Good results on feeder and pole at Muckno

Lough Muckno continues to fish well at the moment and some great catches have been recorded by pleasure and competition anglers during the last week. Water levels were high over the weekend with a slight tinge of colour and there were squally showers and light onshore winds. On Saturday last 15th October 4 anglers of international standard from the Irish Angling Development Alliance (IADA) test fished a stretch at Yellow Island on Lough Muckno and produced nice mixed bags which were just short of 30lbs. Feeder and pole both produced results. Anglers fishing with the pole fished maggot at 11.5m and 14m over pinkies and caster. Catches consisted mainly of roach, hybrids and skimmers with occasional bream to 5lbs being recorded. Feeder was fished to 30m and again good catches of roach, skimmers and hybrids were recorded. The best weight of the day was recorded by Dick Caplice from Carrickmacross with 27lbs 1oz.

On the following day Sunday 16th October there was a competition between Lough Muckno CAC and South Armagh CAC at the Concra Wood Upper stretch on Lough Muckno. Fishing was difficult following the overnight drop in temperatures and water levels were still high and slightly coloured. A total of twenty anglers fished and the event was won by Philip Jackson from Lurgan with 21lbs. Second position went to Jim McAlastair from Armagh with 17lbs and third place went to Andy Chapman from Ballybay with 11lbs. Catches consisted of roach with small numbers of skimmers and hybrids. All fish caught on both days were in pristine condition and full of fight.

Shaun Hegarty reports a mixed week weather-wise at the Curragh Springs Fishery which led to variable fishing conditions. On some days the fish were near the surface taking daddy long legs, CDC, sedge and hares ear and on other days much deeper taking small lures, Cats Whisker, Montana and damsels. Wet flies and nymphs are still catching fish. Buzzers were also doing well all week although they need to be retrieved. Water clarity is excellent and all areas are fishing well. Brothers Patrick and J.P. Gibson had a good day recently at Curragh Springs, both catching some very fine hard fighting Rainbow.

The season for visiting groups of fishermen from overseas is drawing to a close and the last group we had at Courtmacsherry  was a party of anglers from Boulogne sur mer in France. The weather was unsettled but we still managed to get out shark fishing and caught blues to 2.2m, the heaviest caught by Christian Chantry.  We also had blue of 1.7m for Claude Friscourt and a blue of 2m for Dominic Grenier.

No Luck with the skate. We have found that you need calm to moderate conditions for skate fishing.

On the inshore reefs we had good sport using jellies and live bait with good pollack to 10lbs ,cod to 12lbs, medium coalfish and ling to 14lbs.

We managed to get to the wrecks on one occasion and had 30 ling to 15lbs, cod to 12lbs, conger to 30lbs.

Inshore we had a go at the bass with live sandeel and I landed 2 Bass to 5lbs but they were the only fish we saw in 4hrs of fishing.

A Dublin group fished on the Lady Louise last Sunday the 16th October. We started first on the inshore reefs were we caught plenty of mackerel, loads of joeys which we kept alive, good Pollack and coalfish. The wind was light SW so we decided to head off to a wreck some 20 miles out, hopefully for bigger fish. Using live bait on flowing traces and strips with jellies we caught pollack and cod to 9lbs, ling to 10lbs, haddock to 4lbs and conger to 15lbs.

Young German Angler lands his first ever pike on a recent visit to County Mayo.

Angling guide Kenny Sloan reported on a recent pike fishing expedition with visiting anglers from Germany, Joachim Kasper and Marlow Kaiser, in the Foxford area. Weather conditions were far from ideal for the visitors, and with a strong wind blowing, boat fishing was not possible for much of the day. However young Marlow Kaiser was delighted when he managed to catch his first ever pike, followed by his second, measuring 86cms and 74cms in length. Sink and draw and float fished roach accounted for Marlow’s two pike. For a days guided pike angling in the Foxford region contact Kenny Sloan through www.pikemania.co.uk or telephone +353 (0)949256501 or +353 (0)879670310.

Fly caught trout to 5lb 12oz on Sheelin's closing day

Wednesday October 12th heralded the end of the fishing season on Lough Sheelin for another year. Lough Sheelin, from the words She Linn meaning Fairy Pool didn’t let its anglers down right up to the ‘final hour’ and worked its magic by producing excellent returns with the heaviest fish being caught by Peter Boyle, Monaghan with his beautiful 5lb 12oz wild trout.  Anglers respected the lake and the stage that its fish are now at (approaching spawning) and all fish were carefully returned to the water.
Anglers reported seeing a lot of movement of fish on Tuesday but the trout were difficult to catch and as was the case in previous weeks they appeared distracted and aggressive, churning the water up with little or no interest for the flies the anglers were trying to tempt them with.   A mixture of wet fly and dry fly fishing was used with a wide selection of flies being offered up – most popular were a variety of dabblers, stimulators and sedges.
21 catches were reported for the final 3 days of 2011.

Some of these catches were from:

  • Ned Clinton, Cavan – on Wednesday October 12th using a stimulator one trout at over 4 lbs.
  • Frank Kelly, Cavan – on October 12th, one trout at over 3 lbs.
  • Eamonn Ross, Cavan – on October 12th, one trout at 2.75 lbs.
  • Tommy Curran, Cavan – on October 12th, one trout at 1½ lbs.
  • Pat Gallagher, Duleek – two trout at 1½ and 2 lbs using a stimulator on Monday October 10th.
  • John Burke and Tommy Geogan, Trim – two trout at 2 ½ and 2 lbs fishing around Holywell and Arley using silver and claret dabblers.
  • Michael Kelly, Dublin – on  Wednesday three fish at 3, 2 ½ and 2 lbs all caught dry fly fishing, heaviest trout was caught using Michael’s LF fly.

The L.S.T.P.A will be running fly tying classes at Lough Sheelin starting in October for young anglers from 10 yrs upwards.  Anyone interested should contact Thomas Lynch at 087 9132033 (after 6pm).
On Thursday October 13th a stillness and ‘closed’ feeling seemed to have enveloped this lake, a few fishermen were loading up boats reassuring themselves that they only had a 4½ month wait until the fishing started again and ‘sure wasn’t one day of that gone already’.  I walked down to the lake in the late afternoon on that day, the temperature was at an unseasonable 17°C and curled up, spotted sycamore leaves chased across the concrete pier in front of me.   The water looked silver and the lake looked majestic and peaceful as if it knew that after the activity of the past 6½ months it can now have a well deserved rest and get on with other business.  Sheelin might look peaceful on the surface but below that the trout are on a mission and that mission is to head towards the lake’s eleven inflowing rivers, following their instincts to return to the rivers in which they themselves first began.
Sheelin’s fishing season reopens on March 1st 2012 and this lake will be ready and waiting for all of us again – deo volento.

Fishing on the Beara – shore angling report

Plaice
Chris and Mike from Worthing who after catching the almost obligatory 10 lb+ huss and conger went of to see if the winter species had arrived yet. Fishing with lug and crab as bait they found plenty with six plaice up to a fabulous specimen of 3lbs 9ozs and they feel they would have caught more were it not for the 20 odd codling in the 2 to 4 lb bracket who were eagerly grabbing their baits

A lot of action to report of late as summer slides away and autumn starts to appear.

Stewart and Terry Moore were on their first visit to the Beara and it did not disappoint as they caught pollack, conger, wrasse, huss and the biggest starfish I have ever seen!

Harry Mounsey and brother Mike from Cumbria just cannot stay away. They were here earlier in the year and returned to see if Harry could get amongst the big huss that late season can throw up. Conger to 10 lbs, pollack to 7 lbs and wrasse to 4 lbs were caught but it was almost the last cast of the holiday that Harry finally caught his double figure huss, a fine fish of 10 lbs 2 ozs.

Other first time visitors included Phil and Bob from Edingurgh and Steve and Arthur from Bangor. All found a good variety of fish with huss, pollack, conger, wrasse and doggies making up the bulk of the catches.

More first timers in the shape of Barry and Greg Diaper from Suffolk and every day seemed to bring reports of new Personal Bests with double figure conger and huss featuring strongly. One day they caught 15 huss to 10 lbs 8 ozs. For a full report on their trip and some excellent pictures check out http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606278

Although the weather should be getting colder it is unseasonably warm at the moment, although a little damp, not really raining , just damp.

This did not put off Chris and Mike from Worthing who after catching the almost obligatory 10 lb+ huss and conger went of to see if the winter species had arrived yet. Fishing with lug and crab as bait they found plenty with six plaice up to a fabulous specimen of 3lbs 9ozs and they feel they would have caught more were it not for the 20 odd codling in the 2 to 4 lb bracket who were eagerly grabbing their baits. Add to that a few flounder, dabs, huss and an estimated 30 lb conger lost at the net it was quite a day to remember. Next day on a different mark they once again found plenty of cod to 4lb+, several conger and pollack with fish approaching 8lbs.
