Salmon fishing picks up on Munster Blackwater after rains

salmon
On the Blackwater Salmon Fishery

August is notorious as being a “sulky” month for Salmon angling, with many Salmon browning up. However, with the heavy rainand rising river levels late last week salmon angling has taken off again upstream of Fermoy in the Killavullen & Mallow areas.

Jason Corcoran tells us they had some fantastic fishing at Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery on August 10th. There were salmon showing on all beats with a total of 13 fish hooked and 7 making it to the net. Some of the anglers getting fish to the bank were Michael Dooley, Stanko, Morrie but the top angler of the day goes to Kenny Walsh with a fantastic fish of 23.5lbs on the fly. All fish were released to continue on their precious journey.

At Fortwilliam it was a similar story and Michàel Keneally had a great day out guided by Chris Coady on the Glenmore beat. John Paul Williamson landed 3 fish best of 9lbs  off the Bishops beat and Ian Carter landed 2 fish off the Ellis beat. Once again, all beats fished.

The fishing continued on the 11th with a nice start to the morning. John Paul Williamson continuing a cracking couple of days of fishing with abeautiful hen fish of about 14lbs which he released to let her continue on her journey.

Glenda Powel also reports great fishing on the Blackwater Salmon Fishery and thre were more salmon caught and released yesterday. With all the fish about and the water, it’s no surprise that rods on the fishery are being snapped up. But it’s well worth enquiring to see whats available…

Marcin Kantor put together this video of a great day on the river late last season. On the day he managed to hook 8 salmon on the fly while landing most of them. Really gets across the excitment of salmon fishing. You can follow his fishing adventures here: Marcin Kantor – Offbeat Angling

Finally, Eileen Carroll Murphy in the Macroom office tells us that some excellent Sea Trout are being caught in the waters between the mouth of the Araglin River near Kilworth, Co. Cork and Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, however very few anglers are targeting this species

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Bandon River near Inishannon
Bandon River near Inishannon

FOR WEEK ENDING SUNDAY 8TH AUGUST 2021

The Bandon river remained low with the past two weeks and the rain we got made little or no difference to levels. There are fish coming in on every tide and there are plenty of fish in the pools on the lower river. Many of these are stale now and reluctant to take.  Water temperatures have dropped a little and there are a few fish being reported on shrimp and worms. Most of these were grilse but there was the occasional bigger fish reported including a salmon of 15lbs taken on worm.

Not many salmon for Lee anglers with low water

Approximately 15 salmon landed for the last week mostly from club waters, fish to 9lbs.

Prime silver for West Cork Bass

bass
74cm bass for David Norman

David Norman of West Cork Bass has been out after dark hunting for that elusive 70cm+ fish and his persistence has paid off with 74cm of prime West Cork silver released fit and healthy to grow even bigger.

David’s thoughts on this one were as follows:

Really pleased with this one after what has been an extra challenging season so far. The ever reliable @pirate_lures Bass Treats doing the business yet again.

A lot of effort goes into the capture of these fish at the present time by anyone who consistently catches them, but ultimately these bigger bass can show up pretty much whenever they decide to and the angler needs to be 100% ready at all times.
Strong/sharp hooks, good knots, correct tackle – line/leader weight, a rod/reel with a suitable amount of power that can help you present your chosen lure perfectly, lure selection itself is of course massive, drag setting etc. All of these factors need to be spot on for the conditions which change as you move around. An understanding of the shoreline structure/hazards and the use of watercraft is also vital, as is having a plan on how/where to land a big fish if it does come along.
Then come the tactics and basic skills, when guiding I am constantly pointing out and reiterating the finer details and often for the whole session which I am more than happy to do. When it hopefully all comes together, knowing how to handle/photograph the fish to release it in good condition and lastly (in fact firstly) staying safe yourself throughout the whole process ready to do it all again, hopefully soon!

Tuna ticking over for Wild Atlantic Way Angling

Tuna Mick was out for a few days of ‘normal’ fishing last week but on Sunday he had the opportunity to have a scout around for the Bluefin in Donegal Bay. When it rains it pour and the Leah-C had a double hook up for Karl and Killian from Dublin, who managed to do a great job of keeping the fish apart and we got both. A nice pair of 275lb and 400lb.

On the previous Thursday Killian and Shane Bonner had another successful day out with a fine first fish of 240lb for the younger Bonner!

Tuna number two for Deep Blue

Deep Blue, one of the licenced CHART Tuna tagging boats for 2021 and skippered by Adrian Molloy of Tuna.ie, has been out after some early bluefin in Donegal Bay. They got off the mark at the end of July with a fine 700lb fish and followed that up this week with anglers John and Chris who landed a powerful fish estimated to be 400lb based on a length measurement of 86inches.

In the heat of battle

Not one of the Adrian’s biggest fish to ‘Deep Blue’ but, even for a skipper as experienced as Adrian, he admitted that this powerful fish gave him a bit of a runaround! Jonty McBride was behind the lense for the fine photos.

Successful International Angling Week in North Clare

A nice spurdog off the rocks for Mike Curtin

Lisdoonvarna Fanore Sea Angling Club held their annual International Angling Week last week, with a number of competitions held at various venues in north Clare over the week. Conditions varied from warm sunshine to torrential rain, but everyone no doubt enjoyed themselves. Fishing was good, with everyone catching, and some very nice fish caught.

A nice wrasse for this young angler

Angler of the Week, and not for the first time, was Kinvara man Mike Curtin. No stranger to the prizes here and elsewhere, Mike is a top competition angler and knows this part of the coastline very well. He even had a nice spurdog among his fish.

Junior Angler of the Week was Mike’s son, Matthew. No doubt a chip off the old block going on this result, and one to watch for the future. Well done Matthew!

The week culminated in the club’s 60th annual competition at Black Head. Results were as follows:

Heaviest Fish: Joe Byrne, Wexford
Most Fish: Joe Ryan, Wexford
Greatest weight: James Linnane, Shannon
Best Lady: Eithne Hartley, Galway
Best Juvenile: Matthew Curtin, Kinvara.

Well done to all, and hopefully next year Covid will be a distant memory and the overseas anglers will be back in force.

Killybegs Mariners think tank at town pier

The Killybegs Mariners decided to hit the town pier with some small lures and a fish tank last week to highlight the amazing array of different species present in the harbour – a great idea which also highlighted the excellent water quality in the area.

All sorts of species were caught, including grey gurnard, ballan wrasse, poutings, mackerel, rock goby, black goby, whiting, codling and pollack, and each got to spend a short time in the tank for all to see – some of them feature in the slideshow below.

A great way to let uninitiated locals see what lies beneath…

Club member Michael also had a memorable offshore trip when he managed to set a club record for the not often caught red bandfish. This unusual fish lives in burrows in the sand and they feed by sticking their bodies out of their burrows to catch zooplankton and whatever else passes by. [Ed: We rarely get reports of Red Bandfish so it is our Catch of the Week winner.]

Bluefin fishing hotting up in Donegal

We mentioned Killybegs Fishing Trips last week, one of the licenced CHART Tuna tagging boats for 2021, who kicked off their Bluefin Tuna season last week with US travel writer Anietra Hamper landing a fine fish of 630lb aboard the Fiona Tee. Anietra was accompanied by Ian Henderson and Tom Armitage and all three put in the hours in some poor conditions over the 4 days of fishing. Skipper Michael gave us some more info on the trip this week:

Anietra plays her fish

On day 1 the weather was terrible in the morning but improved for the 2nd half of the day and it was in the afternoon that they had their first hook up at around 10am. Anietra did everything right in terrible conditions to bring the huge 630lb bluefin alongside but they did not get much action after that.

Anietra’s bluefin ready to be tagged

Day 2 weather was nearly too good in terms of conditions and there were plenty of signs of fish but no takes. Day 3 and the weather again was very good, as were all the signs but things ended in heart break. They had their first hook up at about 1.00pm but unfortunately lost this fish (hook-up video below), then a 2nd hook up at about 4.00pm but unfortunately lost this fish as well with nothing else afterwards. On day 4 the weather was very nasty and unfortunately there were no hook ups.

It is only early days yet as far as tuna season goes and things will only improve from here in terms of numbers of fish present in Irish waters.
