The Ottewill Trophy is underway at the moment – Good luck to all.
Senan Stanley is a prolific YouTuber and he has a host of angling videos on his channel, where he tries numerous venues and tests out plenty of tackle, giving plenty of tips and tricks in the process.
His latest video features dry fly fishing the spent gnat mayfly on Lough Derg. Fish hooked, fish caught, fish lost and straightened hooks, this one has it all. Click the video above to watch, or check it out on Youtube here.
Angling guide Tomi Kurman is no stranger to specimen trout, with many trout of specimen size (and well above) boated by himself and clients on Lough Corrib over many years. Well he proved that he can turn his hand to specimen wrasse fishing too. On a recent day away from the lake, Tomi and a friend landed a LOT of beautiful wrasse.
As Tomi says “they will never stop amaze me how beautiful they are” We fully agree!
Beautiful colours on this fish
For their day, they landed 1 tub gurnard, 1 coalfish, 3 mackerel, around 25 wrasse – 3 biggest were 57cm, 58cm and 60cm! More than half of total numbers were over 45cm
A chunky ballan
And 80-90 pollock- mostly small ones but 4 were just over 70cm and around 10 over 60cm….
Very different, but just as spectacular colours on this wrasse
Now that’s what we call a good day on the water. And Tomi reckoned he could still feel the ache in his arms that night!
John Fleming reports on more good fishing from Galway Bay, including big pollack, ballan wrasse and a few nice cod smashing soft plastics and slow jigs
Fishing was a bit patchy at times and a lot of small fish on the ground but once you got through them, the action was heavy!
Fine pollackBallan wrasse

A regular day is between 9am- 6pm from either Rossaveal, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

Fishing has been very steady on the west Clare reefs this week with plenty of species showing. Skipper Luke Aston says anglers were getting a nice mixed bag, with a pollack, coalfish and cod on the same trace one of the highlights. Mackerel have moved offshore a bit but still plenty showing once you get out there. Sixgill shark are still proving elusive, however!
Nice triple shotAnother triple shot
The fishing has been so steady that anglers have struggled to stay awake on the steam home. Luckily, Luke has a very comfy wheelhouse!
Zzzzzzzzz!
Sean Maguire on the Lady Gwen also reports plenty of species among the good fishing, with a good few cod showing too.
Fresh bait!

French anglers Berenger, Romain, Cyrille, Jerome, Sylvain and Jean–Luc were over in Ireland once again to stay at Melview Fishing Lodge. These guys know the waters around Longford and were very keen to get out and start fishing.
All smiles for RomainBerenger with a nice 102 cm
Over the week they managed 199 pike to 102 cm and a number of very good size fish lost while playing them to the boat. Casting both soft and hard lures produced fish but it seemed the pike from 50 cm to 80 cm were getting to the lures before the bigger ones had a chance. Most days were hot and still with very little wind but they still kept going and enjoyed the week. On previous visits they have caught some cracking big pike but the 199 Pike they did catch kept them going and we look forward to welcoming them back again to go after those monsters swimming out there.
Cyrille with his 4th of the dayJerome with a future 20 pounder
And a big happy birthday once again to Jean-Luc which we celebrated in style. Thanks for a great week of fun and laughs guys and hope to see you all again soon.
Kevin has over 30 years experience of fishing in Ireland and is happy to offer a guided tour on your arrival, and to advise where the on-form waters in the area are. We can arrange your bait order so it’s here when you arrive. Melview offers free use of 17ft lake boats with engines to our guests (pay fuel only) and Kevin is happy to assist with any pre-baiting requests. Maps and other information regarding fishing are also available.
John Quinlan reports on the bass fishing around Ballinaskelligs Bay…
Just occasionally, all the stars align in bass fishing. Last week was one of those times. The increase in temperature got the bass feeding and they turned up in good numbers everywhere.
1 of 5
Fantastic Kerry bass
The week was topped off with a magnificent 80cms fish for Henry Devall caught in bright sunshine on a Fish minnow. Jack and Dave up from Cork also enjoyed some super sport. Let’s hope the season continues on like this.
Well done guys
Notes: John Quinlan works as a guide catering both for salmon and seatrout anglers and also for those who want a test of saltwater flyfishing. Actually the two types of fishing complement one another perfectly for, when conditions are calm and warm, and the salmon and seatrout refusing to take, the sea fishing is at its best making a welcome and exciting change from sitting on the beach.
17/5/2023 There was some good action in the trolling department today, so let’s head out to the action. First in my striking zone was Currane angler Mr. Tom Nugent of Kilkenny, and fishing out of www.thevillawaterville.com while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com, caught a fine 8lbs salmon on the troll. Now we head for the Bungalow and Dutch Currane angler Mr. Neils Woermeije, fishing out of www.seaclusionwaterville.ie, while trolling with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com, caught a fine 8lb salmon. Staying at the Bungalow, UK Currane Angler Mr. Arnold Slater caught a nice 7lb salmon while trolling with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com. Bright sunshine all day followed by a light WSW breeze.
18/5/2023 Local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com reports that there were 11 boats out manipulating their skills today but sadly the Wild Atlantic Salmon wasn’t on the Currane anglers menu. Wind SW light followed by light misty rain at times, come evening it veered NW light.
19/5/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet on all fronts so on that note we will head for the Mad Fisherman and his famous videos on his trips to the Waterville Fishery and in this video there’s faces well known on the Waterville Fishery and from my blog so take it away you Mad Fisherman, the stage is all yours, just for record Mr. Vincent Donnelly the The Mad Fisherman has 2.72K subscribers Wind NNW light and overcast.
20/5/2023 Most of the Currane anglers had slack lines but I did get a good but sad report on the one got away by Currane angler Mr. Adam Healy, in his own words and I quote, “How are you Vincent? If it’s any reference to your reports I hooked at fine salmon the 8 to 10lb in the Cummeragh bay on the troll with a copper and green Toby. Unfortunately got him to the net and he got a last lease of life and took a fine 2-3ft jump and spat his lure. Also had a fine 2lb trout on the same lure. Kind regards Adam Healy.” Wind WNW light and variable
21/5/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments today. Wind light NNE and variable, followed by misty rain at times and overcast for most of the day.
22/5/23 Local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com reports just three boats out and all quiet on the SW front. Wind light NNE followed by bright sunshine.
23/5/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments today and not surprising considering there was bright sunshine all day followed by a light and variable NNE wind.
Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.
The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-
the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. Dan O’Neill, fishery Manager at Mount Juliet, reports from the River Nore:
Over the weekend I was eager to try some dry fly fishing in an area I had my eye on for the last couple of weeks. I haven’t yet mastered the tying of dry flies but I know a man who has. With a box of flies tied by a good friend of mine, Kevin Oates, it was time for me to go to my long awaited area of choice. As I approached, there were some trout rising just above the area I wanted to try. Seeing this as a good sign I was careful not to be too eager on my entry into the water and, of course, approach to the fish.
My set up today was my trusty 9ft 4wt loaded with Rio technical trout. On the business end I had a 6x 9ft Rio power flex tapered leader. At times I go a bit longer with my leader but was confident in my choice today for given conditions and location. I try not to get to caught up with equipment, I do think the fly line is important and the breakdown of the line taper, if you plan fishing at 15-30ft then something with a short front taper helps load the rod easier for good loop shape and stability. I pick what I feel is right for my casting style and work on my presentation by practising at home on the lawn. I place some targets usually no further than 30ft and work to that distance, mark your fly line at 20ft (1 mark), 25ft (2 marks), 30ft (3 marks) including your leader and work at those distances until your consistent and accurate. When you’re on the river you will know your distances and not be inclined to cast beyond your good presentation point. I found I met more fish by doing this and when teaching I always recommend that you have a mark on your line at 30ft to learn more about what your fly rod is telling you.
As I settled into position I watched very carefully as I like to target a certain fish when I dry fly fish. There was a trout rising just off of a rock seam to my right. Taking the rod carefully and getting into my cast I dropped the fly slightly short of the fish. The next cast however covered the fish and the trout kindly obliged and took in my dry fly. Lifting carefully I steered the fish out of the seam with as little disturbance as possible. A nice trout of about ½ to ¾ of a pound. Many more trout were rising above the location I was in so I eased my way up meeting some nice fish on the way.
As Sunday morning arrived I found myself at 5.30am tying up leaders for my 7am booking. I always like meeting fellow anglers from across the globe as it’s a great way of gaining information and tactics. This week I would be spoiled with information and tactics from a very talented angler, Brent Koehler. Usually fishing in Montana, Brent was a mine of stories from afar that I could have listened to for many many hours. Watching Brent’s approach to the fish and hearing his analysis of where he found the fish were lying was interesting. I stood nearby for the first while and then let Brent along a lovely glide on his own while I watched on.
Brent and one of his Nore trout
I found his appreciation of angling and nature to be refreshing and boosted my appreciation also. Brent had some lovely trout and we lost count as to how many we caught which was probably 20 or possibly over it. A lovely way to spend a Sunday morning and with unique company.

Mayfly has been providing good sport on Corrib for the last 3 weeks, although weather conditions have affected hatches and fishing at times. Northerly winds have kept temperatures more like early spring, with anglers having to wrap up well.
Well-known fishing guide and podcast host Tom Doc Sullivan recently filmed a video with Fulling Mill on wetfly fishing. He teamed up with friend and Corrib expert Mike Keady, and the video is an excellent overview of wetfly tactics at mayfly time.. Check out the video here.
Jasper Mathews of Wild Atlantic Angling Experiences has also been out a bit, and ever the maverick, decided to fish streamers during the mayfly, landing 3 nice fish! His client also had 3 trout on wetfly, so mayfly patterns do still work too!
A fish on a streamer, in May!
Ferox Heaven
Jasper also had a camera-shy client who wanted to try for ferox trout, and they had this lovely 11lbs fish.
Angling guide Tomi Kurman has been hard at it again, with his guests experiencing some amazing ferox trout fishing.
This 79cm fish was caught yesterday, on a day when 4 takes resulted in just one landed.
Other days have been much more successful, with Monday’s guest Lukas Hirudo Pijawa smashing his PB 3 times in one day! His best fish was 86cm and close to 17lbs!
Another memorable day saw 8 trout and a pike landed, but the highlight was an incredible triple hook-up of ferox – 78, 78 and 79cm! Amazing fishing!
Competition Results
Corr na Mona & District Anglers held their annual Mayfly Competition on Sunday. A great day was had by all and we had the results and refreshments in Tí Mháille in Cornamona afterwards.
Barry Molloy of Cong followed up his win in the Hospice Pairs competition earlier this year by winning the event, well done Barry! He won the Dr. Eamonn Sullivan Memorial trophy for the overall top rod and also the Hunter Cup for the largest fish of the day. Second place went to Caolan McDonnell of Cong, he also won the Bay View Cup for the largest trout by a club member. Third place was Maggie Browne from Cornamona, Maggie also won the Acutek Cup for the top female angler and the Fr Reilly Trophy for the largest trout caught by a female angler.
Padraig Walsh Cornamona won the Jack Mooney memorial trophy, Jack’s son Bill and granddaughter Ciara were on hand to present the trophy.

2) Juveniles – age 17 and under.
3) Trolling – Fish caught by adult anglers trolling are eligible for the Trolling prize only.
All are welcome, with registration at the Roach Pond, Lisloughrey from 10.30am. Fishing starts at 11am and weigh in at the Roach Pond is at 6pm sharp. Entry fee is €20 for members and €25 for non club members. Juveniles are free. Traditionally, this has been a fun day out for all the family and often an introduction to fishing for young anglers. We hope for another good day this year.
This year, immediately before the weigh-in we will be unveiling a plaque to the memory of the late Frank Lydon who was instrumental in the purchase and original development of the Roach Pond. It is long overdue for us to mark Frank’s contribution. I hope you can join us to celebrate the occasion.
Environmental Award
Well done to the East Corrib Alliance, a group of four pro-active and conservation-minded angling clubs on the east side of Lough Corrib, which has been selected as this year’s winner of The Galway County Council Cathaoirleach’s Award in the category Environment & Climate Action. Billy Kavanagh of Annaghdown Angling Club said “This is a fantastic acknowledgement of the work of the ECA and the 4 Clubs ( Annaghdown, Kilbeg, Headford and Glencorrib & Cross). We are absolutely delighted and honoured to receive this prestigious award. For an alliance in existence for little more than 18 months it’s a tremendous achievement and we’d like to thank the Cathaoirleach and his team for this award. It gives the ECA the impetus to continue our work.“
