PB Trout For Robbie On Corrib

While Corrib has been fairly quiet for reports of late, we hear that mayfly and sedge fishing picked up in July. The heatwave at the end of July put a stop to that, but the cooler weather of the last two weeks has improved fishing again. The last few weeks of the season will hopefully see good sedge and olive fishing.

Robbie Thomson was out fishing with angling guide Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge (www.corribangling.com), and he sent us in this photo of his personal best trout. A fine fish of 5lbs 6.5oz taken on wetfly. Well done Robbie!

Porbeagle “bycatch” makes up for sixgill no-show!

Skipper Luke Aston is a busy man these days, with very few days free until October, but some availability for bluefin tuna and whitefish, which can be very good then. This week his guests had shark on their minds. A try for the monster sixgill shark proved unsuccessful, with the big boys proving elusive on the day. A few good conger showed, but the real story was the “bycatch” of 5 porbeagle sharks and one blue shark. Porbeagles are outnumbering blues this year in many locations – a good sign of a resurgence in their population, but also perhaps worrying to see so few blues about.

A good blue shark for this angler
A porbeagle comes alongside
The short powerful build of the porbeagle shows why they are such a hard fighting fish

Other trips over the week targeted whitefish and mixed species, with good pollack, coalfish and rd gurnard coming aboard.

And another one
Red gurnard – the robin of the sea
Good coalie fishing too
Eek! Something big, and toothy, intercepted this pollack on the way up!

Pike coming back on the feed on Lough Derg

Clients of TJ’s Angling Centre enjoyed a few good days fishing Lough Derg last week. With the lake cooling down after the high temperatures of July, it was good to see the pike back on the feed.

Tungsten Warriors win top spot in hotly contested Thomastown Fly Fishing Competition

Avid fly anglers from far and wide made a beeline to the River Nore in Thomastown last weekend to participate in Ireland’s foremost river trout fishing competition the Thomastown Fly Fishing Competition. The competition is run in a pairs format over two days of fishing, with each pair allocated a stretch of river to fish during a session. Thirty teams competed in this year’s competition and the Tungsten Warriors eventually came out on top having led the field from day one.

Over €770,000 awarded to 17 projects to support fisheries conservation across Ireland

Minister Ryan welcomes funding announcement for conservation projects in Carlow, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Mayo, Wexford, Westmeath and Wicklow

Inland Fisheries Ireland, the state agency with responsibility for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish and habitats, is awarding funding to 17 projects in 11 counties under the ‘Habitats and Conservation Scheme 2021’.

Under two separate funds, the Salmon and Sea Trout Rehabilitation, Conservation and Protection Fund and the Midland Fisheries Fund, eligible angling clubs, commercial fishermen and fishery owners were invited to apply for financial assistance to support fisheries conservation projects in their local areas.

€774,000 in funding for 17 projects has been approved so far this year, going to projects based in Carlow, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Mayo, Wexford, Westmeath and Wicklow. Examples include:

  • construction of rock ramp passageways to make it easier for fish to migrate upstream and downstream of impassable weirs
  • improvements to water quality by installing fences to stop livestock from entering the river and providing water pumps and troughs for livestock to minimise agricultural impacts
  • encouraging wild river regeneration by planting native Irish trees and shrubs along riverbanks in combination with fencing
  • enhancement of spawning and nursery habitats for salmon and sea trout
  • research to inform and improve national management decisions around sea trout
  • carrying out catchment-focused feasibility studies, habitat management plans, aquatic invasive species plans and environmental assessments to improve river habitats and species
  • soft engineering works to help regenerate the land and water adjacent to rivers

Financial assistance under the Salmon and Sea Trout Rehabilitation, Conservation and Protection Fund (SSTRCPF total of €744,326) is generated by the sale of salmon and sea trout angling licences and commercial fishing licences in Ireland. The Midlands Fisheries Fund (MFF total of €29,778) is financed through contributions from permit income, received through the Midlands Fisheries Group permit area. To be eligible, applicants to the SSTRCPF must have purchased a valid salmon and sea trout angling licence or a commercial fishing licence or for the MFF, hold a current Midlands Fisheries Group permit.

Further allocations of funding may be announced later in the year and the full list of projects can be seen at  www.fisheriesireland.ie

Red letter day for tuna anglers on the Kiwi Girl

The smile says it all!

Tuna fishing is really warming up in Donegal Bay at the moment. Licensed Tuna CHART angling boat the Kiwi Girl had their best day of the season so far on Saturday, but that was beaten again on Sunday. 10 bluefin tuna were brought to the boat and tagged over the weekend.

As skipper Declan says “It was start to finish action with the fish up for it and (it has to be said ) a slick team running the gear, everything that was put out got trashed to bits , well done to Paddy and Alison taking 3 fish each, the skipper even got a go today!

10 Bluefin Tuna in total for the weekend tagged and released
Things are beginning to heat up in Donegal Bay!”

Hard work!
A fine bluefin tuna comes alongside for tagging.

Another monster fish to the boat!

Good fishing on the Inny and more fish off Currane

The Ledge, Lough Currane
The Ledge, Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

Francie O’Shea RIP

It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of local mechanic Mr. Francie O’Shea RIP, of The Garage Waterville and Cahersiveen and I can say without any fear of contradiction, Francie will be sadly missed by the Currane Anglers and for good reason. Francie kept their outboard motors in good nick over the years and had a great interest in the Salmon and Sea Trout Fishing which is not surprising because his Father Jack O’Shea RIP was a great Gillie and Fishery Officer so you can say Francie was well into fishing when growing up in Waterville. So, on behalf of the Currane anglers and all the Good People of Waterville and Cahersiveen and all of Kerry we send our Sincere Sympathies to his wife Agnes, son & daughters Elaine, Brian, Áine & Triona, brothers Timothy & Kevin, sister Annmarie, grandchildren, sisters-in-law, relatives, neighbours & friends.

Angling Reports

9/8/21 Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front. Now head for the Inny C&R Anglers and by all accounts there were two Salmon caught and released. Wind WNW light, followed by the odd shower

10/8/21 The Currane Sea and Brown Trout drifters caught a few fish to their credit. Now we head for the River Inny, where there was one Salmon caught on the spin and released. On that note, we sadly head for a poaching article.

11/8/21 Waterville Fishery was all quiet on all fronts this day. Wind W and veered SW in the afternoon, light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

12/8/21 The Wind took control of the Currane Anglers, so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that they converted very quickly to the C&R Inny anglers and there were a few successes and to be precise, two on the fly and one on the spin. Staying with the Inny, Met Éireann are forecasting some rain for the Inny this Saturday, as the chart shows. Wind WSW fresh to strong with reasonable cloud cover, followed by the odd shower.

13/8/21 There was a few Trout caught by the Currane drifters today. Now we head for the C&R Inny, five caught, four on the fly and one on the spin.

14/8/21 We start with the Currane Anglers, there were four boats out, there was one Salmon caught and a few Trout caught on the drift. Now we head for the C&R River Inny, as you can imagine My Noble Inny Anglers were waiting and anticipating the flood, it came early this evening, there was one Salmon reported caught on the spin so far, but you can take it as read there were a few caught this evening. I can say one thing on today’s proceedings, if you are a Liverpool or Man UTD and a Waterville Fishery supporter the results were good on both sides of the water. Wind SSE light to fresh and overcast with rain from midmorning.

15/8/21 There was some great action on the Waterville Fishery today, we start on the Commeragh River, one angler caught a couple of Salmon and a few Trout and that’s not surprising with a good flood coming down the Commeragh. Now we head down stream to Lough Currane, there were four boats out, as of yet the phone is all quiet in all departments. Now we head for the Inny and there was plenty of action on the fly and on the spin, you could say the Inny Anglers were well satisfied with today’s manipulations in the C&R department. Wind NNW fresh to strong.

Life lessons on the River Nore

Brothers David and Rares look quite proud of Dad Marcel's sparkling fresh grilse. Catch Photo Release #CPRSavesFish

Dan O’Neill, fishery manager at Mount Juliet, sent in this heartwarming report from the River Nore.

With more and more children getting involved in angling it’s very important that we teach and guide them towards the practicing of safe catch and release in order to protect our future stocks.

Salmon angling can leave many a very accomplished angler scratching his head , I have many close friends that fish for salmon and I must say what keeps me interested is the casting and watching the fly line loop unfold in the air , in fact when I do salmon fish I end up not leaving the fly in long enough or rushing the glide as I want to get to my next cast.

Two young anglers came to me with their dad over the past few days and wanted to know the biggest fish in the river. When the question was asked they looked at each other then back at me as if they knew the answer between them, I had a feeling David and his brother Rares had discussed this before, perhaps even in the car on there way to the river!

Once I had replied to the two brothers they looked at dad Marcel and asked could they go for a salmon to which he obliged. Walking along the river I could hear Marcel talking to both boys explaining the understanding of water and the importance it holds, going through different tips and tricks that were handed down to him, also explaining the importance of fish care and how to look after them which is a very important lesson and best shown to the up and coming anglers of all ages.

Their lesson was just underway when Marcel lifted into this beautiful grilse , which he then could complete his lesson to the boys in the importance of barbless hooks and proper handling of fish during the unhooking and releasing stage.

Well done to both boys – here in a picture that no doubt will rise many times in during there angling careers, well done to dad Marcel also!

Amazing sea trout in Donegal

A truly magnificent sea trout for Johnny Byrne. Catch Photo Release #CPRSavesFish

It was a red letter day for Johnny Byrne from Killybegs recently, or perhaps silver is more appropriate. While out lure fishing for bass, he hooked into the fish of a lifetime. This monster sea trout promptly stripped the reel, giving a great fight before finally coming ashore. Measuring in at 70cm, and estimated by Johnny at 7-8lbs (we think more!) the sea trout is one of the most impressive fish we have seen in a while. Even better, the fish was swiftly released again after a quick photo. Johnny is one of the most prolific shore anglers we know, putting in many hours fishing and exploring new marks, and fish like this are a reward for all that hard work. Well done Johnny!

That followed hot on the heels of winning the top club angler prize in the latest Killybegs Mariners competition, held at Narin on Friday night. Johnny landed two good bass of 42 nd 50cm. Top prize on the night was taken by visiting angler (not eligible for club angler prize) John Marshall, with a catch of mackerel, weaver and flatfish. Second was another visiting angler, Marko De Kleer. The longest flatfish prize was shared by Gavin Dorrian and Daragh McGuinness with a 28cm flounder each.
