Paul Hallen pipped for Portumna September Festival despite 84lbs bag

Paul Hallen

The Rodgers Island section of the mighty river Shannon provided a top catch for Worcestershire angler Paul Hallen at the Portumna Coarse Angling Club‘ September Festival. His top weight of 84lbs of roach caught mostly on the whip was backed up by several good weights in the 70’s and 30-40’s across the sections. But it was local angler Arunas Mlecka whose consistent fishing scored 5 points to win the top prize of €1000.

Door closes on another season for Munster Blackwater

Flooded Blackwater
The river from the hut at Glenda Powel's Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Rains during September assisted in distributing Salmon throughout the system with some being taken as far upstream as Millstreet, Co. Cork.

Indeed, it is fair to say that the final week of September has proven to be one of the best weeks for catches in a long time, but this is likely because more of an effort is usually made during the final week anyway.

Good salmon catches on Inny at end of season, trout fishing on Currane for another week

Copal - Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Waterville…

29/9/2022 We start with a backdates on the C&R River Inny, if you remember I mentioned the Cork lad last week. Well he caught and released 7 Salmon on the Spin, fair play to him. Now yesterday’s Inny C&R anglers caught 8 Salmon. Now back to today’s action, there two Salmon caught on the troll, now to the Currane drifters, one boat reported 5 Sea Trout to his boat and just for the record there were a good few Brown Trout caught also. Wind NNE veered NNW light with reasonable cloud cover.

30/9/2022 Well as we all know today was the last day of the 2022 Salmon season and we finished in style in the Villa Maria for the traditional Bacon and Cabbage. I will get back to the Villa Maria after the Salmon and Sea Trout facts of the day.

We start on the C&R River Inny there were 3 Salmon reported. Now we head for the Butler Pool, UK Anglers Michael and James McSweeney while fishing on the World-famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie  caught two Salmon on the fly and accompanied by their Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville boats and at [email protected]

Now we go upstream to Lough Currane, Currane angler, Mike from Cork, caught two Grilse and 5 Sea Trout on the fly, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and at www.fishingwithdom.com . Wind SW veered WNW fresh to strong at times and overcast until the afternoon.

Just for the record there was a bit of rain again this morning. Now back to the Villa Maria, well I can say without any fear of contradiction the Bacon and Cabbage was absolutely first class and we finished off with a delicious Apple crumble. So on behalf of the Currane Anglers a big thank you to Fiona, Dan and all their staff for a great night in the Villa Maria and at www.thevillawaterville.com

1/10/2022 The Currane drifters were all quiet this day. Wind WNW light to fresh.

2/10/20222 Just 3 boats on the drift, a few Sea Trout caught. The best Trout was in the 2 lbs class. Wind WNW and veered WSW light, with reasonable cloud cover.

3/10/2022 Just one boat out on the drift and as my phone was all quiet in all departments this day. I will take it that the Currane drifters lines were slack. Now for quote of the Day and it comes from Italy, a lot may have read it on Facebook, but it is such a cracker of a comment on yesterday’s report and I quote, Fishing is like LIFE. You need Passion, Patience, Love for What you are Doing, you Need to Forgive and Let go, And REEL in All The Beautiful things that come to YOU!!

4/10/2022 No reports of any rod benders on the drift. Wind WNW veered SW and variable, followed by heavy rain for most of the day.

5/10/2022 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong WNW blowing followed by reasonable cloud cover and just for the record there was a good flood early this morning. Back to the Lake there were no boats out. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 24.0 mm.

6/10/2022 There were a few Sea Trout caught on the drift today. Wind WSW average wind speed 20 mph gusts up to 31 mph followed by good cloud cover. Just for the record there was two boats manipulating their skills. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 9.9mm.

End of season round up from the River Bandon

River Bandon

Jason NAsh gives an end of season round up for the River Bandon…

Another season on the Bandon has drawn to a close. The final week was relatively quiet with low water prevailing but overall, runs this year have been excellent right from early spring.

Spring salmon were caught from March with really good numbers of fish running in April and May. A wetter spring would have seen more caught on rod and line!

Cue June and the run of fish only got better and better. It was a pleasure to see many big fish running and being caught, especially when a decent flood arrived in July and most anglers enjoyed excellent sport. Indeed, at least 2 fish over 20lb were caught and released this season along the river.

August and September will be remembered for persistent low water to the point where members were asked to stop fishing and visitor permits were no longer available. Thank you to all anglers for acknowledging that particularly difficult time and respecting our quarry.

It was great that we got at least one good flood before the season ended and big numbers of fish were caught yet again with most of them returned due to their colour as no backend run of fresh salmon materialised.

As per usual, we would like to take this opportunity to remind all anglers to return their logbooks and unused tags to Inland Fisheries Ireland by October 19th.

Bring on season 2023!
