A look back at the last trip of the season on Lough Arrow

Ewan McGregor, setting a drift up in Laundry bay Lough Arrow
Lough Arrow providing some excellent end of season fishing

Angling guide Jackie Mahon, of Jackie Mahon Flies and Guiding, reports on his last day fishing this season…

It has been a long season with guiding and fly tying. It all finished for me on the 28th of September guiding on the lovely Lough Arrow with David Flynn and Scottish Angler Ewan McGregor. The day started off well with the first drift of the morning moving two browns and landing one nice fish around the 2lb weight. Ewan then hooked a fish that between the three of us we reckon was well over the 5lb weight.

We moved to another area of the lake which is one of my favourite spots and holds some large brownies. We were not long drifting when David hooked a nice fish on one of my stimulators, which David called the terminator, unlucky for David another one got away.

Not long after that Ewan bends the rod into a cracking brown trout. One of Arrows beloved fish. When we landed the trout Ewan’s smile said it all, this made my day to see another angler enjoying one of Arrows hard fighting browns which was caught on one of my flies called the “Informer Dabbler” which will be listed in the Fulling Mills collection for 2023.

After a quick picture we released the trout back into the wilds of Lough Arrow. We decided to continue drifting in that area hoping to pull another brown, but it was not meant to be.

We decided to head for lunch, all we could talk about was the big one that got away. Ewan took out his hip flask and we toasted fishing, friendship and a great season. We all knew it was time to hit the water again. I decided to try over at the thumbs with a cold north western wind blowing now. I set the boat on the drift straight away the trout took the Informer Dabbler and David landed this one.

I asked if one of the lads would be willing to try an Airflow DI3 sweep line for a while. Ewan decided to give it a go. We fished hard for a few more hours only for some half hearted chances. With the wind feeling a lot colder and stronger we decided to stop for the day and finish off with the last hail Mary cast over at the Flag of Aghanagh.

We finished with three nice browns and a good few misses. Here is to the 2023 season and we’re looking forward to it, meeting and making new friends which is what fishing is all about.

If you would like to get in touch about guided fishing for 2023, please get in touch there are still some days available for Lough Arrow and Lough Melvin.

Thanks Jackie Mahon

Some nice pike for anglers in the Virginia and Bailieboro area

An 18lb pike for Paul Byrne
Paul Byrne of Buebell Angling Club with a lovely 18lb pike from Lough Ramor last weekend

Water levels today were at a level not seen for some time after yesterday’s heavy rains. The thunderstorms and torrential rain seem to have produced widespread flooding throughout the region. The Boyne and Kells Blackwater were in heavy flood today and Lough Ramor was high. Despite all that, today was a complete contrast with summery conditions and temperatures well into the teens. It’s no wonder that coarse and pike anglers were taking full advantage of the fine day. Anglers were even able to fish in tee shirts and polo tops. Not something you see too often in October.

Anglers on Lough Ramor were definately expecting to hit fish during their session and there were a couple of dropped runs while I was there this morning. Members of the Bluebell Angling Club were visiting again today and reported some nice fish over the previous weekend. Paul Byrne and Phil O’Neill had a couple of cracking fish on legered dead baits. Phil broke his personal best record with a lovely pike that weighed in at 20.9lbs. Paul then followed up almost immediately with a quality fish of 18lbs.

In the Bailieboro area some nice pike were also reported to dead baits. Fish of 16lbs and 12lbs respectively being reported. The pike are still actively feeding at the moment so maybe its time to try your luck over the weekend.

Wobble leads to treble double at Leinster Pike Anglers winter league

The Leinster Pike Anglers hit a river venue for the second leg of their winter league last weekend and with bad weather forecast, it looked like it was going to be a tough day on the banks. But the rain held off for most of the day which made for a more enjoyable day’s fishing. As often happens, the fishing was great for some and poor for others as some anglers returned blanks while others had bags in the 30’s and 40’s. Four doubles were caught on the day, three of which fell to one angler who fished a wobbled smelt.

Overall results as follows:

1st Anthony Lennon 8 fish 49lb’7oz
2nd Terry Collins 4 fish 39lb
3rd Rodney Gaynor 13 fish 38lb
Heaviest Fish – Mark Byrne 13lb’10oz
1st Pools Anthony Lennon & Luke Kearns 21 fish 84lb’1oz
2nd Pools Tommy Coffey & Terry Collins 12 fish 65lb’2oz

Octoperfest in full swing for Wicklow Boat Charters

Anglers fishing with Wicklow Boat Charters are having a bit of a late-season bonanza at the moment, as October is proving to be a good month for tope. Weather at this time of year is unpredictable, and the changeability can mess up the fishing, but when conditions do come right, there seem to be plenty of tope still hanging around the east coast. And it looks like there are still a few specimens knocking about too, so if you want to get your name in the next ISFC Specimen Report, you could do worse than head to Wicklow before the end of the month.

Newport Sea Angling Club – October Boat Competition Results

This report courtesy of Newport SAC:

Newport SAC hosted their final competition of the season on Sunday, October 9th. This was a team of four event, where the total number of fish caught by each of the four team members were combined together to calculate the overall winning team. Only two fish separated the top two teams in the end in what was a very closely fought contest in difficult conditions.

Fortunately, the rain that had been forecast for the early part of the day didn’t materialise which allowed for a dry ‘check in’ on the quayside on Sunday morning. The frying pan was flat out and hot cups of tea were welcomed by the anglers as they descended on the quay in Newport for the early check in.

As the boats left the relatively calm conditions of the inner bay, further out to sea, the strong wind that had been forecast created a swell against the outgoing tide. This resulted in difficult conditions for both the skippers (holding anchor) and testing conditions for the anglers. After the turn of the tide, the weather eventually settled (as the day went on) and the catch varied on each of the boats.

Lines up was at the designated time of 4.30pm and all boats returned to Newport Quay where team members met to discuss their respective catches.

The prize presentation took place in the Grainne Uaille and all of the prizes were presented by Pat Moran Jnr (representing the sponsor J.Coffey construction).

The Winning Team was TEAM E (representing ‘The Village Inn’, Killala). The team members were Peter Coyne, Padraic Munnelly, Josie Barret & Anthony Masterson with a total of 56 fish & 310 points.

The local shield was won by the Grainne Uaille TEAM A (and this ensures that next year’s presentation will once again take place in the Grainne Uaille).

The overall Individual Winner was Peter Coyne with a total of 35 fish and 175 points.

Skipper of the Day was Gerry who skippered the White Seahorse.

A special thanks from all at Newport SAC to J.Coffey (construction) who kindly sponsored this event and helped to make it happen. We would also like to thank Harry, Liz and all the staff in the Grainne Uaille for supplying finger food for all the competitors during the presentation. The club will hold an RNLI church gate collection in Newport, Mulranny, Tiernaur & Kilmeena on the 12th & 13th of November. Please support this worthy cause.

This wraps up our boat angling events for this season but please check our website www.newportseaanglingclub.com for our Junior Shore Angling outings which we hope to run over the Winter. A huge thank you to all who took part, helped out, supported or sponsored us in any way throughout the year and we look forward to meeting everyone again in 2023.

Shane Dunne of Connaught Match Group reports on the Connaught Match Group October festival…

Following on from the successful May Bank Holiday weekend festival last weekend October 15th and 16th saw a 2 day festival held on the River Suck at Donamon.

With recent rainfall it meant the River level was high and rising water levels during both competition days meant it would make the fishing difficult.

On day 1 Cavan angler Tommy Dowd won the day with a catch of 4.825kg of roach followed closely by Aaron Hutchman(Belfast) on 4.675kg and Shane Dunne (Mayo, formerly Roscommon town) on 4.525kg.

Day 2 saw the water levels rise further which reflected on the anglers catches unfortunately but Shane Dunne prevailing to win day 2 and win the 2 day festival with an overall weight of 7.150kg followed in 2nd place by Aaron Hutchman 6.575kg and in 3rd place Tommy Dowd 6.425kg.

Overall Winner Lee Symonds
Overall Winner Lee Symonds

IFI’s Andy Burnett reports on the Carrigallen Festival…

The 2022 festival season around Leitrim/Cavan winds down for another year , with the last of the local festivals being the Carrigallen fished from 3rd – 7th October, 30 anglers from all over Ireland and the UK fished this final festival of the year in what can only be described as atrocious weather conditions with high water levels , driving rain and often gale force winds.

Despite this the fishing was very consistent across the venues used and produced some good fishing on several lakes much to everyone’s delight.

Overall winner was the ever consistent Lee Symonds , with a total of 51.750 kilos

  • 1st Lee Symdons with 51.750 kilos
  • 2nd  Seamie Winters with 49.050 kilos
