Wrecks producing plenty of quality pollack for Wicklow Boat Charters

The recent spell of settled weather has allowed Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters to head out to some east coast wrecks recently. Kit has put a fair bit of work into developing these wreck marks in recent years, and they are certainly paying back that work given the quality of the pollack his anglers are bagging! The pick of the bunch was a superb 12lb specimen-sized fish for Matt Somers, and there have been a few others close to that stamp.

A meaty 12lb of east coast wreck pollack!

Tough days for anglers on Conn & Cullin

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

The lakes are fishing poor at present with water temperatures high and fish seem to be inactive with fly life very spare on the water. Local anglers are saying no fish are moving at all.

Peter Roche from Cloghans fished 2 evenings last week and had 4 small trout just under a pound to a dry Daddy Long Legs along Brackwansha and Cormorant Rocks. All fish were released alive. The second evening produced one trout to the boat in Castlehill Bay. The fish weighed around one lb and was released.

Best of luck and tight lines to local trout angler, Jim Kelly from Cloghans, who is the captain of the Irish team and taking part in the Four Nations Youth International Fly-Fishing Competition on Lough Lene, Collinstown!

Bluefin Tuna are back in town!

First tuna of the year for Killybegs Fishing Trips

After a long wait, we are delighted to report that the bluefin tuna season has kicked off in style, with two boats registering a fish in the past 24 hours. All bluefin tuna fishing in Ireland is done as part of the Tuna CHART project, and they are tagged and released so that the movements of these great fish can be monitored.

Killybegs Fishing Trips had their first day out on the water chasing bluefin and got off to a great start with a few close hook-ups and a lovely fish of 600lb caught, tagged and released.

In the heat of the battle…

Not to be outdone, anglers on Tuna.ie also managed their first of the season, catching, tagging and releasing a fish of circa 500lbs

It’s great to see these superb fish arrive back on our coasts and let’s hope this season is a successful one with many more tuna tagged and released.

Specimen sized pollack in Sligo Bay

Skipper Tommy McCallion of seafishingsligo.ie reports on some great fishing for pollack & cod in Sligo Bay:

Damien and some friends visiting from Poland had a super day angling using light gear with spinning rods for big pollack and boat rods for bottom fishing. They had pollack up to specimen weight with a few nice cod also in the mix along with plenty of other species. The fishing has been good in Sligo Bay from the start of the season, with lots of mackerel since the beginning of April.  Book a day angling with seafishingsligo.ie

Anglers pick up the rods again after 10 years and still have the knack for catching.

Seamus Bracken and his two friends Sean & Gary hadn’t been fishing in years (in fact, Gary had never fished before at all) when they decided to pick up the rods again and see if they still had the knack for it. They decided to concentrate most of their fishing in the Ballybay area, and they found that they hadn’t lost the knack at all. Their catches have included big roach, 1.5lb+ rudd, tench to 5.4lbs and plenty of hybrids. They say the fishing has been getting better week on week and sent in a few photos to prove it!

41st Coarse Angling World Championship for Clubs – 2022

Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th saw the 41st edition of the FIPSed World Championship Coarse Angling for Clubs which took place on the Bruxelles-Chareloi Canal near Roinquires in Belgium.

It was a tough couple of days for Club BSI Sensas representing Ireland; the squad consisting of Fint Brennan, Conor Browne, Gary Doyle, Enda Hickey and Cathal Hughes led by Gavin Walsh and Shane Kavanagh.

As the team found out during their training days in the build up to the main event, the Bruxelles-Charleroi Canal is a tough venue. Some 34 club teams participated the championship, with Dutch team Maver-Zammatoro winning outright.

Despite the quality and experience of the anglers fishing for Club BSI Sensas, they finished in 30th position – a reflection of the difficult venue and quality of the opposition that they faced. Better luck next time lads.

First ever Golden Grey for young angler Sean Ward measures up to specimen size

Sean Ward had a recent fishing trip to West Cork with his dad Nicky and brother Conor. Nicky & Conor are both specimen anglers and they were targeting gilthead bream. Sean decided to go after some golden grey mullet he had seen topping in the area as he had never caught one before. He spent a while casting and re-casting towards the shoal and suddenly the rod bent over as he struck into a decent fish. After a while, he brought the fish to the net and was delighted to see that it was a specimen-sized golden grey. Not a bad way to open your species account! Well done Sean!

Artur targets tench and gets a great catch in Cavan

Artur ‘Pike Seeker’ took some time out from his usual quarry to target some tench in the Cavan area recently and he sent us in this report:

My friend and I decided to spend a few days of fishing vacation at a lake venue last week. The choice fell on Lake Oughter in Co. Cavan as we wanted to catch tench, and we know there are a lot of tench on this lake. We threw out the groundbait, put the corn on the hook and waited for the first bites. Most of the bites were in the evening and again in the morning. We managed to catch a dozen beautiful healthy tench. The weather was good, the fish were fine it was a beautiful area. I recommend to everyone.
