New personal best wild brown for Derry angler Chris Paris

Chris Paris caught this 7lb 8 oz brown from Lough Sheelin on Tuesday 7 May on one of his epoxy nymphs, beating his previous biggest wild brown of 7lb 4oz that he caught in 2017 from Lake Hawdon in the Canterbury High Plains, South Island New Zealand. Chris was being guided by Sean Maguire of Melvin Tackle, based in Garrison, Co. Fermanagh.

Not a sausage caught on Currane but a few eaten

Currane

Vincent Appleby, back again with his reports from the shore of Lough Currane…

2/5/2024. Quote of the day comes from a Currane angler and that’s not surprising, and I quote, “0”. And those are the facts of the day. Wind variable NE to NW, followed by good cloud cover and showers. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.1mm, amount of sunshine 4.4, maximum air temperature 13.6°C.

3/5/2024. There were five boats out today, all trying to stimulate my Noble Gentleman the Salmon, sadly their lines stayed slack, so on that negative note we  will head for a positive note on part two of the Mad Fishermen’s trip to Lough Currane, the stage is yours Mad Fisherman.

Now to the weather, Wind, light SW followed by reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 3.4mm, amount of sunshine 0.4, maximum air temperature 11.1°C.

4/5/2024. Straight to the quote of the day from a Currane angler and I quote, “No good just 2 boats out”. You could say it’s going to be a slack long weekend? That sums up today’s manipulations. Wind light WSW veered WNW late in the afternoon. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0, amount of sunshine 4.6, maximum air temperature 13.7°C.

5/5/2024. The Currane anglers were all quiet this Bank Holliday Sunday going by WhatsApple. Wind NNE light, followed by good cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0 mm, amount of sunshine 6.2, maximum air temperature 14.0°C.

6/5/2024. The Currane anglers were all quiet this bank holiday Monday or you could say that their lines were as slack as my mobile phone. NNE light and variable, followed by reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0, amount of sunshine 13.1, maximum air temperature 15.5°C.  I will finish today’s notes, on a great quote and it’s about a boat and some boat as you can see by the photo taken by Mr. Ger Egan, his quote is very appropriate, “My ship makes my castle look small”.

Lough Currane

7/5/2024. They say the fisherman’s story can be a good one, sadly the Currane fishermen had no stories or no comments this day, as you can see by the photos Lough Currane was calm and on the low side, so you can say the pictures tell the story. Wind SW variable and light. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.0 mm, amount of sunshine 4.2, maximum air temperature 15.3°C.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Super pike on fly for Angling Services Ireland

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland has welcomed regular guest Gerald to Roscommon this week. Gerald is no stranger to the area, having been visiting Bodo for many years. He is also no stranger to big fly caught pike, having landed plenty of those on his visits to Ireland in the past!

Gerald continued his good form this week, with another superb, hard fighting Irish pike on the fly – the smile says it all really! Well done Gerald.

Loads of fishing around Lanesborough, but not many anglers about

4lb tench on vintage tackle
4lb tench on vintage tackle

Paul Waghorne reports on his Lanesborough during which he caught over 350 fish for every UK angling tourist me saw…

My 19 day Irish trip has ended with a 6 Tench haul on Lough Duff. Proud to catch a 4lb’er on tackle that is almost 70 years old.

Key stats of Ireland 2024
  • Hours fished,- 107 over 37 short sessions
  • Total fish – 707 (1 every 9 minutes)
  • Roach – 580 (best weighed 1lb 2oz but loads around a pound)
  • Rudd – 59 – (12oz)
  • Tench – 42 – (4lb 10oz)
  • Perch – 9
  • Pike – 5 (13lb 8oz)
  • Hybrid – 8 (none off rivers)
  • Skimmers – 3
  • Brown Trout – 1

Aside from fishing, I counted 45 bird species. A huge amount of Cuckoos everywhere, but especially on the Suck system. More ‘Bullfiches’ than I’ve ever seen. A ‘Water Rail’ less than 10′ away and a ‘Hobby’ at Balinalack.

What is more alarming, I saw just one other visiting angler from the UK and he himself had a property he stays near Strokestown. To think just a few years back there were thousands of British anglers flocking to Ireland each spring.

I was ridiculed for suggesting a few years ago my theory regarding the demise of the Irish Roach/Bream Hybrid. On this trip, I had just 8 which were all caught on Loughs. The bio-mass has shifted to such an extent that the Roach appear to be totally dominating the river systems. Even the Perch seemed to have decreased in numbers?

As the Inny below Ballymahon was carrying so much extra water this year, I was unable to fish comfortably with a stick float, but fished Loughs to which I’ve not visited previously, hence the number of Tench.

Wicklow Boat Charters gets off the mark with Tope & Hounds

qrf

Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters has been relatively quiet of late, but he is starting to ramp things up now as his busiest time of the year is fast approaching. He had a group from Hanley Energy out last week, and while no monsters were caught, they did notch up the first smoothhound and tope to the boat for the season. We expect these species to be featuring heavily for Kit over the coming months, so watch this space!

Double hookup of big pike on Lough Ree

big pike

Damien Culliney of Anglers Paradise was out for a day’s pike fishing on Lough Ree recently with his friend Chris Barry.

The session got off to a slow start with the pike in a negative mood and not impressed with their lures. Sometimes a change in weather can make big difference. A brief shower of hailstones seemed to spur the pike into feeding. No sooner had the hail stopped, than the action began with Chris lifting into a powerful fish that stripped line. As the pike slid into the net and was lifted aboard, a second rod went, and they were in again. This time Damien played the fish to the net. Two fish on board at the same time – 102cms and 103cms.  Quite a brace. To ensure a quick release, only one fish was photographed. In the following 10 minutes another 3 fish were hooked (thankfully not at the same time!). It shows the importance of waiting for that feeding window to occur.  When it happens, action can be fast and furious.

Ardaire Springs Angling Fair 2024

Adaire Springs

I have been very much looking forward to this event, really since the 2023 show ended. The atmosphere, location and people involved gave it a real community feel. The demos and talks were fantastic, the exhibitor’s enthusiasm and passion for the sport really shone through, how lucky we are to be able to hear of their experiences and tap into their knowledge. The fly tiers were also fantastic and some of the patterns and work they were doing was just mind blowing.

The kids casting and fly tying was busy and it was great to see such a flurry of young anglers tying flies and casting at the kids’ zone. We can all agree its these young anglers that are the future of our sport. Gaia done a fantastic job with the kids and it was great to see them enjoying the teaching as much as the kids enjoyed catching the fish. AGAI – Ireland did a superb job tying the flies and I found myself several times watching Trevor and Arthur trying to pick up a few tips and tricks. Extremely gifted people that are an enormous part of getting the kids involved between tying and casting. Unfortunately Anthony wasn’t with me this year, he is in Poland fishing so I am looking forward to joining him next week.

Each morning I took a walk around the lake and just took it all in. The weather came through for us and it was glorious. I am lucky enough to be a part of the Cadence team so tried out some of the rod weights I normally wouldn’t use. It’s always great to see my fellow APGAI-Ireland members and have a talk about all things fishing. Throughout the day it was an absolute hive of activity and the time just seemed to shoot past.

I got to meet and cast with some fantastic people. The Cadence 10ft 5wt seemed to be the people’s choice which is my own favourite narrowly beating the 8ft 6in 3wt.The venue is superb, as well as being great for the kids it’s great for people to try rods and lines out. There is nothing like being able to go to the water before you buy a rod and get to test it with different lines, try some different casts and just see how it feels.

The show is growing year on year. Ned has really driven the show and brought it in a superb direction. Ned has a super strong team to that keep everything calm and balanced. Like the saying goes “all good things must come to an end”. Its always tough to say goodbye to your friends, given the nature of our job we only get to see most of them at the fairs. We do try to stop and talk but end up giving a quick smile and we are gone with a rod or fly-tying materials somewhere. I enjoy every minute of it, meeting new people and passing on some tips that were passed to me by legends of the casting world. I also get to pick up some tips along the way to.

So, until next year at the Spring Angling fair where i have no doubt it will grow and be even more popular. Thank you to everyone who came to see my demo and take the time to stop and say hello. It was great casting with you all and hearing about where you are on your angling journey.

Big thank you to Ned and team for the invite to give a demo, really enjoyed it,

See you all next year

Bright sun makes tough going for North Kildare anglers

A fine 40cm trout caught by Laurence Doherty

Like many of us, the North Kildare Trout & Salmon Association expected the forecasted dull/wet/breezy conditions to prevail for their angling competition on the Liffey last Sunday, and, like most of us… they were somewhat surprised by the bright, sunny, windless day that materialised. So, as some of us fired up the BBQs for the first time this year, 12 members of the NKTSAA headed to the riverbank to fish their Catch/Photo/Release, Mulvey/Delaney Competition.

This one was well over the 25cm mark

The bright conditions made the going tricky, and rising trout were few and far between, and those that were rising tended to be on the smaller side. Anglers found they had to switch up tactics to get their share of fish, but small black dries seemed to outperform most other flies. In the end, seven anglers had the quota of 4 fish (two over 23cm and two over 25cm), with a few over the 30cm mark and one great trout measuring 40cm.

A fine 40cm trout caught by Laurence Doherty

The top four anglers were:

1st) Laurence Doherty
2nd) James Johnson
3rd) Gary Revile
4th) Seamus O’ Neill
