A few grilse on Currane but weather very bright

Vincent Appleby reports on the week’s fishing on the Waterville System:

6/7/2022 World famous Butlers Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie take all the Salmon headlines and for good reason, Kevin, from Boston Massachusetts USA caught a fine Grilse on the fly this morning while flyfishing with his Gillie.  Now we head upstream to Lough Currane, going by the post and Telegraphs the Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments this day. Wind NW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

7/7/2022 It was blazing saddles on Waterville lake this day, but this didn’t deter top Salmon and Sea Trout guide Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com taking his client out and catching a fine 5 lbs. Grilse on the troll.  Wind NNW light and variable.

8/7/2022 I can say without any fear of contradiction that renowned Currane Angler Mr. Andy Wishart caught a fine 5 lbs Grilse on the troll.

9/7/2022 Now today’s action came from the North Shore and at [email protected] Currane angler Mr. Michael Henry, while fishing with his Gillie, caught a fine Grilse on the troll. Weather bright and sunny all day, wind light and variable.

10/7/2022 As they said in Kerry today, we will make a point against Dublin at Croke Park and that they did in the semi-final so congratulations to Kerry, sadly the Currane anglers didn’t make their point in the fishing department but to be fair to the Currane anglers it was bright and sunny all day and very warm, followed by a light and variable wind from the SW.

11/7/2022 There was some great Salmon fly fishing out of the North Shore and at [email protected] renowned all round Currane Fly angler Mr. Michael Henry, while fly fishing with his Gillie, caught two cracking Salmon on the fly, weighing in at 5 ½ lbs and 4 ½ lbs. The picture tells the Currane story of the day. Wind SSE veered South light with good cloud cover.

12/7/2022 Straight to the action into the fly department, Liam, Joe, Dan, the Lads from Carlow had a good day today especially for Dan who caught his first Salmon on the fly while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com so congratulations to Dan, may it be the first of many. Now we head for the hired-out boat department of [email protected] Mr. Andy Wishart, caught a lightening fresh 5 lbs. Grilse on the troll. Wind light SW and veered NW later in the afternoon and just for the record there was light misty rain at times.

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Dutch anglers enjoy incredible fishing with Courtmacsherry Angling

Ling to 35lb were caught

Mark Gannon from Courtmacsherry Angling has had great luck with visiting Dutch anglers. This group had missed 2 fishing holidays with Mark due to the Covid pandemic but this week in lovely conditions they are making up for it.

The crew have caught over 40 Ling to 22lbs on the wrecks. They’ve had blue shark released at the side of the boat to 90 lbs, Pollack to 11 lbs, cod to 8lbs, Common Skate to 160 lbs for Dave (an Irish Specimen) and an Irish Specimen Ling of 35 lbs caught on the offshore reefs for Kees.

It’s still going well today with a large female common skate 2.02m with a wingspan of 1.64 m along with bull huss, conger and pollack.

Bass fishing has been good for the self drive anglers with fish up to 6lbs caught.

Coarse Anglers do Well at Melview Fishing Lodge Despite The Changing Weather Conditions.

Kevin Lyons reports on the week’s fishing at Melview Lodge:

Thomas from Dublin was back at Melview Fishing Lodge for his second visit and a spot of coarse fishing, and with no time to waste, it was straight out fishing. That evening the venue was prebaited at 35 yards, the following day produced some nice Hybrids, Roach and big Perch. Despite the ups and downs of the weather, Thomas decided to carry on prebaiting in the evenings on the same venue to see what it would produce. After losing some good Bream and Hybrids and the interruption of Pike coming to feed things went a little quiet. However a great few days of fishing had by Thomas, and he is looking forward to some winter Pike fishing with Kevin at Melview Fishing Lodge.

Tony, Graham and Bobby from the UK were over in Ireland for their annual fishing trip and this time decided to stay at Melview Fishing Lodge. On arrival, it was bags in the rooms and off to look at a couple of venues to fish. After a short session, it was in with the prebait and see what the next morning would produce for them. I was a little surprised how slow things started for them as they put in the time and work. The guys are very experienced when it comes to fishing in Ireland, so know things like this can happen. However, things did pick up a little for them over through the week and produced some nice Tench, Hybrids, Roach and small Bream. The guys don’t normally use keep nets but they did manage to get a couple of pictures for us, thanks for a fun week guys as I had lots of laughs and you were great company and hope to see you back in Ireland next year.

Spur of the moment trip puts Shock Waves on the specimen spurs…

Eddie Butler put his boat Shock Waves out on the water for a spur-of-the-moment trip off the Waterford coast recently and hit the jackpot with a big haul of spurdogs. Once the dogs started biting, they didn’t let up and the session finished with over 50 to the boat, including a number of specimens.

The lads also managed to land a few tope too, which all made for a busy day, and tired arms at the end of it!

Johnny McKinley took the honours with some ease on the 3rd Irish Feedermasters qualifier today in scorching Lough Muckno with close to 9kgs. The conditions were unfavourable, but section A presented a formidable battle with all the top 4 money winners emerging from Concra Lower.In 2nd place was Alan Larkin followed by Jordan Hall and Jim McAllister in that order.

Good bream in Belturbet for club anglers

With the September Belturbet festival looming, and the Belturbet Angling and Conservation Club determined to have the fishing closer to the town, some club members headed out on Sunday morning morning to a venue a short drive away.

It used to be a featured venue in the festival many years ago, although back then it was accessed from a different shore. After cutting out a few swims the anglers drew their pegs. Conditions were far from ideal – with very bright sunshine and only a light breeze. Top four on the pole and up to 20ft on some pegs on the tip.

Luckily club members were quickly into the fish, with Tony landing a 6lb bream after 20mins. Everyone caught well, with lots of roach and hybrids on the pole and the chance of monster bream on the tip. Needless to say we were impressed. Roger Baker did the best with a mixed bag and 9 bream that weighed 45lb on their own! Overall, a successful reconnaissance mission for the team.

Frantic fishing in the south east for Borough SAC

Stan Ryan of Borough SAC sent us in this report from the club’s recent competition off the east and south east coasts fishing with Wicklow Boat Charters:

Fishing down South was frantic. On Sunday alone, tope, bull huss, ray, smoothhound and dogfish were caught. A total of 75 fish were caught between five anglers. Fishing up North yielded one good tope, loads of dogfish and some smoothound.

The icing on the cake was a smoothie, 124cm long, caught by Graham Garvey who is on the Irish international team. To put the size of this fish in context, the biggest specimen Irish smoothhound caught by well known Dublin angler, John Hughes, was 124.5cm long and weighed 26.5lb.

Thanks to Kit Dunne and fellow skipper, Anthony,  for a great weekend.

Young Louth anglers catches cracking salmon on the Laune

Young Louth angler Julia O’Callaghan hit the jackpot on the river Laune this week when salmon fishing with her father. Julia, who is 15 years old, is an avid angler and hopes to study marine biology when she finishes school. She was fishing away with her spinning rod when a salmon suddenly engulfed her lure, and after a great battle, the salmon finally slipped over the net. It was tagged and then weighed, tipping the scales at 10lbs. A great fish for any angler. Well done Julia!

In other news from the area there were 6 salmon reported from Beat 2 of the River Laune all under 5lbs.  All tagged, caught by spinning and fly fishing.

Water levels are dropping, good fishing conditions.  Many anglers out fly fishing and trolling on the Killarney Lakes.

Plenty of species firsts for anglers down in Courtmacsherry

A couple of anglers were in touch to say they had a great time fishing in the Courtmacsherry area recently, where they had a number of species ‘firsts’. Brendan Harvey and his long-time fishing pal Anthony Behan were fishing from both boat and shore on their recent trip and first up was the boat session, where both lads landed their first-ever bull huss, including a nice 12-pounder for Anthony. Anthony also managed to land his first ever conger eel which made it a day to remember.

Next up was a session on the rocks where spinning with lures proved successful for pollack and also landed Harvey his first ever bass. It wasn’t a monster, but it’s always great to get your first one, and there are always bigger ones out there! Needless to say, the lads were thrilled with the fishing and are fired up for their next session.

Irish angling Update 🎣 08 July 2022

Following the recent rain the weather became dry again but dull and more than a little cool. There was enough water in the rivers to see some good lake and river reports coming in from around the country, but we are still seeing windy days that limit fishing for the charter boat and small boat anglers. Settled weather is promised though, so hopefully things will continue to improve…

Starting in the south this time, salmon angling on the Blackwater saw some great results last week once the levels came good after the recent flood. There are still plenty of bigger fish into double figures coming into the river and the grilse run has yet to kick off. It was a similar story from the Bandon where good numbers of bigger fish are running the river. Anglers on the Ilen in West Cork enjoyed some good fishing and again grilse are yet to hit in numbers. Grilse have shown up on Lough Currane and the Inny River though, and a few anglers, including some juniors, got in on the action. There were a few sea trout also reported from the main lake and higher up in the system. Anglers on the upper Caragh lakes were also getting some good sport with a fine trout of about 8lb reported from Lough Cloon.

There was no shortage of grilse at Galway and the Fishery reported around 400 fish for the month of June, average weight over 4lbs. The Erriff also saw a good number of grilse caught in June, particularly when the water suited. The high water that followed the rain at the end of June saw fishing take off on the Moy. Over 1000 salmon were caught in the Moy catchment for week ending 3rd July 2022.  Anglers are returning a fair portion of the fish and the East Mayo Anglers are holding a competition to reward Catch and Release anglers with monthly prizes. The Moy Estuary is also fishing very well and sea trout anglers are getting great sport. Moving to the other side of the country we have reports of some good salmon caught on the Boyne after the rains, and a few grilse too. More water is needed though as the levels have dropped again.

Trout anglers are reporting good fishing on the Nore where a good mix of hatches is keeping the trouts’ noses up and the anglers busy. On Loughs Conn and Cullin, a combination of blustery and cold weather conditions resulted in a slack week, but those who ventured out were rewarded well enough, all things considered.

We don’t have many coarse reports this week. But the two we have make good reading. The first qualifier for the NCFFI Method feeder championships was held on Gaulmoylestown Lake and the best weight topped 112lbs.  Meanwhile, the MadCap anglers in Athlone fished a competition that saw 96lb of bream take top spot.

Newbridge anglers fish a novel 30 hour event each summer. This year over 90 pike were landed. Fishing was patchy but some nice fish into double figures were caught. Meanwhile in Clare a junior angler out with his dad and Anglers Paradise had great fishing with perch to 35cm and pike to 112cm. Having only caught small canal fish before the youngster set the bar high for future PBs!

As mentioned in the opening paragraph winds have not made things easy for sea anglers. Luke Aston out of Carrigaholt managed to get shelter in Shannon estuary and had a good mix of species and even a couple of spotted ray. Charter boat skipper John Fleming on Glaway Bay has found conditions at sea unpleasant and the fishing difficult. However the inshore fishing has been brilliant, plenty of big pollack, and some nice ling. And now the weather is looking to settle shark fishing is back on the agenda.

Massive congratulations to the senior men’s Ireland shore fishing team, who won the Home Nations Championship. A good win made all the better for beating the favourites on their home patch.

Finally, the On the Fly Podcast is back this week with an episode that focuses on fly fishing for bass – well worth a listen!

And lastly, over 36,000 patrols were undertaken by Inland Fisheries Ireland officers last year, boosted by our new Mobile Support Unit and sea-going fleet.  As a result of the patrols, there were 103 prosecutions for fisheries-related offences last year and staff seized 1,261 illegal fishing items, including nearly 14 kilometres of illegal nets. Officers also issued 293 fixed charge penalty notices and gave 715 cautions under fisheries legislation.

And now the weather…

The outlook is for high pressure to dominate bringing mostly warm and dry weather with a mix of cloud and sunny spells over the next few days. Then, rain or drizzle is likely for a time on Tuesday. Before that though you can expect some properly hot weather with temperatures of 25-27°C expected over the weekend and Monday. Winds will be mostly south or south westerly and generally light enough.
