Men’s Team In Action At World Shore Championships

The Irish senior men’s team are in action this week at the World Shore Angling Championship, held in Sicily. Today is the third competition day, and things are going well for the Irish team, who lie in second place at the halfway stage, with today and tomorrow’s competitions set to decide the medals. Over 100 of the world’s top shore anglers are competing, with 21 countries represented. Ireland has an excellent record at the championships, but they are facing stiff competition from teams much more familiar with the conditions and fishing in the Mediterranean.

The team consists of Mike Curtin (Galway Bay) David Farrelly (South Shore), Darren Ryan (Asst.Manager), Timmy O’Sullivan (Galway Bay), JP Molloy (West Cork & District), Sean Carley (Menapia),  Joe Carley (Manager) and Des Farrelly (Southshore).  The team is managed by Joe Carley, assisted by Darren Ryan and preparation was mentored by John O’Brien.

Competition

Opening day was tough fishing, with lots of undersize fish for the team, however JP Molloy finished 12th overall, and the other members of the team all scored reasonably well to leave them lying in 7th.

Day 2 saw a faqntastic performance from Des Farrelly, finishing in second place, and the team took third on the day, moving them up to second overall, behind leaders Portugal.

With two days to go, we wish Team Ireland best of luck, and we’ll be reporting on their results next week. Win or lose, at least they’re enjoying better weather than we are!

Senan shares his simple setup for lake pike

Regular YouTuber Senan Stanley fishes for lots of different species, but like a lot of anglers, this time of year he turns his attention to pike fishing. Senan is pretty handy when it comes to pike fishing, regularly landing 100cm+ fish and so he has plenty of knowledge to share on the subject. Anyone who is interested in learning how to kit a boat out for lake pike fishing would do well to check out his latest YouTube post where he goes through his basic setup, including electronics, rods, reels, and lures. And, of course, he manages to catch a few pike to show us just how it’s done…

Floods bring change of venue for VDE Baggers club match

The VDE Baggers were faced with a choice last week when high water at their usual venue at Newry promised to make the fourth round of their winter league a struggle. So they decided to take the plunge and move to the Movanagher Canal, where the sight of plenty of fish topping on the morning of the match whetted their appetite for the competition ahead.

Aaron with his winning 8.8kg

Unfortunately, the topping roach were a bit of a red herring, as all the surface activity failed to translate into feeding fish. Weights were down on pre-match expectations, but Aaron Nabc Hutchman, who drew a handy peg, made the most of his opportunity to bag 8.8kg and win the match comfortably. In second place, with 3.5kg was John Walker, while James Wellwood performed well to finish third with 2.54kg from an unfancied peg.

Pike fishing and catch a trout? Just safely release it

releasing a trout

Karoly Gyorfi was pike fishing on Sunday when the rod almost buckled with a huge hit. The fish was firmly hooked and gave the angler a good account of itself. As the fish was brought to the side of the boat for landing it was suddenly clear that this was not a pike. The (un)lucky angler had caught himself a huge trout on a big trout shaped soft plastic.

This happens to pike anglers every so often in their angling careers and Karoly did what is recommended, quickly and safely released the trout. He had one other fish on the day, the intended quarry, a pike. The fish took a large jerk bait. It was measured at 85cm and safely released.

If you are ever fishing and catch a fish that is out of season, or for which you don’t have a licence, it’s not a problem – just quickly and safely release your catch.

Flooded Barrow and cold rain didn’t dampen fishing for Athy winter league

athy winter league 2 winners

The Athy & District Anglers Winter League opened with a bang in the idyllic Marina club grounds in early October. On a day that saw many anglers get too much sun, it was perch that helped Ollie to his win despite a good net of tench for challenger Ryan. Ryan takes up the story with a report on the second match of their 2023/25 winter league…

On Sunday, October 29th, 2023, the Athy & District Anglers Club’s Winter League was back at the Marina club grounds. It was a chilly morning, and as the gang gathered at 08:30, we were pumped up for a day of angling fun. However, only 12 out of 14 participants showed up – Pat and Hugh decided to take a rain check, leaving a couple of empty pegs.

Before we got down to business, there was a buzz in the air as we drew for some cool spot prizes sponsored by Murph’s of Carlow. Barry, Keith, and Ryan struck it lucky, bagging those goodies, and we couldn’t thank Murph’s enough for their support. Our match prizes were also sponsored by the good folks at Murph’s of Carlow, so thanks a million to the folks at Murph’s! We all greatly appreciate it.

The weather gave us all a real rough wet start – cold, gloomy, and threatening to rain on our parade. The water levels at the Marina club grounds were high, thanks to the River Barrow being in flood. Some pegs were almost underwater – a real test for us anglers. But hey, that’s the name of the game, right?

At 10:00 am, Des gave the all-in call, and it was game on. Ryan, Ollie, and Mick kicked things off with a bang as the roach were biting like crazy in the flooded river. Those Barrow roach sure are a joy to have on the feed, and it was a blast for those guys, while the rest of the group had a bit of a slower start.

The morning was pretty much a washout with rain pouring down for the first three hours of the match. But, we’re a stubborn bunch, and we weren’t about to let a little rain dampen our spirits. We soldiered on, hoping for a break in the weather.

In the afternoon, the weather eased up and gave us a break from the downpour. The bites eased up for Mick and Ryan, and it became a game of balancing feeding & tactics to get any fish on the hook. On the flip side, bites started to pick up down the line of pegs putting everyone in the running for weigh ins!

As the clock struck 3:00 pm, the all-out call marked the end of the match. We packed up our gear and gathered around for the weigh-ins, the moment of truth.

Overall, it was a day of great catches, and we pulled in over 50lbs of fish. Ollie took the top spot with a whopping 9lb 14ozs, closely followed by Ryan in second place with 7lb 4ozs.

Now, here’s a kicker – third place was a tie! Barry and Tommy both weighed in at 5lb 12ozs, showing that this match was seriously competitive. Fifth place went to Jimmy with a solid 4lb 7ozs.

The Winter League’s Match 2 of 2023 was a wet one, but the fish were on and a great day was had by all!

Go fishing

Our next League Match is coming up on the 19th of November and we can’t wait!

In preparation we’ll be cleaning the River on Sunday the 12th of November, so head over to our Facebook page for details and come help out if you can!

John O’Brien sent us this super photo of his son Ben O’Brien (8 years old) from Newtownforbes, Co Longford who hooked and landed a whopper of a pike on his first cast on the Rinn River over the weekend.

This lovely fish was safely landed and released carefully back into her territory. Unfortunately John and Ben had no measuring device to hand but they reckoned she was in the 13/14lbs range. What a pike to start your day with.

Ben was using his new Abu Vigilante rod and with a one hook rubber jig, it doesn’t get much lighter!

Great day’s fishing for apprentice piker

This report in from Dan O’Neill of South East Casting:

With rain forecast and our local haunts already high it was looking like we would be fishing some lakes over the last week. Anthony was very geared up for our trip with Ronan Murray of Irish Pike Fishing Guides. I booked a trip with Ronan about a month ago, I decided to keep it quiet around the apprentice to avoid everyday questions of “how long left now before our trip?”. As the time came near, I felt as though the weather may be a problem for us. It brought back memories of me when I was Anthony’s age. I would be looking out of the sitting room window at bending trees and sideways rainfall saying “it’s not that bad dad, its clearing”, I now feel his pain (sorry Dad).

After a phone call from Ronan a day or two beforehand, I finally told Anthony about the trip and he immediately started asking questions, spending the whole evening reading about pike fishing and looking up tips and tricks; little did he know that the man we were going with has an encyclopedic knowledge of pike fishing tips and tricks.

The drive to where we met Ronan was about 2 hours which added some quality time for me with Anthony as we spoke about fishing (surprise, surprise). I ended up agreeing to several more fishing trips on the way up, no matter how much I turned up the radio to drown out the requests they just kept coming, even a cheeky McDonalds breakfast on the way didn’t stop them!

Arriving at the meeting point it was breathtaking. I love large loughs and no matter what picture you paint in your head of the lough on the way there, the reality always betters it with beauty, it also stamps an image in your mind that you will never forget. As I looked across the lough with my own eyes and not through the screen of the phone or camera, I felt connected to something. Irish Loughs are very special, almost magical, and I think each one connects with you in a different way.

As Ronan arrived, Anthony’s eyes were firmly on the boat, a superb vessel and our platform for the day. After we got our safety briefing, we boarded the boat. Led by Ronan, we went out onto the Lough. We decided to throw lures for a while and had plenty of perch. Anthony had a nice pike of about 7 pounds on the perch gear which made it very exciting for him. We moved around a little more looking for perch, as Anthony had a newfound love jigging for them, and we all caught some nice perch while fishing this method.

After a lovely bowl of soup and a warm ham and cheese roll (compliments of Ronan) it was off to try for something a little bigger. Putting away the lighter rods and getting out the heavier rods and larger lures it was out into the lough again, the wind picked up a little and rain began to start but we are not made of sugar, so we battled on. Surprisingly, it wasn’t long before the rod bent around and we had what was a much better fish.

We hit double figures with this one (or should I say Anthony did – as I was paying more attention to the surrounding area when it hit). Many more pike followed and they were all magnificent and in such great condition. Anthony had the biggest one of the day and he caught it in injury time also just as we were packing up, this made the drive home, let’s say – interesting! Bragging rights can be hard to bear for 2.5hrs. but a part of me (well mostly all of me) was delighted for this young angler – and very proud.

Just to say a big thank you to Ronan from Irish pike fishing guides. He was superb with Anthony and engaged with him through the entire trip, it’s great that in Ireland we have guides and anglers like Ronan that truly has a passion for his sport and supports the next generation.
