Monster trout on size 10 fly from Lough Mask

What a whopper. Late season monster from Mask.

Edmund Corry and Mike O’Shea fished Lough Mask yesterday (29 September) and managed to end the season with a fish of a lifetime. The fact it was caught on a fly made it all the more special to Edmund.

Fishing a size 10 Mayfly on a clear intermediate leader over deep water between Gortmore and The Shintellas he hooked a fish that was clearly something bigger than normal. After a 25 minute fight that tested his 6 weight rod and 10lbs leader to the limit the fish was ably netted by Mike. They estimated the huge trout to weigh maybe as much as 17 or 19lbs. Edmund told us it was a thrill to be so close to a trout so big, that it was just a glorious experience.

On seeing the size of the trout thanks were given to the tier of the fly, Edmund’s friend Mike Kileen.

There were a few photos taken and the then the trout was revived and it swam away strongly.

Records fall in Donegal as Mariners keep reeling them in

The ever-active Killybegs Mariners were out for the second round of their league last week, and 19 anglers enjoyed a spectacular west Donegal sunset as they hit the surf. Flatties and dogs proved to be the most active species during the evening with a couple of decent flounder and turbot propelling anglers up the leaderboard. At the end of the evening, Brian Smith made it two wins in a row with his haul of 4 dogs and two flounder.

A nice turbot

Later in the week, club records fell like dominoes, with new species records set for garfish, corkwing wrasse, saury and long spined sea scorpion.

Club record corkwing

Meanwhile, club member Cormac Burke hit the magic 60 species mark for the year by landing a spray, which brought the club total for the year to 71. 👏 Impressive angling all around!

Number 60, it might be small, but they all count

Dry flies do the trick on Lene

The very mild temperatures on Thursday (Sept 29) brought some of Lough Lene’s browns and rainbows to the surface for Mick Flanagan to enjoy some super dry fly fishing late in the season.

Mick, of Midland Angling and Shooting, hosted Peter Neeson from Glenravel in Co. Antrim, only a 140 odd miles from the Midlands! There were a few cracking rainbows for the pair before the wind dropped in the evening.

Ireland’s Feeder King Finale

Ireland’s Feeder King came to a successful conclusion last weekend after a two-day finale for the anglers who came through from the eight rounds of qualifiers during the summer, and it was in form Robertas Zilaitis who took the crown with just over 26kg overall.

Day one had been closely contested, with Zilaitis’ 13.10 kg from the Deeps section edging him in front of Brenton Sweeney (12.00kg), Mark Leonard (11.88kg) and a handful of other anglers, including Youth World Champ Charlie Richards, who broke the 10.00kg mark.

With an identical weight on day two, made of all small fish, Robertas weighed in at just over 26kg for the final to give him the prestigious Title.

Second was Charlie Richards, who put in an awesome performance on the sillan deeps with a weight of 15.780 kg of mostly skimmers to give him an overall total of just over 25kg. Placing in 3rd was Mark Leonard with just under 25kg over the 2 days.

TOP 10 OVERALL.

  • 1st Robertas Zilaitis 26.140kg
  • 2nd Charlie Richards 25.620kg
  • 3rd Mark Leonard 24.920kg
  • 4th Brenton Sweeney 23.760kg

The CM Lakelands Feeder Club would like to thank all that helped with the weigh ins, qualifiers, pegging and results. This was the first year of Irelands Feeder King and judging by what we have heard from the anglers and the ticket sales, it has been a huge success.

Irelands Feeder King 2023 qualifiers will be announced next January.

East Coast shows it’s top for tope at Greystones Tope Festival

Greystones Ridge Angling Club held their Tope Festival the week before last, having had to cancel earlier in the season due to poor weather. Luckily, the weather (just about) held for them the second time round as a total of 14 boats participated in the two-day festival.
While tope were the main quarry, other animal species were also included in the competition, meaning that if the tope didn’t play ball, other species could be targeted. As it happens, there were no shortage of tope, with around 100 caught over the course of the competition, including 7 to specimen size.
Competitors also got to use the excellent clubhouse facilities for the post-competition food and drinks where a great feed was put out for hungry anglers. There was a wide range of competition prizes for various different categories, meaning plenty of anglers featured in the prizes.
Full results as follows:
1st Place Longest Tope Cian Driver 164.5cm

Super 6-Gill Shark video from Carrigaholt Sea Angling

Luke Aston from Carrigaholt Sea Angling hosted Hookpoint Fishing Magazine and John Locker of The Fishlocker aboard the Clare Dragoon recently. The target was to tag the first 6 gill sharks on the eastern side of the Atlantic and in doing so, also result in the largest tagged sharks aside from basking sharks in the British Isles and Ireland.

A full write up will be in issue 010 of Hookpoint Fishing Magazine – https://hookpoint.co.uk

The tags used were from the collaborative shark tagging programme from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Full details can be found here – https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/resour…

Leinster Pike Anglers winter league off to a flyer for some

The Leinster Pike Anglers got their winter league off to a good start last week as 26 anglers lined out on a river venue for the first match of the season. Fishing conditions were good, but the fishing was patchy, with some locations proving to be on fire, while other spots did not produce as well. The lucky anglers who topped the table managed to record very impressive bags on the day.
Results as follows:
1st Rodney Gaynor 19 fish for a whopping 71’08
2nd Luke Ó Ciaráin 22 fish for another cracking bag 69’05
3rd Anthony Byrne 13 fish for a respectable 43’11
Heaviest Fish – Sean Woods 10lb

Weather wrecks the fishing… but wrecks fish well in Wicklow

Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters had a bit of a blowout of a week, as he had to cancel 5 groups due to bad weather. Frustrating as that is, he did manage to fit in a couple of days, and when the weather obliged that fishing was top-notch.

He managed one day on the wrecks where a group new to wrecking got off to a flying start with plenty of pollock around the 5lb mark, and one lunker just shy of 10lb.

A lunker from the wrecks

He also put in a day on the hunt for Tope, and that turned out quite well too, with plenty of fish of a decent stamp, including one to specimen size.

2022 sea trout season on Moy Estuary described as exceptional

The Moy Estuary at dawn (photo courtesy of Lonan O'Farrell & Michael Wilson)

Judd Ruane is back with one last report from the Moy Estuary before the season closes…

2022 has been an exceptional year for quality sea trout with more fish being tagged than ever before and the majority were released.

Also notable was the welcome return of our overseas anglers who were missing since 2019 due to this Pandemic. Overall a wonderful season!

The estuary remains open for sea trout fishing until October 10. For more than thirty years my requests to close it with the salmon season on September 30 falls on deaf ears. I’ll continue to finish my season in late September and hope that a focus on conservation will see the regulations changed to match this next season.

On a positive note, I recently observed an IFI jetski patrolling the shores of the estuary at low tide. Now that’s progress!
