New angling service launched on Lough Derg

courtesy of Peter Gleeson

Two Lough Derg fishermen have combined their expertise to establish an enterprise guiding visiting anglers around the lake. The venture was launched by local Labour Party minister Alan Kelly on Friday last.

Irish Fishing Tours, the brainchild of Portroe natives Paul Bourke and Danny Tiernan, provides  customised fishing holidays on the Shannon’s largest lake.

Based in the picturesque harbor village of Garrykennedy, Irish Fishing Tours provides a comprehensive service to anglers that encompasses a guide service, boat/tackle hire and food and accommodation.

Danny and Paul have been fishing the lake all their lives and they are well placed to show visiting anglers the best fishing locations and advise on fishing methods while taking into account the needs of experienced anglers.

They will provide anglers with a number of accommodation options and they aim to highlight the variety of other attractions and activities which the lake has to offer to visitors.

Danny and Paul  have acquired two top of the range aluminium boats that provide all the comfort  and equipment that the most expert angler could wish for.  Also for hire are traditional 19 foot lake boats  powered by four-stroke engines.

Speaking at the launch of the service in the award winning Larkin’s Bar & Restaurant in Garrykennedy  Paul Bourke said: “Our motivation in starting up this enterprise is based on our passion for fishing and our love of the outdoors. We are doing something we love everyday.”

Paul said he and Danny had an interest in all methods of angling, particularly for the huge pike that abound in the lake and ferox trout.

Explaining one of the reasons for setting up their enterprise, Paul added: “We did a lot of research on angling tourism and discovered that a problem for people visiting Lough Derg was that the lake was  under developed  for water based tourism. We saw a gap in the market.”

He said Irish Fishing Tours placed a big emphasis of conservation of the wild fish species. They operated a policy of releasing fish they caught back into the lake.

Local Minister Alan Kelly described the new guiding service as a fantastic idea and he congratulated the North Tipperary Leader company  for providing funding towards the project. “The potential here is more than just promoting fishing. It’s about tourism and the contribution this can make to the local economy.”

The minister, who formerly worked in the tourism sector, said he would be using his contacts to introduce the Paul and Danny to the marketing people in Fáilte Ireland so that word of their service was spread throughout the international angling sector.

Chairman of the North Tipperary Leader company John Carroll said that rural areas need enterprising people like Paul and Danny to create added value tourism initiatives along the Shannon. He complimented the staff of North Tipperary Leader for their support and guidance throughout the application process and wished the two men well with their project.

Sean Crowley of North Tipperary Leader said the new guiding service was just one of a number of projects which his company had funded to promote Derg as a top class angling amenity. He said Leader was also  funding a study aimed at conserving the native fish in the lake and had allocated funds aimed at protecting wild trout stocks.

First Salmon in Galway

Local angler Sean O'Toole with the first salmon of 2012 from the Galway Fishery

The first salmon of the 2012 season has finally been landed in Galway. After 5 weeks of very high water, the OPW finally closed a number of gates on Friday the 9th, lowering the river level to a nice fishable level, with 4 sluice gates open. Local angler Sean O’Toole took full advantage, catching a nice silver fish to kickstart the season here. The fish was small for a springer, at 5.5lbs, but beautifully proportioned and gave a good account of itself. A couple of sea lice showed how fresh it was, probably just off the tide. Sean is a well-known supplier of shrimp to anglers in Galway, and used one of his own shrimps to tempt the fish.

Another fish was spotted in the top pool just 5 minutes after Sean landed his first fish, and with the water level remaining at 4 gates open, conditions are perfect for spring fishing. Weather conditions this week are also perfect, and hopefully we will have more Galway salmon to report soon.

Quiet Start to the Season on the Boyne

Boyne Trout
10 Year Old Evin Forde with one of his Wild Brown Trout taken on the Boyne at Navan

Ian Forde from Navan Anglers reports that it has been a quiet first week on the river, although water levels and clarity were perfect for the fly. There are quite a few kelts still about and hopefully the next flood will push them all back out to sea. Its nice to see a good few anglers about, and with some solid reports of fresh fish showing by seasoned anglers, it will only be a matter of time before the first Springer is landed. With mild weather forecast over the weekend, the Trout boys will be dusting their rods off and getting out. Streamers have been very effective in the early season and pictured is Evin Forde (10) with the best of a 3 fish haul he got in an afternoon on the ramparts this week.

Irish Angling Update – 08/03/12

The lovely spring weather continues and though it is sometimes cold, conditions are generally good for all angling activity in freshwater and at sea.  Water levels are a bit low around the country for good salmon fishing but a few fish were reported.  The best fishery in the past week was the River Drowes where there was consistent fishing with some lovely fresh fish caught.  Down in Kerry, there were four fish recorded on the River Flesk and Hughie Reid caught his first ever salmon on Lough Currane.  Well known angling guide, John Scanlan caught a fine 11 lb. fish on the River Feale.   Other fisheries to report fish were Melvin, Delphi and there was a nice 12 lb. fish from the lower Kilmurray beat of the Munster Blackwater.  Two salmon were reported from the River Moy in Ballina and the first salmon of the season was taken on Carrowmore Lake.

Chris Logan and his first ever skate
Chris Logan wins Catch of the Week with his first ever skate

There were few reports from the sea this week but Chris Logan caught his first ever skate fishing with charter skipper Hamish Currie out from Red Bay.  It weighed 153 lb. and it is our Catch of the Week for the lovely photo of the great fish and a very happy Chris.  There is a fund-raising competition this weekend for the 2012 Ireland Boat Angling Team going to France later in the year, and details of contacts and entry at Cobh are in the report.

There were two major coarse competitions on in Co. Fermanagh last weekend where a group of Juniors had good catches of small roach at the Waterways Junior Classic at the Lakelands Forum in Enniskillen.  There was another leg of the senior float only competition on the Roslea loughs near Clones on Sunday last and some nice catches were reported.

There was plenty of trout fishing reported from around the country this week. Down in Waterford, the two reservoirs Knockaderry and Carrigavantry got off to a good start with some fine brown trout up to 5 lb. along with good catches of Rainbows.  Over in the west wetfly fishing was very good for anglers fishing on Lough Mask and on Corrib, the first signs of duckfly were seen.  There was a report of early sedge hatches on Lough Melvin. On Lough Conn, there was some good flyfishing for the few anglers who have ventured out.  The lough at the Eclipse Centre near Kenmare came alive in the mild weather with hatches of Duckfly bringing some nice trout to 2 lb. on the fly. In the midlands, plenty of browns and rainbows were encountered on Lough Lene near Collinstown in Co. Westmeath.  The season opened brightly on the River Fane in Co. Louth and many brown trout were caught and released on fly by anglers using New Zealand style.

The Hooked Live show is on this weekend at the Citywest Hotel. There is plenty to see and do at the show and it is on Saturday and Sunday  Check the website for a full list of events at www.hooked.ie

You can listen into an angling update report given by me on the Seascapes programme going out on air on Friday the 9th of March on RTE 1 at 10.30pm and also on their website at http://www.rte.ie/radio1/seascapes/

I am on leave for the next two weeks returning Wednesday the 28th of March 2012.  Please send in any angling reports to our webmaster, Myles Kelly in my absence at [email protected]
