Lough Muckno Produces 28.5lb Pike

The Irish Angling Development Alliance (IADA) reports that Spring has got off to a fantastic start in the South Monaghan area with all the old reliable’s such as Lough Muckno, Capragh, Na-Glack and Monalty producing some fantastic fishing in all quarters. Pike in large numbers have been taken from both shore and boat with all methods being applied and all producing fish from 5lb to a staggering 28.5lbs. Large numbers of pike in the 12lb to 18lb and the 28.5lb (full mackerel) have been taken on Lough Muckno in Castleblaney recently.

Lough Na Glack in Carickmacross has been producing large numbers of pike from 6lb to 12lb and its sister lake Monalty has replicated the same results on the fly.  All methods have produced good results on both lakes. Capragh Lake has also produced good numbers of Pike but weights recorded have generally been smaller. Again all methods have produced different levels of success.

Emyvale and District Anglers Look to the Future

Emy Youth
Local Emy and District Youth Angler Cormac with his and Emys 1st Wild Brown Trout of 2012

Emy & District Anglers Ltd, based in Emyvale, Co Monaghan are continuing with their successful youth development policy in 2012. In an effort to recruit new anglers to the sport the club recently hosted the first of a number of planned fly fishing YOUTH workshops on Saturday February 25th on Emy Lough, Emyvale, Co. Monaghan. A number of aspiring young anglers attended including, Cadhla Mc Kenna, Calum Mc Kenna and Cormac Watterson. Following the workshop, Cormac successfully managed to catch his and Emy’s first wild brown trout of 2012 (approx 2 lb see photo) at around 3.30pm. Cadhla Mc Kenna was also into a good trout but unfortunately it got away.  The mild weather has brought out the early ‘duck-fly’ hatch along the peaceful bathing shore.  The trout pictured below fell according to the ‘Derrygasson Upper’ a ‘secret fly’ a friend gave Cormac last season. The trout was safely returned to the lake to have the chance to grow bigger and fight again another day. Many thanks to adult helpers Liam Murray, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Enda Fields, Martin Mc Kenna (Oriel Park) & Martin Mc Kenna (Drumully) for attending and providing advice at the workshop.

Early sedges on Melvin should improve trout fishing

There were varying conditions over the week on Lough Melvin though it was a drier week overall. The weekend was fairly miserable however giving cold wintery conditions with some hail.

The trout fishing was fairly quiet and I have only heard of a few decent trout caught. On a brighter note, the hatch of early sedges seems to have begun in earnest and this should improve the trout fishing.

Dropping water on the Drowes but a few salmon about

05 March: The water level has dropped further to 0.6 metres on the gauge following a weekend which was much drier than had been forecast.

On Friday, Brian McEvoy had a good day catching and releasing 2 salmon weighing 7 & 8lb from above & below Lennox’s Bridge and there was a mid double hooked on a fly from The Blackwater and lost at the net. Sunday was a bitterly cold day and no fish were reported despite a good turn out of rods.

Today, Monday 2 fish were reported. M. Mc Evoy had a beautiful sea liced fish of 13lbs on prawn from the telegraph pole at Lennox’s and B. Grimes had a sea liced 7lbs fish on a green butt Cascade variant from the Perch Pool.

The forecast for the coming week is for wetter and somewhat colder temperatures at times so water levels in the river will remain good. With the increasing steadily increasing run of salmon, prospects are good.

Four salmon reported from the River Flesk.

Eileen Carroll reports that approximately 4 salmon were landed for the week averaging 7 lb. to 8 lb. each from the River Flesk near Killarney where water levels were described at medium height.
