Ulster wins Inter Pro at Mullagmore, John Dennehy wins Findlater Competition

2023 Findlater & Inter-Pros Awards

Pat & Mark Shortt, National Boat Recorders, report on the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers Findlater and Inter-Provincial Competition fished at Mullaghmore – May 20th & 21st 2023…

Inter-Provincial

Two competitions took place this weekend.  The Inter-Provincial saw the 4 Provincial Teams competing on Saturday, and the 2023 Findlater Competition had 28 anglers competing over the Saturday and Sunday.  Weather conditions were very promising with calm seas and only light rain on the Saturday.  The baits were 60 rag per angler and mackerel.

On Saturday 4 boats headed out and the first 3 hours was on the drift.  Fish were coming in steadily with Pollock, Ballan and Cuckoo Wrasse being the main species.  Mackerel showed up in numbers and at times were hard to get through.  The 2nd three hours were on anchor, and while this started off well, the fishing got tougher with way fewer fish being caught.

2023 Inter-Provincial Winners – Ulster

At the end of the day, having counted up the scores, Ulster were the champions beating Munster by 7.69%, Leinster were 3rd and Connaught 4th.  The scores were Ulster 337.58%, Munster 329.89%, Leinster 294.36% and Connaught 229.14%.  Many congrats to David McCormick, Uel Moore, Mark Devir, Aidy Herrity and Marc O’Connor.

Findlater Competition

In the Findlater Competition there were 4 people with boat wins and 100% each.  The fish scores determined the 1st to 4th positions, so after day 1, lying 1st for John Dennehy, 2nd Stephen Hurley, 3rd Piotrek Nowakowski and 4th Mark Devir.

Tails were up for day 2 with all to play for.  There was a good swell on the sea, and the skippers decided to anchor for the first 3 hours and drift for the last 3.  The fishing from the first drop was nice and steady and all enjoyed the fishing.

As the boats returned, all were trying to figure out who the top 6 were.  With only one angler having 2 boat wins, Piotrek Nowakowski was the overall winner with 200%.  Many congrats Piotrek, who will captain the Home Nations Team to represent Ireland in Weymouth in 2024.  The other team members are Stephen Hurley with 198.2%, Mark Devir with 195.13%, Padraic Clear with 190.36%, Sean Og McShane with 193.94% and John Dennehy with 180.60%.  A very strong team.

Low water tests trout anglers’ skills on the Maigue

Nice water on the Maigue

Angling guide Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling reports from the Maigue and Deel rivers in Co. Limerick…

Robert O’Meara who fished with me in May’22 is back again and again staying at my local Mustard Seed Country House and Restaurant www.mustardseed.ie with his wife Sue, Rob’s dad hailed from scenic Ballyorgan just under the Ballyhouras, Rob grew up in the UK and is now between homes, from Somerset to Kent to be near the grandkids. Although exclusively a reservoir fly-fisher in the UK, Rob has taken to river fly-fishing well and we had a lovely day on the Maigue yesterday, we finished at Adare, having spent a few hours 6 miles upriver near Banogue.

May be an image of 1 person, fishing, body of water and grass

Now a pretty established trend, our rivers seem to be hitting low summer levels by mid-May, and continuing that way throughout the Summer, climate change no doubt. It means one has to have advanced fly-fishing skills as upstream approach is practically essential for success and not something you lick off a stone. Rob had 5 or 6 fish and many more offers, all released of course. The countryside is especially beautifully just now with Hawthorn in full bloom.

South African Graham Gamble also joined me for a session yesterday on the Deel. Spring’s not yet out and we have low water Summer levels already…….challenges aplenty but a lovely day to be on Deelside.

Jack hits the jackpot in West Cork

Jack's first skate, what a catch!

Gary Jennings sent on a great report from a fishing trip in West Cork at the weekend.

My son Jack (17) was visiting his grandparents in west cork for the weekend. We went out on his grandfather John’s boat for the first weekend fishing trip of the summer.

Jack had his own reel and used a “Frankenstein” rod. Made up of a top section of a Shakespeare Omni Boat rod 20/30lb class, worth €25, a Penn reel seat for a beachcaster and a butt section of an old boat rod, with a wooden dowel through the reel seat! The reel was a fixed spool Okuma Ceymar CXT55 loaded with 38lb Berkley Whiplash braided line., and a 200lb leader tied to a single 8/0 Mustad 3407 Forged O’Shaughnessy Hook.

Conger eel

The morning started with 40+ mackerel before 0900. On anchor before 10. Followed by 6 hours of fantastic fishing. With bullhuss over 15lb x20, 2 x ling, 3 x conger, dogfish, large pollack to double figures, 1 dropped skate.

Well-fed pollack

But finally at 16:00 Jack hooked into a skate. All other lines up to give Jack the best chance at fighting the fish. After 30+mins and having the fish at the boat 4 times we managed to leader the fish on the 5th attempt in big tides, lifted onboard with care.

Jack’s first skate, what a catch!

We estimated the fish from measuring to approx 150lb weight. A healthy female in lovely condition. Returned to the depths after a quick photo and measurement.

Well done Jack! Keep up the fishing!

IFI appeals to farmers to protect watercourses during the silage season

  • Best practice six-point SILAGE advice issued to curb agri run-off into waters
  • In 2022, IFI staff carried out almost 2,000 inspections in agricultural settings

Inland Fisheries Ireland has appealed to farmers to help protect Ireland’s rivers and lakes from agricultural pollution during the silage season.

Livestock manure and other organic fertilisers, silage effluent, and soiled water are highly damaging substances, and on entering a watercourse can kill fish and severely impact their habitats.

IFI is advising farmers to follow its six-point SILAGE plan for optimum silage and slurry spreading etiquette to reduce the risk of polluting rivers and lakes:

  1. S. Spread slurry during dry weather only, and never when a period of heavy rain is forecast.
  2. I. Investigate if silage pits are properly sealed to prevent the entry of water, and/or if there is leakage from underneath the slabs.
  3. L. Lead slurry away from a watercourse when working the land. Be aware of the slope of the field, and respect the buffer zones near a river, lake, stream or shoreline.
  4. A. Avoid cleaning slurry tankers/spreading equipment close to a stream, river or lake.
  5. G. Generate good yard cleaning hygiene – to curb effluent and soiled washings from inadvertently flowing to a watercourse
  6. E. Engage with the statutory requirements by ensuring that adequate storage capacity for slurry, soiled water, and silage effluent, meet the regulations.

Farmers are asked to contact their local IFI office before carrying out works in or near any watercourses.

In 2022, IFI staff carried out 1,986 inspections in agricultural settings to help identify environmental risks, and prevent damage to the local aquatic environment and valuable fish populations.

IFI, the State agency responsible for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish and habitats, reminds farmers and members of the public they can report instances of pollution, fish kills or illegal fishing nationwide by calling its confidential 24/7 number, 0818 34 74 24.

Brecon sea anglers get great fishing at Kilmore Quay

ballan wrasse
A lovely wrasse caught by Dylan Daniels on Autumn Dream out of Kilmore Quay

Patrick Daniels was in touch to tell us that Brecon Sea Angling visited Kilmore Quay Wexford for a two days fishing trip aboard Autumn Dream skippered by Eamonn Hayes.

The club visits Kilmore Quay at least once a year and sometime twice. There are a number of reasons they return year after year, but mostly because of the warm welcome and the great fishing.

The number of species caught this time was ten, and the club had a great couple of days on the water.

Patrick and the rest of the club enjoy catching a good range of species at Kilmore Quay on charter boats whose skippers are very knowledgeable. Not only that, but they return to the same accommodation every time – 25 years of return visits to the Quay House. And not least outstanding food in the local pubs and of course Guinness…

IFI secures prosecution and fines of €5,500 against farmer for riverbed destruction in Co Laois

River to the right beside trees and to the left of the river there are piles of gravel that have been removed from the riverbed
Gravel removed from the riverbed

A Co Laois farmer has been found guilty of two breaches of fisheries legislation for deliberate destruction caused at a local river.

The defendant was prosecuted for damaging spawning beds and disturbing spawn or fry during destructive gravel removal works carried out on an 80 metre stretch of the Delour River, a tributary of the River Nore, near Mountrath, Co Laois.

“Landowners need to seek all necessary and relevant information from their advisors, and from IFI, before carrying out any works near or on a watercourse adjacent to their land.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the offences at Portlaoise District Court on April 21st 2023, and was fined €4,000 and ordered to pay a further €1,500 for the costs of the prosecution.

Evidence was given by Fisheries Environmental Officer Oliver McGrath, and the incident took place on September 30th 2022.

The offences were secured under Section 173 of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act 1959, as amended, for injury or disturbance of the spawn or fry of Salmon, Trout or Eels and for the injury or disturbance of their spawning bed, bank or shallow where their spawn or fry may be.

IFI encourages members of the public, anglers and farmers to report incidents such as this, and those of water pollution, fish kills, and illegal fishing to its confidential 24/7 phone number, 0818 34 74 24.
