On the River Fane, Bernard Devenney of the Dundalk Salmon Anglers reports that as the salmon fishing season on the Fane comes to an end most anglers will look back on this year as one of the best for many years. What made this year different from others years was the size and quality of the fish being caught. Salmon up to & over 20 lbs were caught, released and lost. During the last week, despite heavy and rising water some excellent fish were landed. John McCaughey, Haggardstown, Dundalk  had a very large fish approximately 17lbs which was released. Anthony Reynolds from Castlebellingham had a lovely 12lb fish, Michael Wilson from Craigavon had two fish for the week, one 11lb and one 7lb. Anthony Carty, Dundalk had a fish of 11lbs which was returned, David Crawley from Dundalk had a fine fish of 8lbs, Stephen McCabe from Dunleer had a fish of 8lbs and Paddy Cudden from Ardee who had two large fish the previous week had another fish this week of 7lbs. There have been many more fish caught by other anglers and in all cases the fish are all larger and heavier than previous years.

On the last day of the 2011 season the Club held its annual end of season competition today 12th October. A total of 8 salmon were landed one of which was released by its captor. This fish weighed 10lbs. Of the 7 fish weighed in 2 fish weighed 10lbs.

Bernard commented “this year there has been a definite increase in the number of Salmon making their way back to the rivers that flow into Dundalk Bay and together with with the excellent  fishery protection being provided by the local staff of Inland Fisheries Ireland the fishing in coming years can only get better”.

Matt Campbell reports that the Dundalk Brown Trout Anglers held their salmon competition on the Fane on the 2nd October. Conditions were poor due to rising water levels which rose 2.5ft with recent rain. Two salmon were caught in the competition weighing 6.5lbs and 4.5lbs. On Monday the 3rd 16b salmon were taken on the clubs waters the biggest of which weighed in at 13.5lbs. Tuesday and Wednesday saw a combined total of 13 fish and an additional 10 salmon were taken up until Tuesday 11th October. The fishing season ends today Wednesday 12th. October.

A few weeks ago Robert Babbington caught and released a lovely cock fish on the Fane. The fish weighed in excess of 14lbs and was returned unharmed to the river.

Colm Sliney, skipper of the Sarah Marie, reports on a good day recently. Colm had a gang out who wanted to target pollack. Dropping anchor on a peak that’s less than 30 minutes from Ballycotton Pier, Colm had his client’s on one of his favourite hotspsots. The lads soon got cracking and lashed out the gilling gear. Within minutes they were all into fish and a steady stream of fish came onboard all day. A good portion of the fish were touching double figures which was great to see. The lads stuck at it all day and even while releasing many fish still had quite a sizeable box of fish by the end of the day.

If you’d fancy a day out with Colm have a look at his website here for contact details. Colm operates on the eastern end of the Angling Hub and fishes the waters off Ballycotton Island and east towards Cable Island.

Richie Ryan’s  good friend Tim Murrell brought out his brother-in-law Billy Mc Gibbon from Britain for a bass session recently. Billy had never caught a bass and Tim promised him he would have success with the Eire Bass Guide. The photo shows Billy with one of 9 bass caught on a very hectic session with Richie. 12 bass were hooked up in total with 9 landed.

When Billy returned from his bass session, his wife asked him what the fishing was like. Billy replied that he had just had the best day of his life – Oops ! Needless to say she was not impressed.

Last trout on the fly this year for Ennell anglers as season closes

Wednesday 12th of October was the end of the trout season for another year on Loughs Ennell and Owel.

I fished Ennell with my good pal Marty Smith from Macklesfield near Manchester on Sunday. Marty is over regularly on business and loved his fishing, and is really looking forward to a few days piking this winter here in the Midlands. On Ennell we were after trout, and it was tough going. We both blanked and I have no problem with that, as it’s not all about the catch. We Dined in Mallackeys Island with John Brennan of Longford, and Aidan Heffernan of Clane, Co Kildare and the lads also had a tough morning session on Ennell. It all changed for the lucky Anglers, as they boated two crackers from Ennell in the Afternoon. I photographed the lads in Whitebridge Bay with their prized catch. John and Aidan are seasoned International Irish Anglers, and at times also need a bit of luck.

DUNNE DEAL FROM ENNELL. Christy Dunne from Edenderry is a regular competition Angler on Owel, and Ennell and is one top class angler. Last week he produced a super 5lbs plus fish from Ennell on an Olive imitation fly. Christy picks up our Angling report in the Offally Topic some weeks. My page runs in Offaly, Meath, and Westmeath Topic publications, and some weeks I hit the wrong page, and it does not run. All can be checked on my site www.midlandangling.com including competition dates.

Pierre Henneron from France is having a ball here in the Midlands catching pike and perch. Pierre is staying at Killinure Cottages on the shores of Lough Ree near Glasson, and we spent a few days on Ree in tough conditions.

It was like a clip from the Perfect Storm film, as I horsed the Honda 20 hp through the waves. I have great respect for the lakes and the weather conditions, but sometime it can change very quickly, and out weather forecasters at times are away with the Birds.

Anyway we had some super pike, and colorful perch on a variety of lures. Pierre latched onto a super pike well in the double figures on spinner bait, and the small Perch also took a fancy to his colorful lures.

Pike to 20 lb around Mullingar for angler back from Oz

pike

Niall Stenson of Mullingar is back home on holidays from Australia, and is reeling in some super fish. This included a fine pike pushing the 20lbs mark. The Stenson name is famous here in the Midlands when it comes to fishing, and its great to see the tradition keeping on line. Niall is home for a few weeks, and I just might hook up with him before he returns.

Skate to 140 lb for anglers off the Antrim coast

Last week we went back to basics hunting the deep water holes for skate, conger, spurs and so on. A few skate were taken up to 140 lb along with plenty of strap congers. Spurdogs are few and far between at the moment but that will change once the squid and whiting move offshore into the deep holes. Weather is still keeping us this side of the channel but but when that changes we will travel further offshore to the best hunting grounds.
