Leister Pike Anglers head to Erne system for 2-day boat competition

The Leinster Pike Anglers switched venues from the Shannon system to the Erne system for this year’s 2-day boat angling competition, and they were rewarded with some super catches. Saturday was a fine day weather-wise, and the biggest fish of the day was an 18lb 3oz pike for Jay Cooke.

Sunday’s duller weather really brought the fish on the feed, and once again, Jay Cooke landed the biggest pike of the day with a fish of 20lb 7oz. Those fish put him right to the top of the leaderboard, with the overall results as follows:

IFI issues alert over Pacific pink salmon in Irish rivers

Inland Fisheries Ireland is urging anglers, and the general public, to report sightings of Pacific pink salmon in Irish rivers over the coming months.

In 2017, 2019 and 2021 this non-native fish species unexpectedly appeared in unprecedented numbers in multiple river systems in the southwest, west and northwest of Ireland.

As Pacific pink salmon predominantly have a two-year lifecycle, there is potential for the species to reappear in Irish rivers again this year and every second, so called ‘odd’, year thereafter.

Anglers, or the public, can report encounters with pink salmon to IFI’s 24/7 phone number, 0818 34 74 24, or via [email protected]. They are also asked to carry out the following actions:

  • Photograph the fish
  • Retain the salmon and don’t put it back into the water (even in rivers only open for catch-and-release angling).
  • Record the date and location of capture, and the length/weight of the fish.
  • Tag the fish and present it to IFI staff, and a new tag will be issued to replace the tag used.

The nearest local IFI staff will arrange collection of the fish for further examination.

About Pacific Pink Salmon

Pacific pink salmon are blue-green to steel blue on the back, with silver sides and a white underbelly. It can be distinguished by several unique characteristics which are different to Atlantic salmon, notably:

  • Upper jaw typically extending beyond the eye
  • Males develop a pronounced humpback on entering freshwater
  • Large black oval spots on the tail
  • 11-19 rays on the anal fin
  • Very small scales– much smaller than a similarly-sized Atlantic Salmon
  • No dark spots on the gill cover

Also known as humpback salmon, pink salmon are a migratory species, native to river systems in the northern Pacific Ocean and nearby regions of the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean.  There are also established populations in rivers in northern  Norway and in the adjacent far northwest of Russia, originating from stocking programmes undertaken in this part of Russia since the 1950s until 2001.

Fishing on Loughs Conn & Cullin a bit of a mixed bag

Steve Schreck reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Fishing on the lakes was a bit of a mixed bag with prolific days accompanied by rather slow days also. Hatches of mayfly are picking up but are still sporadic.

Ian Wise fished with two Cork anglers Thursday to Saturday, mainly staying in Ned’s Bay, Castlehill Bay and Flannery’s Bay. Thursday and Saturday were good days, while Friday proved to be very difficult with high air pressure coming in. The two anglers caught in the region of 20 fish over the course of their three-day trip with the best fish weighing 1.5lbs. Successful flies were Brown Wulff and Yellow Wulff. Ian recorded a massive, but localised hatch of mayflies on Saturday in Flannery’s Bay.

Peter Roche ventured out on Tuesday at Castlehill, fishing dry Mayflies. He caught and released 5 trout with a combined weight of 8lbs, one of those being an absolute beauty of 3lbs.

Peter Roche’s beautifully coloured 3lbs trout from Castlehill Bay, Lough Conn

Garry Binley wet a line on Wednesday, catching 7 fish around Castlehill Bay.

Peter Roche ghillied Cork anglers Tadgh Concannon and Liam van Gendt on Friday and Saturday mainly fishing Ned’s Bay and Flannery’s Bay.  The two anglers caught 4 trout with the best fish weighing 1.75lbs. In the early morning, dry mayflies seemed to work better, while in the afternoon spent mayfly fishing was more successful. The best fish were caught when Peter spotted a good hatch of olives and matched the hatch for his two clients.
