Angling guide Kenny Sloan reported on a recent pike fishing expedition with visiting anglers from Germany, Joachim Kasper and Marlow Kaiser, in the Foxford area. Weather conditions were far from ideal for the visitors, and with a strong wind blowing, boat fishing was not possible for much of the day. However young Marlow Kaiser was delighted when he managed to catch his first ever pike, followed by his second, measuring 86cms and 74cms in length. Sink and draw and float fished roach accounted for Marlow’s two pike. Fishing on the Beara – shore angling report

Plaice
Chris and Mike from Worthing who after catching the almost obligatory 10 lb+ huss and conger went of to see if the winter species had arrived yet. Fishing with lug and crab as bait they found plenty with six plaice up to a fabulous specimen of 3lbs 9ozs and they feel they would have caught more were it not for the 20 odd codling in the 2 to 4 lb bracket who were eagerly grabbing their baits

A lot of action to report of late as summer slides away and autumn starts to appear.

Stewart and Terry Moore were on their first visit to the Beara and it did not disappoint as they caught pollack, conger, wrasse, huss and the biggest starfish I have ever seen!

Harry Mounsey and brother Mike from Cumbria just cannot stay away. They were here earlier in the year and returned to see if Harry could get amongst the big huss that late season can throw up. Conger to 10 lbs, pollack to 7 lbs and wrasse to 4 lbs were caught but it was almost the last cast of the holiday that Harry finally caught his double figure huss, a fine fish of 10 lbs 2 ozs.

Other first time visitors included Phil and Bob from Edingurgh and Steve and Arthur from Bangor. All found a good variety of fish with huss, pollack, conger, wrasse and doggies making up the bulk of the catches.

More first timers in the shape of Barry and Greg Diaper from Suffolk and every day seemed to bring reports of new Personal Bests with double figure conger and huss featuring strongly. One day they caught 15 huss to 10 lbs 8 ozs. For a full report on their trip and some excellent pictures check out http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606278

Although the weather should be getting colder it is unseasonably warm at the moment, although a little damp, not really raining , just damp.

This did not put off Chris and Mike from Worthing who after catching the almost obligatory 10 lb+ huss and conger went of to see if the winter species had arrived yet. Fishing with lug and crab as bait they found plenty with six plaice up to a fabulous specimen of 3lbs 9ozs and they feel they would have caught more were it not for the 20 odd codling in the 2 to 4 lb bracket who were eagerly grabbing their baits. Add to that a few flounder, dabs, huss and an estimated 30 lb conger lost at the net it was quite a day to remember. Next day on a different mark they once again found plenty of cod to 4lb+, several conger and pollack with fish approaching 8lbs.

Big cod
Members of the French angling club Liberty Peche win Catch of the Week for this 25 lb cod.

The last week has seen some very changeable weather with gale force winds followed by the current spell of very mild settled conditions. Overall fishing has been pretty good, particularly for pike and sea anglers though there are a couple of great coarse reports in this week’s Irish Angling Update too.

Salmon angling finished at most fisheries on the 30th of September and those few late fisheries finally wound up on Wednesday. On the River Fane, Bernard Devenney of the Dundalk Salmon Anglers reports that most anglers will look back on this season as one of the best for many years. During the last week, despite heavy and rising water some excellent fish were landed. John McCaughey, Haggardstown, Dundalk had a very large fish of 17lbs which was released. On the last day of the 2011 season the Club held its annual end of season competition on the 12th of October. A total of 8 salmon were landed including one of 10lb which was released by its captor.

Trout anglers enjoyed a great end to the brown trout season on those lakes that closed on Wednesday. In particular anglers on Loughs Sheelin, Ennell and O’Flynn had some great sport. Dessie McEntee won the Garda Divisional Fly Fishing Competition and Open Competition on Lough Sheelin with his beautiful trout of 6lbs 13oz caught on a Cock Robin and the visitor’s section was won by Tony Grehen with a trout of almost 5lbs.

The Irish Angling Development Alliance, Irish Open Feeder Championships was held recently on Lough Muckno and 70 anglers weighed in 2,500lbs of mixed species over the two days of the tournament. At the Monaghan pairs also held on Muckno 46 anglers weighed in a whopping 4,830lbs of coarse fish.  This Years All Ireland Junior River Championship was help on the Mud Flats at Carrick on Shannon. The winner of the Novice section was Andrew Kelly of Leitrim youth coarse fishing club. Darragh McKenzie of Leitrim youth coarse fishing club won the Under 13′s section and Mark Fullen of Killashandra Coarse Angling Club won the under 18′s section.

There was some fantastic pike fishing reported recently. Cor van der Kolk and 3 friends caught 244 pike during a recent angling holiday at Belle Isle, Co. Fermanagh. Most of the fish were taken on traditional spoons. Peadar O’Brien guided for Filip Fontaine and some friends from Belgium on  the local lakes around Carrickmacross where they enjoyed thrilling sport.  Staying in the Monaghan area John Kerr picked up a fantastic 27 lb pike in near Ballybay. The Midlands also fished well with good piking reported from Lough Ree and the Mullingar area. Wayne Oldfield and Paul Dennis, joined Kenny Sloane for a fly-fishing trip, and were well rewarded for their efforts. The pair boated 12 pike, the largest weighing in at approximately 14lb, the rest averaging 8lbs. Large flies tied with Flashabou pearl, silver tinsel, red tinsel and white bucktail were the most productive.

Cork Harbour continues to fish well for sea anglers, particularly those in small boats. Following the Small Boats Festival at which 30 species were landed, the winning boat having 25 of these, French anglers fishing on the small boats provided by Bella Vista enjoyed tremendous success catching loads of bass to about 11lb (all returned). The Frenchmen also excelled at cod fishing with a super 25 lb fish caught and released. This fine fish wins Catch of the Week. With the porbeagle season finished off Antrim anglers fishing with Hamish Currie went back to basics hunting the deep water holes for skate, conger, spurs and so on. A few skate up to 140 lb were taken along with plenty of strap congers.

Congratulations to Mary Gavin Hughes, Europe’s and maybe even the worlds finest female charter skipper. Mary was the only Irish person to take home 2 Gold medals from the European Sea Angling Championships fished recently in Weymouth, England.

This mild weather is not set to last and temperatures will drop as southerly breezes will become fresher. The weekend will see some rain and drizzle and next week is forecast to be much colder. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are predicted along with the first frost of Autumn.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Salmon anglers – don't forget to return your logbooks

Inland Fisheries Ireland would like to remind all salmon and sea trout anglers to return their completed logbooks and any unused gill tags by the 19th October 2011 to their local IFI office. The return of logbooks and unused tags is required under the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations.
Anglers must return their logbooks even if they have had a zero catch. IFI also wishes to advise anglers to ensure that they retain a proof of postage for a period of 12 months. Evidence of postage is vital as failure to return a logbook may result in a fine or prosecution.
The Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme provides valuable salmon data to fishery managers, policy advisors and research scientists. This data is critical for the design and implementation of successful strategies to ensure the conservation of wild salmon and sea trout stocks in Ireland.

Cor van der Kolk and 3 friends caught  244 pike during a recent angling holiday at Belle Isle, Co. Fermanagh.

They found the first couple of days a bit slow, landing only about 15 pike a day,  but with the excellent help of pike guide Colin Chartres they got to know the waters.

They caught most of the fish on spoons (bright colours or silver/ gold) and some on little Rapala wobblers, both on the river and on the lake. On the river most of the pike were found near the shores and on the lake they hung out around any ridges on the bottom of the lake (a depth finder is needed). We caught them both spinning and trolling.

The majority of the pike were jut was just 50-60 cm, but gave great sport nevertheless. As Cor put it   “We caught some smaller and some bigger”. The biggest they measured was 95 cm.

Conditions deteriorate at east coast angling competition, 2 bass and a flounder win

Peter Cunningham reported that at the last East Coast Angling, Drogheda, sea angling competition, seventeen anglers turned out for the one o’clock start and conditions were good, with south east wind turning east on the pushing tide with good surf. Fishing was slow and weed was a constant problem, add driving rain and some competitors found it too much.

By five o clock we had six anglers left conditions calmed and the sun shined and five of the remaining six hooked into bass. Ray Hoey had a 38cm flounder, Tony Brothwood had his first bass and turbot plus flounder to 30cm, Lucka had some nice flounder, Gareth Beckett had  bass to 41cm and the winner Darren Gallagher landed two bass and a flounder won a Sonik sk3 bass rod. Bait used rag worm, razor clam, fished best on the day.

In the North East, Peadar O’Brien guided for Filip Fontaine from Belgium on some of the local lakes around Carrickmacross. Peadar reports that they had some fantastic pike, even though the weather was windy and wet. Also in the company was his friend Chris and Dieter. This was the lads first time in the Monaghan area.

All fish were caught on lures and many misses were recorded as well lost bigger fish which threw the hooks, The lads had a great time and they cant wait to come back already booked in for next year and couldnt believe that there are so many lakes in the area and such good fishing.

If you fancy a days pike fishing with Peadar O’Brien he can be contacted at [email protected]

Already looking forward to the next trip. Chris shows off his catch.

Feeder Championships at Lough Muckno – 70 anglers weighed in 2500lb

Lough Muckno is fishing well at the moment and some terrific weights have been produced from competitions held at the venue over the last few weeks. Bags of 30lbs were produced over the weekend at Concra Wood and Black Island. Feeder and pole are all producing results and catches are mainly of roach, hybrids and skimmers with occasional bream. These September weights will only go to reinforce Lough Muckno’s position as one of the countries top coarse fishing venues.

Angling guide Pat McLoughlin reports that there was little fishing on the Kells Blackwater before the end of the season. Pat met with Claude Gatti from Paris last Friday afternoon and brought him to Lough Sheelin to leave his boat there until the end of the season. Pat reports that they got out from 6pm to 7.15 in poor conditions ( no wind and clouds on the lake) but Claude had a nice wild brown trout of 3.75lb and he had one of 2lb. Not bad for such a short outing.
