Pike angling guide Kevin Lyons reports on some recent pike angling by his guests at Melview Lodge

French anglers Stephane, Nicolas, Manu and Julien had an excellent fishing trip bring to the boat 224 Pike and we won’t talk about the ones that got away. They cast both hard and soft lures catching Pike to fish 107cm and losing a few bigger fish. The guys are no strangers to Melview Fishing Lodge but had to put previous trips on hold due to the covid situation and travel restrictions. But it was worth the wait.

These guys are so keen, they were out fishing for a couple of hours minutes after arriving. The weather conditions were a bit up and down for the their stay but they just got on with the fishing.

Well done guys and great to see you back here once again, and thank you for a great week of laughing and joking and look forward to seeing you all again soon.

ALL FISH RETURNED UNHARMED.

Salmon anglers enjoy early success on Barrow, Nore and Suir

On the 17th of March the Salmon season opened on the Nore, Suir and Barrow. The opening week seen unfavourable condition on all three system with high water levels effecting any chances of good angling & hope of an early run Spring Salmon.

When the water levels dropped back the rivers came into good order for angling, with these more favourable conditions there was reports of a few early Salmon been caught on both the river Nore and Suir.

Salmon ready for release

As the end of March approached there were reports of good Salmon fishing on all three systems with a few exceptional Salmon being caught. One angler reported catching a Salmon of around 30lbs from the River Nore and there have been reports of few more Salmon in the mid-teens been caught on all three systems.

This early run of Spring salmon on all three systems is very encouraging to see and would give one hope and optimism for a good Salmon season to come.

Mixed fishing on Conn wets best but Sedges hatching

Not many Anglers ventured out at the start of the week as cooler than normal temperatures prevailed with some squally North-eastern winds and eased off towards the weekend. On Saturday, Peter Roche, Cloghans and Tony Walsh, Co. Wicklow, fished in flat calm conditions along Brackwansha shoreline. Some hatching sedges were spotted over generally a very quiet day and they rose a few fish and boated one and returned, for just over 1 pound to a small size 18 sedge.

Ian Wise, Enniscoe, boated 2 American Anglers for 2 days in North Conn trolling for Pike and Salmon. However, they caught three trout, best 1.5 lbs all on silver and blue Toby’s. All fish returned.

2 Anglers from Longford, fishing out of Murphy’s boat hire in Massbrook, had 5 trout between them all on Green Peters and claret Dabblers and 4 released at Sand House.

James Callaghan and Eamon Barrett from Clare had 6 trout between them on Peters and Fiery Brown, best 1.5 lbs in Castlehill Bay.

Sean Callaghan, Ardagh and friend Oisin Cosgrove, Cloghans had 2 small pike and 1 trout for 1.25 lbs while trolling for Salmon at the mouth of the Deel.

Brendan Murphy, Cloghans, had a good trout for near 3 lbs on a Black Pennell near Cormorant Rocks.

More salmon on the Finn

Perfection

While many rivers down south were getting showers, Donegal received a deluge of rain last week, with big floods on the spate rivers. The Finn always benefits from fresh water, and with spring fish starting to appear, fishing has benefited too.

After Chris Adams landed the first fish off Glenmore waters last week, two more fish between 9 and 13lbs were caught and released the same day.

Warren Campbell is a prolific salmon angler and he was off the bus too, with a lovely silver spring fish. It is great to see good fish handling, keeping fish in the water except for a brief photo, and released quickly in great condition.

Perfection

More fish have been reported since, including this lovely fish for another angler, once again displaying great care for the fish.

Keep them wet. Great fish handling makes for successful catch and release.

Paddy was another angler off the bus for the year, with yet another beauty. Check out the video below of a perfect release.

Finally, another Chris had met and lost 3 fish over the previous week, but managed to land the 4th on Tuesday.

4th time lucky for Chris

Killybegs Mariners and Howth SAC enjoy a great friendly match in Sligo

Killybegs Mariners hosted Howth Sea Angling Club last weekend for an innovative inter-club competition on Streedagh beach, Co. Sligo. Check this out for a great report on how it all went down.

A super day out yesterday at our 1st inter club competition Killybegs Mariners s.a.c versus Howth SAC from Dublin with the venue being the sun kissed Streedagh beach in Sligo famous for its Spanish Armada shipwrecks under the sweeping Benbulbin mountain.
Such a fun day was had as the banter got going in the car park as angler’s eyed the lovely surf conditions on an airless spring day. But fair play to the Howth lads that came bearing gifts and made sure we all had some east coast ragworm and spare lug or sandeel before the start. Not often that happens in competitions. Also an ample supply of chocolates and pens cheers lads.
Some great fish were caught as 36 rods lined the beach including flounders of 35cm for Siert Schuls (H) and Sean Harte (M). Grahame Crooks (H) and Tom Brennan (H) had lovely 36cm flats with the best being 39cm for Joe McPeake. Mariners Werner Labushcagne and Pat Cunningham both had great Turbot of 33cm and 37cm respectively.
A fine turbot that went 37cm on the measuring stick
There were plenty of small turbot in close but it wasn’t easy getting them to beat the magic minimum size of 20cm but a nice fishing of flounders, turbot and a 43cm seatrout boosted Mariners Noel Kennedy to the overall win (€140) and take the glory home to the hills for this year.
A nice sea trout capped a fine competition for Noel Kennedy
Close in 2nd place ((€88) was Siert Schuls of Howth.
3rd was Grahame Crookes (€70)of Howth
4th was Joe Mc Peake (€52)of Howth
5th was John Heath (€35) of Mariners
6th was Sean Harte (€35) of Mariners
Longets flat Joe McPeake Howth (€70) 39cm flounder
Longest round Noel Kennedy (€70) 43cm seatrout
Winning mixed club pair was Dave Godwin of Howth and Noel Kennedy of Mariners (€70)
Lucky peg draw was won by John Cunningham of Mariners (€70)
Double shot of turbot
Winning club score was a narrow win for the Mariners with 1162pts to Howth 1069pts.
Well done to all that helped organise the event which was run very efficiently especially Noel Kennedy and Derek Gillespie doing the peg draws the night before online and totting up all the scores and prizes on the laptops along with all the organising for weeks in advance. Also Kieran McGowan and Sean O Donnell getting over early and pegging the beach. To all the anglers that travelled from Dublin on both clubs and Donegal to fish and generously donated prizes and gifts that made the day what it was a very well done.
We won’t brag too much and look forward to the event happening again so until next time, tight lines

No bass but an enjoyable outing for Lisdoonvarna Fanore SAC

Lisdoonvarna Fanore Sac held an early season bass competition on Fanore beach, north Clare last Saturday evening. A glorious evening on a beautiful beach provided plenty of enjoyment, but the elusive bass were a no-show.

It’s still early season for bass, and the water probably needs to warm up a bit before they appear in numbers. Good sport was still had with flounder and sea trout showing up on the evening, and any fine evening on Fanore beach is always enjoyable!

Pollock & wrasse for Blue Shark Angling, Galway

John Fleming of Blue Shark Angling, Galway reports that mackerel are scarce in Galway but that pollack are responding to baits when conditions come good. Last Saturday started off slowly for anglers onboard his boat, the Brazen Hussy II, but once the tide turned pollack started to come on the take. Iascaire Feeder Club – round 3 results

The Iascaire Feeder Fishing Club held their 3rd Spring League match on Sunday at  Concra wood on Lough Muckno.

The whips and poles were out in force as there were lots of smaller fish in the swims throughout the day to keep the competitors busy with a bite every drop. Even though the stamp was small it was an enjoyable day of fishing and there were some decent bags weighed in.

The top 3 of the day were:

  1. Vaidas Jagela 9.780kg
  2. Aidas Zilinskas 8.500kg
  3. Saulius Marciukaitis 4.830kg

The league will continue on Lough Gowna in 2 weeks.
