Finally some salmon and sea trout action on Currane and Inny

Lough Currane on Monday
Lough Currane, September 2020

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

13/9/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments today, so on that note we head down Murphy’s weather road, on the weather front Kerry was on a yellow rain warning. Wind SSW fresh to strong followed by gusts up to 63 Km/h and overcast followed by rain at times.  Amount rain forecasted is 41mm?

14/9/2023 The Currane anglers are still waiting for the flood that never was as of yet, on the manipulations of the Currane anglers this day all I can say is again my WhatsApple was all quiet on the fly line as well as the Currane trolling lines. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 12.5 mm. Wind light NE and variable from ENE to the NW

15/9/2023 At least one salmon caught on the troll, one boat had 4 juniors on the drift. Good few brownies to reported on the drift. 1 salmon caught on the Inny on fly and one on spin.  Amount of rainfall yesterday was 8.3mm. Wind light NE veered NNE followed by rain this morning.

16/9/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet. On the Inny front one could see the gravel quiet clearly at the Inny Bridge, need I say more. Wind NE fresh to strong followed by good cloud cover.

17/9/2023 The Hampshire Hogs are back, and I can say without of any contradiction they started in style in the C&R department. Hampshire Hog Mr. Perter Ruffle caught and released two Grilse. Fellow Hampshire Hog Mr. Nigel Henshaw sadly lost a good fish. On that note we head down stream to the famous Butler Pool where Hampshire www.watervillegolflinks.ie  Hog Mr. Trevor Dewberry reported that it was all quiet and the same goes for the rest of the Waterville Fishery. Just for the record the Hampshire Hogs are fishing out  www.thecrescentwaterville.ie and fishing with watervilleboats@mail.com and www.fishingwithdom.com. I will finish tonight’s report with the Mad Fisherman and his YouTube channel, all I can say is to the Mad Fisherman, keep up the great work of promoting the Waterville fishery. Wind NNE light and variable followed by good cloud cover.

18/9/2023 Straight to the Hampshire Hogs report on today’s manipulations and I quote,

…just a couple of C&R Trout today, the best was in the 2lb class. With any luck there is a strong wind forecasted late this evening and yellow rain warning it might liven the Salmon.

Well there’s no argument to that. Wind NW and veered WNW followed by good cloud cover.

19/9/23 The Currane Hampshire Hogs take all the headlines on a wild Lough Currane today, here is their report on today’s action,

Hi Vincent,
it certainly was! Gave up about 2.30, a 4lb grilse C&R and a 2lb trout for Currane angler Mr. Trevor Dewberry, Mr. Nigel Henshaw, Mr. Pete Ruffle went on the river but nothing to show for it.
Cheers.

WSW 41 KM/h and gusts up to 67km/h followed by rain. Just for the record the Hampshire Hogs are staying at www.thecrescentwaterville.ie  and fishing out of and with watervilleboats@gmail.com  and www.fishingwithdom.com

20/09/2023 7 C&R salmon caught Inny 5 on fly , good few juniors C&R on the lake.

Again it’s the Hampshire Hogs that takes all the Salmon and Sea Trout headlines so it’s over to Currane angler Mr. Trevor Dewberry for today’s action,

Hi Vincent,
a 6lb C&R grilse for me and a 4lb C&R grilse for Peter, plus 4 sea trout between us.
Cheers,
Trevor.

As you would say Vince, Just for the record all today’s C&R were all caught on the troll, there was no fly fishing today because the lake was very dirty after last night’s 22.5 mm rain. Staying with the rainfall you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know the C&R Inny had a few anglers manipulating their skills and as of yet my WhatsApple was all quiet but watch this post. Wind West fresh followed by good cloud cover and the odd shower. Hampshire Hogs are staying at www.thecrescentwaterville.ie  and fishing out of and with watervilleboats@gmail.com  and www.fishingwithdom.com

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Leinster Pike Anglers kick of their winter league with a couple of good doubles

The Leinster Pike Anglers have had to wait a while to get their winter league going as they had to cancel a couple of recent events due to warm weather. But they finally got things off the mark last week as they headed to a river venue to kick their season off. And it got off to a flying start, with plenty of fish coming to the net including a couple of fine fish weighing just over 17lb. Anto Lennon thought he had the biggest fish points swen up with his pike of 17.11lb, but was pipped to the post by a matter of grammes as Jan Rutowski brought in a fish of 17.14lb. So it was a great start to their league, and we hope to hear plenty more from them over the coming months.

Results as follows:
1st….James Byrne 11 fish 49lb 8oz
2nd….Anthony Lennon 9 fish 43lb 10oz
3rd….Rodney Gaynor 11 fish 42lb 8oz
Pools pairs
1st….James Byrne & Anthony Lennon 20 fish 93lb 2oz
2nd….Rodney Gaynor & Fran Crosbie 21 fish 71lb 15 oz
Heaviest Fish
Jan Rutkowski……17lb 14oz

NCFFI All-Ireland Inter-Provincial Championship – Connacht champs!

Connacht are the 2023 champions!

After the two days fishing the Grand Canal at Daingean competing for the title of All-Ireland Inter-Provincial Champions, the Connacht squad finished with 47 points overall to take the title from 2022 champions Ulster, who finished in second place. In third place were Munster with Leinster finishing fourth.

Well done to the ten man teams who travelled from across the provinces to participate in this years championships and to Leinster coarse fishing federation for hosting.

If you want to be part of the 2024 championship check contact your council. Leinster and Munster have already published their qualifying events taking place over the winter months.

Better bass fishing over new moon tides

Cormac Walsh of the Lure Fishing Podcast has had the best week of his bass fishing year so far. Cormac thinks that the perfect new moon tide, not too big or not too small, which coincided with some high tides into darkness, switched it on big time.

He fished the early morning tides last week too, and they produced some fish on metals at distance, but as soon as high tide crept into darkness, the fish really came on the feed.

In the darkness, it was deadly shallow divers with a slow retrieve – just letting the lure do the work – that accounted for most of the fish, with some decent bass in the mix too.

The foul weather has unsettled things for now, but Cormac can’t complain after that week. Roll on the next set of tides.

Irish Angling Update 🎣 15 September 2023

The Indian summer is a distant memory and we are back to Orange and Yellow rainfall weather warnings for the southern half of the country up until 6pm on Friday, with small boat warnings for the whole weekend. Southern rivers can expect water gauges to rise to levels not seen since the middle of August and temperatures to drop a degree or two – maybe even bringing on some better fishing for our inland fisheries once the floods subside.

We start with our pike anglers this week, and pikers from the midlands and further afield had their biggest event of the year with the Lough Ree King of the Lake competition. Over 80 boats took to the water there in search of the lough’s big, green fish-guzzlers. Also after pike was well known sea fishing guide, David Norman, who travelled north to hook up with Pike on the Fly Guide and test their skills catching northern pike – on the fly. Lough Derg has also produced the goods for anglers targeting predatory fish, but this time both trout and pike were the species in the crosshairs of trolled lures (and trolled lures were in the crosshairs of one highly predatory, but tiny, trout).

Last week, the Belturbet September Festival fished through all seasons of weather until it came to lines in on Friday. There some good weights from the chosen venues and the early runaway leader became a runaway winner. The fine weekend weather that followed had Edenderry Coarse Anglers donning the hats and sun cream for their final club match of the year, where good canal tench helped to tip the scales further. On Oaklands lake in Wexford, teams of four nationalities battled it out for international honours in a friendly match there; Team Ireland prevailed for the fifth year running. In Monaghan, the Feedermasters’ Final 2023 was held on Lough Muckno, where the top four places were sewn up by the CM Lakelands club members – they seem to know a thing or two about fishing on this great lake. If you want to get involved in a match before September is out, the Belmont Fishing Club are looking for anglers to sign up for the Belmont Open, due to take place on September 24th.

Trout anglers on Lough O’Flynn fished the Maloney/Keady Cup last weekend; fishing was downright tough in the bright sun, but perseverance paid off and good fish were caught. On loughs Conn and Cullin, the fishing was pretty good for the anglers who ventured out, but there were few enough of those. Ceri Jones visited Lough Arrow towards the end of August where he shared a boat with local club secretary Colin Dodd, landing a couple each but rising many more.

On the rivers, fishing was just as tricky for the North Kildare Trout and Salmon Anglers, but in between thunder showers and sunny spells they managed to fish their delayed August competition to a finish. On the River Nore, spiders and sedges tempted late season trout and the odd grilse at Mount Juliet, leaving visiting anglers with very fond memories, while Piscari-Fly have issued their latest newsletter, offering sound advice on fishing the Nore catchment.

Following on from International Women’s Fly Fishing Day, which was held last weekend, there is an exciting opportunity for women interested in learning about fly fishing to attend an open day, hosted by the Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association, which will be happening at Laois Angling Centre on Saturday 23rd September. No experience is necessary, but booking is essential.

On the salmon fishing front, things were quiet again in Waterville last week as the temperatures increased and the winds fell away. On the Moy, a steady trickle of fish were caught throughout the week, despite low water; the best of the salmon fishing was in the Foxford area. All the way downstream to the tide, the Moy Estuary fished very well for sea trout to a variety of methods. We have reports of salmon waiting to run from estuaries and lower reaches of rivers, like on the Owenmore in Kerry, and the rain and drop in temperatures from the last couple of days might just be enough to get them going and give salmon anglers one last chance to land a fish before the season is out.

Salmon released into water

On the subject of rain and late season fishing, salmon anglers in looking for somewhere to fish in Donegal can buy permits online for the Clady, Crolly, Eany, River Eske and Lough Eske, Gweebarra, Owenea, Owencarrow and the dramatic fishery at Lough Beagh. Those thinking about the Moy can get permits for Ballyvary and Cloongee. In Galway, angling is available on the Clare River at the Claregalway Castle Fishery. Lastly, in Kerry there is fishing available on the Laune and Kerry Blackwater.

Out of the estuaries and into the oceans where our sea anglers have been enjoying great action around our coasts. Bluefin tuna are still ticking over in Donegal Bay, although mixed weather has hampered angling effort there.  In Cork, blue shark and porbeagle have been plentiful for the Courtmac and West Cork charter boats. Off the east coast, Wicklow has been fishing really well for smoothies and tope, with some good fish up to specimen size. In Clare, the Limerick County Pike Anglers were all at sea as they tackled fish of all shapes and sizes and both the Clare Dragoon and the Lady Gwen have had decent numbers of mackerel, nice cod and plentiful pollock. On the other side of the bay, the Brazen Hussy II has been in amongst the tope and reef fish leaving crews happy with their catches.

From our shores, the Menapia SAC in the south east had a smoothie bonanza as anglers fishing their club event landed 65 smooth hounds over the course of an evening’s fishing – winning our Catch of the Week in the process – while also in Wexford, Cormac Walsh has been eking out the bass in slack tides. From the Donegal shore, the Killybegs Mariners SAC had a great turnout as 29 club members fished their first league outing – they report that Donegal Bay is alive with fish (and whales) at the moment – including the odd rod caught trigger fish!

For interested shore anglers, the All Ireland Open Shore (Jimmy Smith) competition is being hosted by Ulster this year, along with the Ladies and Junior All Ireland competitions. Fishing is on Benone Strand, Co. Derry on Saturday, 30th September, with teams of 4.

Salmon Angling Logbook Returns

Inland Fisheries Ireland is encouraging salmon and sea trout anglers to return angling logbooks (setting out their fishing and catch record) and any unused gill tags from 2023 if they have ceased fishing for this year or once the season has closed. These returns provide vital information regarding the status and management of our wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout stocks into the future.

And now the weather…

Throughout Friday, rain will persist through much of the east, midlands and south causing localised flooding, holding drier in the far west and northwest. Rain will ease overnight. Highs 12°C – 15°C with light to moderate northeast breezes, lows 7°C – 10°C.

Saturday will be drier with some sunshine in the northwest, duller in the east and southeast with lingering rain. Highs of 15°C – 17°C, with freshening northeasterly breezes. Cloudier overnight, with more persistent rain arriving in the south by morning. Lows of 8°C – 12°C with light to moderate northeasterly breezes.

Sunday will see widespread rain, most persistent over the eastern half of the country. Highs of 15°C – 17°C in light to moderate easterly breezes.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland. If fishing in the sea, don’t forget to check the tides.

Great mixed fishing on the reefs for the Clare Dragoon

Cod

The beautiful weather of last week certainly provided a welcome break to charter boat anglers, and guests on the Clare Dragoon definitely enjoyed their trips. Skipper Luke even cooked some of the plentiful mackerel on board for his lucky clients. Looks delicious!

5 star service on the Clare Dragoon!

Luke says:

“At last the mackerel seem to have returned in some numbers and fishing by the coast is giving a lovely mix of good Pollack and Mackerel.

Out on the reefs the fishing is more mixed with plenty Pollack and coalfish and some Cod and Whiting with other mixed species. The Spurdog’s can be of plague level but fishing plastic can cut the catch rate down. On the other had using a small bit of wire can turn up Spurdog’s well into double figures.”
