still 9am till dark 7 days a week during the winter, however for the early riser looking for a good day out arrangements can be made to open from 8am.
