First salmon of the year on fly reported from Lough Currane

Mark Knowles with the first salmon of the year of 10 lb. on fly on Lough Currane

Angling guide and ghillie, Vincent Appleby reports on the latest fishing reports from Lough Currane.

20/2/12  UK Angler, Mr. Mark Knowles, fishing with his Ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, caught the first Salmon on the fly and a cracker of a fish it was weighing in at 10 lb., and Mark was telling me that he had one hell of a battle with my Noble Salmon and we know who won, so congratulations to Mark and his Gillie. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with light rain at times.

Mark Knowles with the first salmon of the year of 10 lb. on fly on Lough Currane

21/2/12 All quiet on the SW front Except for the 0dd Kelt being caught.

22/2/12 All the head lines go to Mr. Mark Knowles of the UK and for good he caught a lightening fresh 6 lb salmon on the fly, as always Mark was with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with light misty rain, and just for the record it made a small flood early this morning.

23/2/12 There was a fine 6 lb. Salmon caught on the troll by Local Gillie, Mr. Bob Priestly, and if a ever an Angler deserved my Noble gentlemen the Salmon Bob did, and the reason I say this is because Bob was telling me that he has caught 46 Kelts this season, that’s some going. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with light misty rain.

Bob Priestly with a nice salmon from Lough Currane

24/2/12 All quiet on the SW front, except for a few Kelts being caught. Wind NE light to calm.

25/2/12 There were a few boats out, and all failed in their duties procuring my Noble Gentlemen the Salmon. Wind west light with light misty rain at times.

26/2/12 Same results s yesterday except for a couple of Kelts being caught. Wind S and overcast with light misty rain for most of the day. That is your ration for this week, from your Gillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery.

27/2/12

All quiet on the SW front in all departments except for one or two Kelts being caught. Wind SW light to calm.

28/2/12

All quiet in all departments, but to be fair to my Noble Fly Anglers, there was little to no wind and what wind was there was coming from the South.

No Spin No Fly’s just facts.

Senior committee members of the Carlow Coarse Angling Club recently made the journey to Kilsheelen in Co.Tipperary to take part in a Water Safety Course being ran by the Angling Council of Ireland. West Coast Shore League off to a great start

The first leg of the Grauvell West Coast Shore League 2012 was held on Saturday last at the stony beach in Renvyle, Co. Lough Mask Continues to Fish Well

Ronan Cusack reports that Mask remained in top form again this week with some excellent bags reported. Water levels and weather conditions were very unsettled mid-week, with huge downpours at night and high winds during daylight hours.  Local Tourmakeady anglers Liam Conroy and Peter Gossan fished on Wednesday last and they had 3 fish for their day (best fish 1.5lbs). Liam fished again on Thursday with boat partner Michael Shovlin and they had another 8 trout (best fish 2lbs and all returned). Liam described the fishing as extremely lively for this time of year with plenty of well-conditioned small trout freely taking the fly. Brian Hall from Hall’s Angling Centre had 5 fish in Cahir Bay on Thursday last (best fish 2lbs, again all returned). John Brennan and friend from Longford fished on Sunday last and they had 8 fish for their day (best fish 1.75lbs). John also reported returning numerous undersize fish throughout the day. Adrian Armitage and partner from Westmeath had 7 fish to wet flies on Sunday (best fish 2lbs).  Adrian was very impressed with their days sport and hoped it was an indication of what was in store for the season ahead.

Overall Mask is fishing extremely well and definitely worth a trip.

Lough Conn prepares for the 2012 season

Over the past week a few anglers have ventured out on Lough Conn, with limited success. However, with increasing temperature forecast for the coming days, angling opportunities should improve as should catch reports!

Excellent fishing reported on Lough na Leibe

Ballymote and District Angling Club have reported a very productive week on Lough na Leibe. An increase in temperature, combined with water levels dropping close to normal level, has seen a substantial increase in invertebrate and fish activity. Almost 200 trout were landed over the past week, with all but a few returned. The increased temperature towards the end of the week saw the first small hatches of insects, witnessed by anglers on the lough. These included small duck-fly, brown and dark olive buzzers and small lake olives. This brought a considerable number of fish close to the surface of the water. Some club anglers had great sport, with Vice Chairman Bernard McDermott recording over 40 trout for two days fishing. Other Club members including Dave Cadman, Francis Brady and Martin Lawrence recorded catches well into double figures. Many other Club anglers also enjoyed great sport over the week, too many to name. If you have a catch to report please e-mail it to the Club email address available on the Club website www.ballymoteangling.com. Successful fly patterns included the Sooty Olive nymph, Duckfly emerger, Pheasant Tail nymph and various lure patterns such as the Nomad, Orange Blob, the Booby in various colours and the Woolly Bugger.
