Sea trout aplenty on the Moy Estuary

Steve Hazledine from Twickenham enjoys fishing the estuary

Skipper Judd Ruane reports from the Moy Estuary…

The good sea trout fishing on the Moy Estuary continued last week. Amongst the successful anglers were Kenny Brennan from Bray and Steve Hazledine from Twickenham. Steve enjoyed “a cracking day” on the Estuary with plenty good trout (most of them released). It was Steve’s 25th year visiting Ballina and fishing sea trout with Judd.

Brilliant Ireland win Home Nations Shore Championships

The Irish Senior Men's Team with the Home Nations trophy

Massive congratulations to the senior men’s Ireland shore fishing team, who were celebrating last night after winning the Home Nations Championship. Held at Weymouth on the south coast of England, this is even more impressive because they beat the English team on their home patch, on beaches where many of the English team practise regularly.

Captained by JP Molloy, no stranger to Irish teams, the senior team had a great start on DFay 1 with 3 zone wins, including captain Molloy and brothers Chris and David O’Sullivan from Tralee. They backed that up on Day 2, with JP again taking a zone win, and Darren Ryan and Stephen O’Donovan, the other members of the team, chipping in with a second zone win and a second place to finish on 30 points, just one point ahead of England in second spot. England are rarely beaten on their home soil, so this is a remarkable achievement by a great group of anglers.

The Irish Senior Men’s Team with the Home Nations trophy

And it was a case of incredibly hard luck for the fantastic under-16 team of Liam Davis, Shane O’Neill, Nathan de Kleer, Billy Gilvarry and Cameron Gilbert, who were pipped to the gold medal by England on a countback. Both teams were tied on 30 points, but England won it by two centimetres after hundreds of fish caught! A great performance from these young lads, many of whom will surely be featuring on senior Irish teams in the future.

The Youths team (u-21) also finished in a strong second place, losing by 4 points to England but well ahead of Scotland and Wales. Well done to Cian Corcoran, Bradley Kirwan, Finnian McCarthy, Noah Tahran and Eoin Foley who fished superbly and represented Ireland very well.

Unfortunately, the ladies team finished 4th in their competition, but this will be a learning experience on foreign soil, one that will stand them in good stead when it is Ireland’s turn to host the championship. They were in second place after Day 1, with 3 second placings to their name, but fell away on Day 2 a bit. Well done to Ava Marshall, Janet Snoddy, Liz McMahon, Rosaleene Murphy and Kaitlyn de Kleer.

The Youths and Ladies teams, with the flag of the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers, proudly representing the four provinces in England.Once again, well done and congratulations to all the anglers, and coaches and parents who travelled and made a great success of the event for Ireland!

Excellent fishing on the Moy after flood!

Kevin O’Boyle reports from the River Moy…

Starting on the Monday morning water levels at Ballylahan Bridge were already high at 1.455 m and rose and fell over the next few days to 1.037m tailing off towards the weekend to 0.71m on Sunday night.

EMAA haved been running an initiative for the last few years, the Swinford 250 C&R cup which is presented to the person (EMAA MEMBERS ONLY) who catches and releases the largest fish caught that season. Anyone who caught and returned a fish of 7lb or greater was also entered into the draw which was held at the end of the season for prizes to the value of €1,000.

The competition has proven to be successful, so in an effort to keep the focus on C&R the committee has decided to change the format of the competition to make it more inclusive and recognise anyone who returns a fish, whether it be a spring fish or grilse.

For the last 3 months of the season and going forward next year EMAA will have a monthly draw. Therefore, If you return a fish and have satisfactory evidence of this, by way of a witness or photo/video your name will go into the hat towards the monthly prize of €100 euro of tackle vouchers.

So, why not try and get your name in that hat. If you catch and return a fish please get in touch with the office of EMAA at [email protected] or Paul Kelly on [email protected] or Brendan Wilson on [email protected] with details of your success. This competition is open to EMAA members only.

Approximately 20 grilse were caught upstream of the Railway bridge on the Lake River and approximately 30 grilse were reported caught at Pontoon Bridge.

Reports from Lough Conn say that 30 salmon were caught, all trolling.  Windy weather and choppy waters kept a lot of anglers off the lakes.

At least 40 salmon were reported from the upper River Deel, mostly above Crossmolina town.

Reports in relation to the Ballyvary River indicate that at least 10 salmon were caught for the week.

Brilliant inshore fishing makes up for windy weather in Galway Bay

Pollack

Skipper of the Brazen Hussy II in Galway Bay, John Fleming says fishing has been a bit quiet lately… “the weather was hindering us big time for getting offshore and when we did it was less than pleasant. However the inshore fishing has been brilliant, plenty of big pollack, some nice ling and whiting and mackerel as well.

With the improvement in the weather this week, John is hoping to try for shark over the coming days, so watch this space for more exciting news.

Reasonable fishing on Loughs Conn & Cullin despite blustery conditions

A trout released by Peter Roche at Brackwansha Point

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Blustery and cold weather conditions combined resulted in a slack week on Loughs Conn and Cullin.  Saying that, the few anglers that did venture out reported some reasonable fishing. There are still some small hatches of Mayfly appearing in bays all over the lakes.  Best flies for the week included the Red Tag Green Peter, Mayfly patterns, Stimulators, Sedgehogs and Bumble patterns.

Paul Caslin, Ross and David Gray, Castlebar, had decent angling in South Conn last Saturday, with some good trout up to 2 lbs, all released on Bumble patterns.

Local Angler Peter Roche, Cloghans, had 7 trout to the boat, the best weighing 1.75 lbs all within 4 hours to a Red Tag Green Peter and a Stimulator. He was fishing Cloghans and the Brackwansha Shore, and all fish were released.

Oliver Dillon from Sligo had some good sport in Flannery’s Bay and along the Abbey Shore.  He reported 6 keepers to the net, the best weighing 2 lbs, all caught on Bumbles and all fish were released.

Pawel and 2 friends fished North Conn, along the islands outside Bog Bay and Woodford Island and had approximately 10 trout to the boat.  They also caught some Perch up to 3 lbs weight. All fish were caught on Bumbles and all fish were released.

Eric Traynor, Crossmolina & Sydney trolled North Conn with his daughters Ella and Ivy. Ella caught a small trout just over 1.25 lbs on a Mepps and Ivy caught caught a pike for 4 lbs also on a Mepps.

Great mixed fishing in west Clare

Ling

The weather up to now has made fishing difficult, but Luke Aston, who skippers the Clare Dragoon out of Carrigaholt, is lucky to have the option of more sheltered fishing in the Shannon Estuary. On days when they can’t get offshore, this provides great fishing for tope, bull huss and ray. Earlier this week, a couple of trips in the estuary provided a nice mix of species, including the above, and even a couple of spotted ray.

As the weather eased, offshore trips were more [possible, and a good mix of whitefish species were caught on the reefs, as well as many spurdog into high double figures.
