Charter skipper Mark Gannon reports on recent deep sea fishing for his clients fishing out from Courtmacsherry.

The fishing over the Holiday weekend was good at the start   and as the weather deteriorated the fishing died off a bit.  On the Friday, fishing with 2 Irish and 2 German anglers we caught a variety of species including Mackerel, Pollack, Coalfish, Pouting, Whiting, Dogfish, Bullhuss, Ling, Conger, cuckoo wrasse, Ballan wrasse, Common Skate, Cod and plenty of sandeel.  The cod were all nice fish, the heaviest at 6 kg. ,the ling medium size and the skate which was tagged previously aprox weight 25 kg,which was caught on light tackle a 12 lb. class rod and a spinning reel.  The Captor, Bert Fritzche from Liepzig in Germany  was well pleased with his catch.

German visitor, Bert Fritzche with a nice Skate.

On the shore the Bass were scarce but fishing with crab produced a few decent fish off Tanners pier, and a Dutch angler fishing off the pontoon last night caught a 3 kg Bass using crab.   Hopefully the weather will settle down in the next few days as the cold north-easterly winds  are not good for fishing.

Tight lines, Mark.

8lb 15oz fish was a prayer answered for Gode at Delphi

Alan Molloy and David Dunne with their catch at Delphi

May 6th: I’m afraid our top rods failed miserably to catch fish at Delphi this week. In fairness to them conditions were pretty hopeless, with only1.3mm of rain since my last update and the continuing pattern of NE winds, so we will forgive them somewhat for this rare blank on their catch sheets.

Bearing in mind the skill and expertise of the anglers who had fished this week and the river  being at 0 it was two anglers from Dublinwho stole the limelight this week. Yesterday morning David Dunne and Alan Mulloy much to everybody’s surprise including my own came up from having spent an hour and a half on the river after landing three fish.

Incredibly two of these fish were sea liced and the other very fresh. David Dunne had two, one of 5lbs1oz in the Turn Pool and the second of approx.7lbs in the Whin. Both fish were taken on a Cascade. Alan Molloy also had his in the Turn Pool. It weighed in at 7lbs13ozs and was also taken on a Cascade.

One would almost think that the fish would have to be dropped in from the sky at this level. But as one of our great regulars always says “You’ll never know the minute” and it also helps when the flies are in the water.

These fish certainly brought renewed enthusiasm to the place but I’m afraid as yet the feat has not been repeated.

May 7th:  It was a great day for John Gode who managed to land his first ever salmon on Doolough yesterday. The fish weighed in at 8lbs15ozs and was taken on the troll.

The fish was relatively fresh, less than a month and needless to say John was a very happy man. He is pictured here with Andrea who was also trying to catch her first salmon.

On the score sheet again was Alan Molloy who had another sea liced fish from the Whin Pool, yesterday. It was taken on a Cascade and weighed in at approx. 6lbs. The river at this stage was at -3.

We got some rain last night and this morning 24.2mm and the river peaked at 15 and is now at 12.

Having said that it didn’t make any difference to Jens Kober on his first visit to Delphi, who within 15 minutes of starting landed a sea liced fish of 6lbs and half an ounce on a Collie Dog from the Whin Pool. The fish was netted by Heribert Konvalin who having fished all last week and still hasn’t  got off the mark, did well not to knock the fish off and throw Jens in the river.

Hopefully we will get a bit more rain this week as there seems to be a good number of fish on the way.

It looks like there is definitely some rain coming this week so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Tope on a kayak – the freedom and excitement of kayak fishing

Gary Robinson at the Kayakfishingblog.com connected with tope on a recent angling trip…

“After letting out a “Whoop” of delight I decided to head for shore. I would have loved to stay out for a little longer and capture a few more pictures but the wind was starting to pick up again and I figured that the best option for me was to quit while I was ahead. Job done! I had a smile on my face all the way back to shore and as I thought more about the encounter it dawned on me that catching the few tope on a kayak this year has possibly been the most fun I have ever had whilst holding a fishing rod. Once again I can safely say that I would wholeheartedly recommend kayak fishing to anybody. The freedom and enjoyment it can give is fantastic and it is a lot cheaper than buying and maintaining a boat. Having said that, nobody should be venturing out to sea in on a kayak, fishing or otherwise, without learning all the safety drills and carrying all the required safety equipment. No fishing experience or trip is worth trading a life for. Now, here’s hoping for a wind free summer this year……….but who knows what the Irish weather will throw at us this summer!”

Here’s a short youtube video of the entire fish

Sunshine and a 'secret' location led Kevin to his first Bass in forty years

Kevin Cronin
Kevin Cronin

Jim Hendrick enjoyed a brilliant day on Wednesday May 2nd with Kevin Cronin, polar explorer and sailor – they went south out of the influence of the persistent north easterlies
He tells us “Sunshine, ‘secret’ locations and blue skies lead us to fish today in the improving conditions. God knows its been difficult enough for the past few days and now with a bit of luck it might hold over this set, but I’m not holding out too much hope regarding the weather.
Fly and lure fishing were the order of the day and its Kevin’s first bass he’s caught in more than forty years – it was worth the wait and now a long fishing summer and autumn lies ahead for him to enjoy.

Great hatches of Iron Blue Duns on the Suir but North east winds making casting difficult

Mark Lundell from Chicago

On May 1st Andrew Ryan from Clonanav, Ballymacarbry was guiding Chicago Dentist Mark Lundell -a great guy! What a day to be out on the river but they did get a few fish. It was hard to get into the water in most places but they tried a few secret spots on a tributary of the Suir. The morning began with some heavy rain so they started off on his casting ponds – had a few fish there. Then on to the river streamer fishing – the fishing was tough as the water was still really high – but Mark battled hard here are a few photos.

May 5th: Clonanav Fly Fishing  held a nymph fishing clinic at their shop and on the river Suir. The focus of the clinic was to highlight the benefit of fishing with heavier nymphs on the Suir.  The clinic covered flies, leader set up, tackle, techniques, watercraft, reading the water and general techniques.

They were using the new Greys Streamflex 10ft #3 and it is fantastic on the Suir. The weather was windy and cold but they hooked and landed a few fish. The bigger ones got away!  For the rest of the season Clonanav are running a series of clinics on different aspects of fly fishing.

Andrew tells us that the past few days have seen some great hatches of Iron Blue duns on the river.  The trout have been feeding on them in the afternoon from about 2.30 on wards. Earlier in the week they had a lot of heavy rain which brought water levels up and flooded most of the rivers. This really freshened things up and now the fishing is really improving.

North east winds are making the casting and conditions difficult and are set to continue into next week.  As soon as we get some good weather fishing should really improve.  Andrew was out on Thursday and Friday with Conor Lynch and they had some good but hard earned fish.  They caught some on IBDs and some on PTN flashbacks.

14.2lb salmon for Tim Harty on the Blackwater

Ian Powell on the Munster Blackwater reports:

On May 5th There was another good flood just fining off on the river. As expected the river came into excellent order. The gauge at Ballyduff was on 0.58m in the morning & only fell very slowly during the day to 0.55m at dusk.  The clarity was a good three feet on the lower river. The upper river also dropped only very slowly but fined off very well with clarity around 4 feet. There were a number of reports of fish moving on the upper river – albeit somewhat sporadically.

It turned out to be the Best Day of the 2012 Season so far….! Four fish were caught in total for the day by just nine rods fishing and there were 2 fish lost at the net.  Three fish fish came from the upper river – 2 on spinner & 2 on the fly – of which 2 were released.  Two were extremely fresh (sea-lice just fallen off) & one had been in for 1/2 weeks. There was one very fresh fish caught on spinner on the lower river.

On May 6, the  Biggest Fish of the Season so Far was caught by Tim Harty from Co. Limerick – a sea-liced 14.2lb on fly from the lower river just a mile above the Lodge (above). A 10.4lb. on spinner was also caught the same day from our very top beat 45km upriver.

May 7th: A party of 4 Norwegians started fishing on Monday. The first day they were fishing Upper & Lower Kilmurry where they  hooked 6 & landed & released just one of 5lb. (see above). On Tuesday 8th. they released another 5lb & lost a double figure fish. All the fish were met on fly.  A second fish was also caught on worms on the upper river on Tuesday.
On Wednesday 9th., another 2 fish were caught – an 8lb on fly & a 4lb on spinner – both on the upper river.

Bengt Are Barstad (Norway) - ~5lb. sea-liced.
Bengt Are Barstad (Norway) - ~5lb. sea-liced.

Prospects: Another small dirty flood hit the upper river on Thursday & the lower river on Friday (11th.). The forecast is then dry over the weekend & well into next several week.
We can expect some fantastic sport as soon as the conditions settle, and we can expect the upper river to start seriously fishing from now on, especially as the May run gets under way.

Availability: There is no problem at the moment for availability for fishing and accommodation in the coming weeks.

Minister Fergus O Dowd, Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources launched FAW today with the exciting announcement that the permit fee is waived for fishing on Inland Fisheries Irelands trout and coarse permitted fisheries during FAW.  Minister O Dowd noted that ‘recreational fishing in Ireland is often a shared family or group activity, contributing to community cohesion and development. It also provides benefits through its outdoor, physical nature for individuals, and brings a shared responsibility of our fisheries resources.’

Encouraging everyone to get involved, Suzanne Campion, Head of Business development with IFI stated  ‘This is a great opportunity to try fishing. There is old fishing gear lying in the back of sheds all around the country and now is the time to dust it off and get together with friends and family  for a fun days fishing. Simply go to www.faw.ie for details of events or to apply for your free permit.’

FAW events include Balsam Bashes, Flytying,  Family Fun Days, sea, pike, coarse and game angling. Some are IFI events while many have been organised in conjunction with Angling Clubs and Federations, City and Town Councils and An Taisce . Most events are free, while some require advance booking . There are 70 events in 22 counties, so there is plenty of choice and opportunity.

Ballybay Angling Association's Spring Clean Up

Ballybay Anglers Association clean up
Ballybay Anglers Association removed over 50 bags of rubbish from local lake shores

On Saturday the 5th May a spring Clean Up was organised for the lakes in the Ballybay area. The lakes in question were Drumlona, Bairds shore, Bream Rock, and Lough Major. Whilst we cant tar everybody with the same brush, it is sad and disgraceful to think that both anglers and non anglers are leaving rubbish behind them after a days fishing or a day trip out.

Ballybay Anglers Association clean up
Ballybay Anglers Association removed over 50 bags of rubbish from local lake shores

Most of the rubbish collected were beer cans, beer bottles, and groudbait bags. However, more disturbingly needles were found at one lake in particular with god only knows what consequences it would have if somebody stood on it. Our lakes once known as beauty spots are unfortunately turning into dumping sites.
Approx 50-60 bags of rubbish was collected, more could have been collected but overgrown bushes and brambles hindered collecting rubbish in the undergrowth, and also the lack of man power.
A big thank you goes out to all who turned out to help with this clean up and also to Monaghan County Council for supplying the bin bags and the skip.

In advance of Fisheries Awareness Week which will commence on Saturday next 12th May, the Irish Angling Development Alliance (IADA) and Carrickmacross Coarse Angling Club in association with Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) ran two information days at O’Gormans Supervalu supermarket in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan on Friday and Saturday last 4th and 5th May. The information days were organised to promote the main event; which will take place on Saturday 12th May at the Brothers Lake (Lisanisk), and to let people find out about what will be happening on the day and to give them a chance to sign up for the event. The interactive stand had fish tanks containing an assortment of different fish species including pike, trout, eels, gudgeon and roach which proved very popular with children and adults alike. The feedback that was received by staff about the stand was very positive indeed. Computer slideshows, promotional materials and staff from IADA, Carrickmacross CAC and IFI all provided additional information to members of the public.

Filming on the fly – The Irish Times

ANGLING NOTES: ‘I HAD NEVER caught a salmon in over 41 years of fishing and we were out on a drift on Lough Currane and I said to Richie, ‘This is a bit of a dour place.’ Five minutes later I was stuck into my first spring salmon. Needless to say, we bleeped out all the profanities,” declared Charlie Stuart at the recent launch of the film, Sea to Stream – a Salmon and Sea Trout Season on Lough Currane, in the Morgan Hotel, Temple Bar, Dublin……The Irish Times….07/05/12…..read full article…
