Light lures for trout on river and lake

Senan Stanley was back after trout on Lough Derg and his local river, fishing ultra light lures. The rivers are starting to come back into good order following the recent never ending rain rain, and an entertain end of week session was enjoyed. The lake on Sunday was a different matter and the windy conditions saw the trip cut short, but not before a few trout were landed.

There’s two videos on the page so don’t forget to scroll down for the second one…

Bruce Pennell nets 18lb 4oz win at Rodger’s Island ahead of Portumna Festival

Portumna Coarse Angling Club fished a club match at the weekend, ahead of the Portumna Festival which kicks off on Sunday with an Open one day event before the 5 Day Festival starts on Monday.

The lads fished pegs 1 to 9 on Rodger’s Island. There were some really good weights returned from the river and Bruce Pennell took first place with 18lb 4oz.

Young anglers enjoy coaching session with NCFFI

Aspiring young anglers attended the first rounds of the NCFFI youth sessions last weekend. They fished over two days, with Day 1 at Ballyshunnock Reservoir and Day 2 at Oaklands, with Irish Bait and Tackle Limited sponsoring the all essential live bait.
The focus for these sessions was pole fishing, and the young anglers got to grips with the techniques on Ballyshunnock, where fishing for silvers was a little slow, and then blitzed it the following day at Oaklands, catching 230kg of carp. Judging by the smiles in the photos,  everyone had an enjoyable time. See the NCFFI Facebook page for full report and more photos.

If you are interested in becoming involved, the NCFFI is inviting young anglers, from novices to the competent, to join a series of sessions covering a range of float fishing techniques. What’s more, those aspiring to compete on the world stage will get to fish alongside those already on the international scene as we look to form a pool of anglers to progress to the championship level, looking ahead to fielding teams in all three age categories at the World Youth Angling Championships of 2025. Those not ready for the world stage will be invited to take part in the Celtic Cup in Scotland this October, where we will field mixed teams of variable ability to introduce young anglers to sport fishing competition to international rule.

The sessions will move around the island and are available at,
Gaulmoylestown Lake, 11th May
Ballyshunnock Reservoir, 8th June
Lough Scur Co. Leitrim, 20th July
Northern Ireland (Venue TBA) 10th August
Advance Registration only at https://www.ncffi.ie/youth-sessions/

Tulla Anglers spring cleaning at Silvergrove, Kevin cleans up at Clondorney

Silvergrove, Tulla

Anthony Weir tells us that it was a busy weekend for the Tulla & District Angling Club. Club members swapped their rods and reels for brushes and buckets to scrub angling stands and cat walks on one their local venues. There were 15 folks out cleaning on Silvergrove on Saturday. This was followed by 10 brave souls fishing Clondorney on Sunday.

We didn’t hear who made the podium on Saturday but Kevin took the spoils on Sunday with 12lbs.

Water Levels falling on the Blackwater, salmon reported

Blackwater salmon

Simone, along with his friend Marco, travelled from Italy to fish with Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery as part of a stag weekend wish list. Simone wanted to catch a salmon before his wedding day and guided by Jason Corcoran he saw his wish come true.

Blackwater salmon

What a nice first ever salmon to land it was, weighing in at 9.5lbs. A big well done to Simone and we all wish you the very best for your wedding day.

Prior to that special catch, on Friday the 12th of April an angler reported that he had 4 Salmon on the one day– all on the fly, and all released, from a  fishery between Ballyduff, Co. Waterford and Fermoy, Co. Cork.

Water levels having dropped since the last week’s floods and are continuing to drop off and water clarity is improving. It sounds like there are a few fish in the system and as river levels continue to fine out angling will almost certainly improve.

Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Alan Larkin wins O’Callaghans Feeder Festival with 46.920kg

Festivals are a huge feature of the coarse fishing calendar on Inniscarra and the weekend’s festivities kicked off with the Feeder Open on April 13th. The Open was fished on Section A, Garden Centre, Section B, Ballytrasna and Section C, Fountainstown. The best of the fishing was on sections A and B and JP Molloy took the win with 14.800kg.

O’Callaghan’s Feeder Festival

After the warm up act of the Open came the main event – The O’Callaghan’s Feeder Festival. Sections A and B fished best again and the leaders going in to Day 2 were Andy Butterfield, Paul Leese and Alan Larkin. Weights were up from the open, the top weight coming in at 20.230kg.

Day 2 saw the top 3 reshuffled and all the anglers in the top 7 or 8 must have felt there was a chance they’d take the win, especially those going on to fish in Section A and B. As it turned out, Section C suddenly turned on and the top 3 anglers all turned up good nets of fish on that section. Well done to Alan Larkin who totalled 46.920kg to win First Place.

Dave Bacon Open

The Dave Bacon Open rounded out the week of fishing and Section A and B performed better once more, particularly B. The results of the Open, sponsored by Jackie Lennox Take Away, saw Kevin Norcliffe take a good win on 16.080kg.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Flounders, coleys and dogfish for Killybegs Mariners at Rossnowlagh league outing

Another Mariners league  outing took place last Friday evening April 12th on the Manor house beach near Rossnowlagh. Read their report below…

With just three league outings left to fish we got back with a great turnout of 22 anglers enjoying a beautiful sunset and a good surf raising hopes of a good fishing after the big blow of last week.

Alas some were hampered by weed all across the beach making life difficult but there were fish there and some lovely flounders of 34, 35, 36 and 37cm being the longest.

Cormac with a small flounder before getting longest flat of 36cm later on

Longest flattie prize of €64 was won by Cormac Burke with a flounder of 36cm.

2nd overall winning €64 with 154pts was Pat Cunningham. Pat also won the lucky peg draw out of the hat for €44.

And 1st overall winning €128 with 194pts catching 4 flounder and a coley for two outing wins in a row well done to Daragh McGuinness.

Dessie was off the mark early with a few flounders

Species caught were flounders, coleys and dogs.

This leaves things very close with two outings left to fish with just 16 points separating the top 5 anglers and 8 points between the top 3.

We are hoping to fish Mullaghmore Beach near side next Friday eve with more details to follow.

Trout anglers on Lough Arrow back in action!

Lough Arrow Anglers report…

The season on Lough Arrow got off to a slow start mainly due to the bad weather.   The high water level and strong winds deterred many anglers from visiting the lake.  However, improved weather is promised, and the cuckoo was heard this morning by an early-morning walker – better days are ahead!

Our talk with Tom Doc Sullivan was a great success.  There were over 30 anglers in attendance.   Firstly, Tom talked us through the sequence of the fly hatch on the lake:

Duck fly, Olives, Mayfly, Caenis, Sedges, Green Peter, Daphnia and last but not least, the Daddy Longlegs.  Next, he discussed the various fly patterns and methods that he would use to catch trout during the different hatches.  It was altogether a very informative presentation.  Our thanks to McDermotts Castlebaldwin for hosting the event.

Great interest in Tom Doc Sullivan’s talk

We held our first competition on Sunday 14th April.  Thirty-nine anglers took part in windy, blustery and cold conditions.  This is the first time we used our new measuring boards and score cards to record the catch.  These are now necessary for the Catch and Release system which has been adopted for our competitions.

Over in The Mayfly that evening, the cards were  quickly checked and verified.  The clear winner was Eddie Harte with a magnificent bag of 5 trout.  Well done Eddie!

Results were as follows:

1  EDDIE HARTE – 5 fish

2  GERRY MARTIN – 2 fish

3  JONNY TONER – 2 fish

4  MARK DEAVIN – 2 fish

5  COLIN DODD – 2 fish

The Mayfly Cup being presented to first prize winner Eddie Harte by Philip Craig of the Mayfly Inn
2nd prizewinner Gerry Martin with Club Chairman Paul Colreavy and Club Secretary Colin Dodd

It was great to see old friends for a catch-up and chat at the start of a much anticipated season.

Thanks also to Philip and Ellie for hosting the event.

Tight lines and bent rods!
