Great mixed fishing on the reefs for the Clare Dragoon

The beautiful weather of last week certainly provided a welcome break to charter boat anglers, and guests on the Clare Dragoon definitely enjoyed their trips. Skipper Luke even cooked some of the plentiful mackerel on board for his lucky clients. Looks delicious!

“At last the mackerel seem to have returned in some numbers and fishing by the coast is giving a lovely mix of good Pollack and Mackerel.

Out on the reefs the fishing is more mixed with plenty Pollack and coalfish and some Cod and Whiting with other mixed species. The Spurdog’s can be of plague level but fishing plastic can cut the catch rate down. On the other had using a small bit of wire can turn up Spurdog’s well into double figures.”

Tip Top Tope Time in Galway Bay

Skipper John Fleming loves shark fishing, and tope are one of the most obliging shark species he can put guests over. He reports on a day out last week targeting tope.

Cracking day at sea with the Hogans, Frank and Kieran and friends, we started off the day in search of mackerel, then got the anchor down for a tope session.
The tope did not disappoint with all the lads having at least one fish each with Mick having the best fish of the day.
We decided to then hit an inshore reef on the way home and got some nice pollock, wrasse, pouting and a couple of cod.

A regular day is between 9am- 6pm from either Rossaveal, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

More cod!

Skipper Sean Maguire has had a few groups out over the past week or two, many enjoying the fine weather last week and catching plenty of fish. A groupd of friends came out for a “lazy shark drift” on a beautiful sunny day, and caught a lot more besides. There seem to be plenty of cod going by the photos, and the spurdogs are still around too.

Sea trout feeding well in Moy Estuary

Steve Schreck reports from the Moy Estuary:

Good sport for seatrout was had on the Moy Estuary by Philip Thornton and Paul Kelly last week.  The two anglers fished on Saturday 9th September, using a variety of methods, hooking about 45 sea trout and catching and releasing twelve fish measuring above the minimum size. One seatrout was kept, weighing around 1.75lbs.

Moy Catchment Angling Report – W/E 10/09/23

Steve Schreck reports from the Moy:

The water in the Moy catchment settled to low water levels last week, with readings at Ballylahan bridge showing 0.54 on Monday and 0.36 on Sunday. Not too many anglers ventured out to tempt their luck. In total, 66 salmon have been reported caught for the week.

The Moy Fishery recorded two nice seatrout weighing around 2lbs and 3lbs caught by a local angler at the Point Beat.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 11 salmon caught for the week, weighing between 3lbs and 6lbs.

Mount Falcon recorded 3 fish, 2 of which were caught on the prawn and released. The best fish weighed 5lbs.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers reported 4 salmon caught on the prawn.

Attymass Angling Club recorded 2 fish for the week caught on the prawn.

Coolcronan Fishery reported 1 salmon of 5lbs caught on the prawn.

Byrne’s Fishery recorded 14 grilse for the week caught on the prawn. A good number of those salmon were reported as being fresh, silver fish.

Gannon’s Fishery reported 4 salmon. Two were caught on bubble and fly and two on the fly.

The Foxford Fishery recorded 6 fish caught on prawn. The best fish weighed 7lbs.

Foxford Salmon Anglers reported 19 salmon for the week, of which 12 were caught at Rinnaney and 7 at Baker’s.

East Mayo Anglers reported 2 salmon of 3lbs for the week, of which one was released.  Both were caught on the fly.

Loughs Conn and Cullin fishing well but angling activity low

The picture on the lakes remains the same. Anglers who venture out catch fish, but overall angling activity is low.

Gerry Murphy Boat-Hire reports from his base that  Cathal Tyrell from Edenderry brought a group of friends and family to fish Lough Conn. The group of 24 had an enjoyable day, catching good trout up to 14 inches among many smaller ones, using several methods, namely fly fishing, trolling and spinning.

Peter Roche had a fantastic day fishing Victoria Bay on Thursday 7th September, catching 4 fish between 1.25lbs and 1.75lbs on Dry Sedge patterns.

Chris Meadows from the UK fished Massbrook Point on Sunday, catching three trout to the measure, all on wet flies.

Limerick County Pike Anglers all at sea

Members of the Limerick and County Pike Anglers Club took a break from the pike fishing recently to target something different – saltwater species – and different saltwater species is just what they got.

They had a great day where everyone managed to get in on the act, with spur dogs, cod, ling, pollock, mackerel, wrasse and even the rare megrim coming on board.

Weather started off cloudy but turned into a lovely sunny day with clear skies. There were lots of spurs about and good fish that they were reeling in were being attacked on the way up.

The dreaded end of season looms around the corner. Walking across the field towards the king’s river in sleet in March seems many many moons ago when it was only back in March. In March I tend to find myself awaiting the warmer months and in September I’m wishing to be back in March again, never happy. This season, like most, I got to meet plenty of clients that are now angling acquaintances. Learning their methods of trout fishing and trying them on the river while they try my methods. Swapping of angling knowledge is something that I truly enjoy. I have been handed everything from a bright orange grasshopper to a size 24 work of art, both caught trout.

Over the last couple of weeks we have had plenty of trout with quite a few nice sized fish. I like to keep things simple when fishing, I keep a log of what is working in relation to patterns and try to base my boxes on that. Sedge patterns are working well at the moment along the river with some great fun just before the heavy darkness sets in. Dark wets and spider patterns are working well from 2.45pm – 3pm until 5.30pm – 6pm in recent days I find. The water temperature is peaking at 15 – 15.5 degrees. The water level is at .33 which is a nice height, and all the runs and glides are fishable at that height. The days can be bright, so I use a longer leader when fishing my chosen discipline.

Some grilse were caught over the past couple of weeks also, a couple of nice salmon between 12-14 pounds were also caught on the Manor house pool which left the anglers with some fond memories to reminisce on over the close season.

My latest trip was with a good friend of mine, we were learning the circle c cast just under the main house listening to a sika stag calling, wood pigeons cooing and the river as it deflected off our waders. The noise of the reel disturbing us from time to time was welcome with the sight of a brown trout leaping from the fast current even more welcome. A lovely trip and very memorable one.

River Nore trout fishing

No bluefin bonanzas, but fishing steady when conditions allow

Adrian Molloy of Tuna.ie reports that the tuna are still keeping him ticking over when weather allows. Over the weekend, there were three nice fish for Martin, Kate and Rory, measuring up at 240cm 207cm and 220cm. The three fish, with estimated weights of 500lbs, 350lbs and 400lbs, were tagged and released under the Tuna CHART tagging programme. The next six weeks should see the fishing really pick up, provided that we can avoid stormy weather.
