A nice Roscommon pike, Ireland

Following up on our last pike fishing report Sébastien Morel has been in contact again with news about some very nice pike catches in Roscommon.

A nice Roscommon pike, Ireland

A fall in the water temperatures is getting the pike moving again resulting in some very nice pike for Seb and his clients.

The lads had ten pike on Wednesday with the best fish measuring 98 and 100cm. Well done to Seb and his clients.

Wicklow Boat Charter; September wreck fishing, specimen tope and bass review

Tub gurnard

Wicklow Boat Charters Skipper, Kit Dunne, reports on some recent results out of Wicklow…

On the way to wrecks

WRECK fishing off Wicklow proves to be very productive in Autumn, with recent trips producing Pollock, Coalie, & Pouting in numbers. On two trips this week to the 20Nm wrecks, in reasonable weather there were plenty of Pollock to 7lb, no specimens but a nice feed for all on-board.

Some anglers opted for the simple 3-up rigs while others went gilling with shad type lures, both methods proved successful.

TOPE fishing has been excellent this week, with the big females and males in tow making an appearance most days. An afternoon session proved very successful after picking up a couple of fresh mackerel, (which proved to be the most difficult part), we then set up anchor for Tope. It wasn’t long before novice angler Alex had a massive run which produced a fine Male Specimen Tope of 155.5cm, estimated around 45lb. This was later followed by a fine Specimen of 156cm taken by experienced angler Denis Power.

Unfortunately Wednesday didn’t produce inshore with SW F5 winds putting a swell in the most sheltered parts of the Bay.

BASS fishing still proves to be productive although we still have a bit of work to do, were still picking out ones and twos to 4 and 5lb but no double figure fish yet. Watch this space.

SPURDOG  should be coming to our waters now, plenty of trips planned for October thru to April for the big Specimen fish coming to our deep waters.

Buckets of blues and loads of ling for anglers on Silver Dawn

ling

Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters reports some super shark fishing aboard the Silver Dawn.

15 September: Our two anglers from Holland decided to have another session on sharks today as the tuna are late arriving on the south coast. 15 Blues including 2 over 100lb made it a good choice. Frans and Paulus have caught 31 this week over the 2 days we targeted shark. Henk here is helping his fellow countrymen land the fish and when the water is warm they don’t always want to come onboard easily despite a long fight

16 September: The last day out for our visiting Dutch anglers and we decided to try for Bluefin. We haven’t hooked up yet but we have seen several bursts of tuna on the surface so hopefully they have finally arrived off West Cork.

In the meantime Frans and Paulus are resting their arms from all of their shark exploits and the chair is waiting on deck so that they can take it easy if a Bluefin takes a lure.
Either way it’s not a bad way to spend a Friday in September.

19 September: Just back from another epic offshore spin in perfect weather. Wrecking and shark were the target with 5 top lads boating 40 ling from 5 to 22lb and 43 Blue Sharks including 2 specimens.

Best craic was our hurried attempt to get a line out for tuna when we saw them close to Silver Dawn. We hooked and played a Bluefin for 10 mins before it spat the hook…

Fine weather and good fishing in Clare

Coalfish

Skipper Luke Aston has been putting guests over some nice fish lately, with some nice blue shark coming to the boat, and bottom fishing producing some fine whiting. Plenty of spurs were also taking baits, with some up to 18lbs.

Blue shark
Another nice blue

Regular guest Andy was back for another go for sixgill shark, he has had 3 so far this season but it was not to be on this occasion. Good conger eel and coalfish probably softened the blow somewhat!

No wind, no sharks? No problem, tope and more in Galway Bay

Lack of wind isn’t often a feature of fishing on the west coast, but that was the case for a day shark fishing this week. John Fleming says the wind was so slack thar the slick just drifted a big circle around the boat!

However the other species more than made up for the lack of sharks, with some lovely ling, pollack, whiting, coalies and pouting on the drift.

“Around 2PM we decided to call it quits and headed in the bay in search of some tope. We had a while to wait before they found the baits but we managed 6 tope with Alan McEvoy having the best fish. Nothing big but good sport at least.

robertas

The best feeder anglers around participated including indeed the podium 2nd, ever consistent Rimantas,3rd the brilliant Darren Fairhurst, and 3rd the tenacious venue strong man Jim McAllister.

Others to threaten doggedly on the last day were Alan Larkin, Shamie Winters, Brenton Sweeney, Philip Jackson, Stephen Whyte and Piotr Horbiński.

County Monaghan Pairs

Co Monaghan pairs 2022 champions are Craig Ellis and Dave Finnegan on a fine 4 out of 5 days, 10 points total.

Pairs winners
Pairs winners

A nail biting finish today saw this pair eclipse Helen Dagnall and Dave Brooks by a single point and just 200 grammes. Will Mc Cranor won the day again with a fine 21kg plus and his 1 point helped him and his top partner Billy Kirk to 4th place on the podium pairs with a 15 pt total.

Following Dave and Helen was Tom Barlow and Pete Duffy on 14 pts while the final podium spot was nailed on 16pts by jim Brockie and Ian Shepard.

Some splendid fishing was had by all of our competitors with a daily average of just under 13kgs of fish brought to the scales by every single competitor.

All pairs have already committed for 2023 with at least 10 further pairs also now in the mix, along with a number of home based pairs.

The event will be organised by us again next year, holding its slot in the 2023 calendar and following a review of this year’s events, it is likely that the same on the ground running process will be followed.

A big thanks goes to Craig Ellis and Dave Finnegan for their sterling work throughout the week, in the day to day running.

A target of 30 pairs for 2023 is realisable and already close to being achieved.

Species fishing was on the agenda over the weekend for guests on the Lady Gwen ii, and they certainly made the most of it. The photos below give just a taste of the many species on offer off the Clare coastline, truly some of the best fishing on offer. Skipper Sean Maguire certainly put his crew on some great fishing.
