Tope possibile off north Wicklow beaches if weather settles

October can be a very good time for tope fishing in North Wicklow providing boat anglers with a chance to catch a 40lbs plus fish. However the calm, settled conditions boat anglers require for this have been scarce.  Shore anglers can target tope on the North Wicklow beaches at this time of year as the big females will patrol these beaches at night up until the end of November.

Anglers wishing to target shore tope will need to fish a few days after Westerly winds to allow the weed to drop out of the sea. Slack tides tend to be easier to fish, terminal tackle needs to be strong, pulley rigs help distance casting and rubbing leader of over 120lbs is recommended.  Reels should be filled with up to 350 yards of line.  Small whiting have been turning up on the Wicklow beaches, however the first of the frost should bring some more in.  In relation to tackle, use medium length snoods and size 2/0 hooks, use short snoods in weak tides.

East coast bass angling picks up – crab best bait

Bass anglers fishing from the shore have had what only can be described as a difficult season. Many factors contribute to this including onshore winds.

In recent days there has been a noticeable improvement in numbers of bass taken by shore anglers on the Wexford and Wicklow beaches. Oisin Cahill had a fine 6lbs bass on crab at Kilcoole beach during the week. Kilgorman produced 3 bass between 3lb and 5lbs to a Dublin angler fishing at the mouth of the river. The bass fishing has picked up on the Wexford beaches particularly in South Wexford.

Crab is the number one bait, however lug has also worked well. The extended warm Autumn has allowed anglers using lures and plugs to capitalize on these late run bass with some bass even being recorded in Dublin.

Flounder gathering in South Wicklow and Wexford estuaries

Over the last week flounder numbers started to gather in the South Wicklow and Wexford estuaries. Good numbers of flounders have been caught and thankfully as more anglers are now using Gemini disgorgers there are far less fatalities being found. Most flounders are being released safely. Anglers should familiarize themselves with how to use a Gemini disgorger as it can be put under the gill cover and out through the flounders mouth.  The snood can be placed in the ring and taken back through the gill.  Allowing the angler to pull the snood and turn the hook, it can then be pushed back out through the flounders mouth. The hook can also be cut off.  As flounders at times can give very little bite indication and regularly engulf the bait this tool is highly recommended. The best bait generally tends to be peeler crab or crab lug cocktails. Long snoods, small crab hooks and 4/5oz non grip leads work well for estuary fishing. Some anglers like to add coloured beads to their snoods particularly in coloured water.

The Burrow beach in Kilmore, Wexford is producing coalfish to 40cms the best bait to use is crab, lug or mussel.

Colm Lynch reports that pike fishing was kicking off well prior to this weeks deluge. In the past few weeks the pike trade took off with anglers keen to get their hands on the latest gear. We had our first competition of the year recently down Shercock direction and the day started off bright and sunny before the rain arrived. Eleven fish were landed in total with twenty four anglers on the bank. Taking top honours on the day was Jimmy Clarke winning both first prize and the pool.

Colm Lynch had a chance to get out on Saturday with great success. Between himself and John Baker they had four fish for 64 lb the best was one beauty of my own coming in at 24.5 lb caught on a “luce baits ” roach  on a midlands lake.

Colm now advises that there is full range of all pike necessities now in stock at the eastcoastangling angling stores. The stock includes Fox, Salmo and Salvage gear, together with a full range of the anglers favorite dead bait  ” luce  baits “.

Angling guide Peadar O’Brien reports that he has had some great pike fishing before the recent heavy rain. In recent outings Peadar has had pike of 22lbs, 15lbs, 13lbs, 9lbs and 7lbs. These fish were complemented by a large number of smaller jack pike.

Irish angler wins gold at 2011 Home International Bank Fly Fishing Championship

Terry Kelly
Terry Kelly from the Irish bank fly fishing team won Individual gold in the 2011 Home International Bank Fly Fishing Championship

Congratulations to the Irish bank fly fishing team who came a very respectable second in the 2011 Home International Bank Fly Fishing Championship held on Barfinnihy lake, Kenmare Co Kerry. This is the second such competition to be held and is set to grow into a major home nation’s event into the future.

Ireland’s Terry Kelly took the Individual gold on a day that could only be described as extremely difficult. Temperatures dropped into low single figures and with a stiff breeze blowing from the North West the fish were not feeding as good as they had been during the practice days. Nevertheless this didn’t stop the anglers showing off their skills and bagging up on a number of occasions.

Team Scotland took the gold, team Ireland took the Silver, and team England took the bronze leaving team Wales with the “wooden spoon”.

Maurice Willis Chairman Munster Regional Trout Angling Council thanked all the teams and helpers in his address but especially all the sponsors who helped make the event such a success. He also acknowledged Inland Fisheries Ireland for providing the venue and also for sponsoring the event.

183lb skate on 12lb rod plus lots more great inshore fishing

skate
Glenn Drennan wins catch of the week fo this 183lb skate caught unexpectedly on light gear

Terry Jackson, specimen hunter and angling writer, sent us this report from a recent sea angling trip:

Pollack
Glenn Drennan and his 10lb pollack

On a recent trip aboard my Red Bay Fast Fisher, the weather was horrendous with near gale force wind and torrential rain. Being quite “certifiable”, we still wanted a day out on the water somewhere, even if it was simply sheltered behind a headland fishing for pollack and wrasse. We opted for the north coast as this would give us a little protection from the strong southerlies.

Cuckoo wrasse
A specimen cuckoo wrasse

In the lee of the headland, we managed to find some fantastic pollack fishing on light tackle, with fish to double figures and also a bonus specimen cuckoo wrasse. As the tide turned and the area became un-safe, we decided to anchor over an in-shore sand bank in the hope of finding a small ray or two. After a few obligatory dogfish, Glenn and Big Phil found a blonde ray each, before Glenn lifted into something some-what larger!

183lbs female skate and one delighted angler

It was obvious he had found a common skate that had ventured close in to shore. This in itself is interesting, but  the skate was taken on 12lbs class tackle and a light flouro-carbon  hook-length. Playing the fish with a great deal of skill for over an hour, he managed to bring it to the surface and realise his goal of landing a “ton-up” fish. The measurements put the female skate at 183lbs. Glenn deserves a pat on the back for landing such a sizeable fish on very light tackle.
