Dry Mayfly & Olive patterns doing the trick on Conn

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Lough Conn…

Trout angling was not as productive as salmon angling in the Moy catchment!  There are still some Mayfly present in small hatches in sheltered bays. A lot of the trout this week were caught on dry Mayflies and other Olive patterns. Over half the fish reported were caught in deeper water and a significant amount of weed has started to show in some shallow bays.

Johnny Warren from Crossmolina had a good 2 lbs. trout on a dry Bumble Olive in Pump House Bay or as it is officially known, “Kent’s Pool”.  Eddie Coleman from Foxford had a 2 lbs. trout in the same bay on a dry Olive. They all reported a good few smaller fish released.

Peter Roche had a 1.75 lbs. trout in Gallaghers Bay to a dry Mayfly and just a few smaller trout to the boat, all released. Peter found that fish were not rising freely and had no action on wet flies.

At Brackwansha, a party of four from Wicklow organised by Brian Quinn had some fair fishing over three days. They had 11 keepers to the boat with a few smaller trout also, all released.  The trout were mostly caught on dry Bumbles with two on a Green Peter. They stayed locally in Sandy Bay House, where Maura Gallagher looked after them and they commented “great rooms, but also an excellent cook”. Maura can be contacted on +353 m(0)86 0856187.

Murphy’s Boat Hire had 2 groups out angling from Counties Donegal and Clare. They fished all the bays in south Conn and between them they had approximately 16 trout to the boat, all released. Two anglers also brought in two small grilse while trolling along Victoria Point.

Stan Pitrzyk with a trout from Tolan’s Bay before releasing

Stan Pitrzyk from Sligo had a lovely trout for just over 4 lbs. on a Stucki spoon in Tolan’s Bay, released again, and caught a 3.5 lbs. grilse trolling in the River Deel which was also released.

Great week on the Moy with over 300 salmon reported

Daniel Mc Carthy, Athy, releasing a salmon at the Ridge Pool

Kevin O’Boyle reports from the River Moy…

River Moy Angling Report week ending 20/06/21

Yet another cool week in the west, with temperatures only rising to 14° Celsius and at times feeling like 12° Celsius.  The northerly and easterly winds prevailed for the week and water levels dropped marginally over the week. However, a very good week for the Moy with 316 Salmon reported from its various fisheries.

The Moy Fishery recorded 75 fish for the week, mostly grilse caught on the Ridge Pool.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 30 grilse for the week, 10 of which were caught on Sunday alone, mostly caught on the worm.

Mount Falcon Fishery reported 3 salmon for the week, all caught on the fly, best weighing 8 lbs.

A salmon caught on the fly returned at Mount Falcon on the River Moy

Coolcronan Fishery had 2 salmon for the week, both grilse, one on the prawn and one on the worm.

Roy Buckley reports 2 grilse from Byrne’s Fishery for the week.

Armstrong’s Fishery had 9 salmon for the week, and George Armstrong informs that anglers can purchase an all-day permit for €20 at Tiernan Brothers, Foxford or contact George himself on +353 (0)87 2801640.

Gannon’s Fishery had 5 salmon for the week, the best weighing 12.2 lbs., caught by Davy Mc Kee on the prawn.

Granville Nesbitt reports that the Foxford Fishery had a very busy week with 52 salmon reported caught, the best for 13 lbs. caught on the prawn.

Increased numbers of anglers visiting Foxford Salmon Anglers’ waters meant a good rise in catches with 56 salmon reported caught for the week. A decent percentage of these were released. Foxford Salmon Anglers reported plenty of fresh grilse running the system and the most popular method was bubble and fly.

Cloongee Fishery had 39 salmon for the week. Stephen Lyons from Galway had a good fish on the fly for 8 lbs. Thierry Coulm and guests had 35 salmon for the week on different beats averaging 4 lbs. and released 30 out of the 35 fish. Thierry himself had 17 of these with 15 released and commented that “the Moy is magic!”

Paul Mc Grath, Meelick, releasing a 9 lbs. salmon in East Mayo Anglers waters

East Mayo Anglers had 30 fish for the week of which 22 were released. The heaviest fish was caught by Paul Mc Grath, Meelick, for 9 lbs. on the fly, who had a few for the week.

Good numbers of sea trout and salmon up to 13 lbs. on Carrowmore

Glenn Woods with a Carrowmore salmon which was released

Carrowmore Lake – Angling Update –  June 21st

Declan Foley reports…

Despite the relatively poor angling conditions (mostly because of wind) the lake has seen good angling with numbers of sea trout entering the lake which have been caught up to and over 2 lbs. weight. Best salmon caught recently on the lake weighed 13 lbs. and was caught by Martin Ryan. Glen Woods also had a few fish. Other successful anglers included B. Seymour, J. Burns, M. Gallagher, D. Keogh, J. Mcarthy, M. Reuland and M. Corway

A happy James Burns with another fine Carrowmore salmon

Most of the fish caught were returned safely with a very high percentage of anglers this year releasing fish. Well done to all!

Mackerel get the predators feeding in Clare

The Carrigaholt boats are certainly having a good season, with plenty of species coming aboard, including specimen fish of several species so far. Mackerel have been plentiful, with a lot of big fish through them, great for bait!

Clare Dragoon

Luke Aston had Andy and James out for the first sixgill shark hunt of the year. Although they did hook one, it was on lighter gear aimed at skate and they were unable to get it to the boat. They did enjoy some great sport, however. Bull huss to over specimen size came aboard.

Bull huss are a great hard-fighting fish to target
Another fine huss to the boat for James

There was a nice mix of fish caught, including some good conger, and Andy even had a rare catch for an angling boat – a megrim.

A rare megrim for Andy

Luke also reported good mixed species on the coast north of Loop Head, with plenty of whitefish hunting the mackerel shoals.

A fine ling for this angler
A very decent pollack

Lady Gwen

Fellow skipper Sean Maguire, of the Lady Gwen, also reported great fishing for his guests. Mackerel are easy to find and are really attracing the predators at the moment, even cod putting in an appearance.

A nice cod to the boat

Another cod for this angler

Another group were focussed on light rod tactics, and enjoyed great sport targeting pollack.

Calmer conditions bring Moy Estuary sea trout back on the take

Leinster Pike Anglers out in force for angling comp

The Leinster Pike Anglers report on their most recent pike competition:

We held our second competition yesterday after lockdown. Once again it was great to catch up with everyone. There was a good turnout and we fished a river from 10 am to 5 pm. The forecasted rain never showed and there were a few burned faces at the weigh-in.
Fishing was slow and patchy for most…but a couple of anglers found some hotspots and Mark Kiernan’s persistence paid off with 20 fish landed for a bag of 50lb 7oz and a clear overall winner…the podium places were more tightly contested and closer with Dougie Robinson pipping second place with 9 fish for 31.4 getting ahead of Tommy Coffey who also managed 9 fish for a bag weight of 28.2.
Very well done lads and great banter as usual.
The biggest thing I managed to pull from the river was Jay Cooke who got stuck in the boggy margin….but great to see the heaviest fish of the day going to Patrick Nolan 7lb 10oz and his first trip with the club…Well done Patrick.
1st…..Mark Kiernan 20 fish 50lb 7oz
2nd…Dougie Robinson 9 fish 3lb 4oz
3rd…Tommy Coffey 9 fish 28lb 2oz
Heaviest fish Patrick Nolan 7lb 10oz

Coarse matches starting to kick off now restrictions have been lifted.

The NCFFI report that competition coarse angling is starting to kick off as more matches are being held around the country:

“Over 75 anglers were pleased to return to competitive angling sport at two open competitions that took place at the weekend.
The ERNE Anglers Festival saw 46 anglers fish the Roslea Lake cluster in County Fermanagh. The event was won by Jack Tisdall, 17.110kg with joint runners up Philip Jackson and Simon Huthwaite 11.090kg.
CM Lakelands Feeder Club headed to Lough Garadice in Country Leitrim for their two day event won by Cavan angler Richard Pratt with 7.740kg and runner-up Seamus Winters, 6.560kg
Both events were fished in bright sunshine, with the larger venue namely Lough Garadice, very busy with other water users.

A salmon fishing experience – lose one, catch one

Marcin Kantor is back with his first salmon of 2021…

Marins’s notes: Salmon fishing in Ireland is something I wanted to do for a long time, and I am absolutely loving it! While salmon fishing can be excellent, it usually comes with more blanks than not and plenty of waiting too. When Salmon hits the fly, however, it’s an experience like no other. Here is my fishing on the Blackwater and getting catching my first salmon of 2021 after a run of blanks. But the day wasn’t plain sailing… In the process, I have been learning new Spey casting methods, namely the Snap-T Spey Cast you will see in the video and also the Single Spey in the form of an Underarm Single Spey Cast.

Currane salmon not taking, few sea trout caught

The Ledge, Lough Currane
The Ledge, Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

17/6/21 Good to see a few boats out this day but sadly only one boat reported two Sea trout to his rod. On the Salmon front all quiet on all fronts. Wind North and variable with reasonable cloud at times.

sea trout
Sea lice damaged sea trout

18/6/21 Sadly all the catching of Salmon and Sea Trout news have been put to one side this day and for good reason. I was sent a picture of a Sea Trout caught on the Waterville fishery today, the Sea Trout was covered in 35 Sea Lice I believe and as they say the picture tells the sick story! Wind NNW light with reasonable cloud cover and Blood pressure High.

19/6/21 Lough Currane showed its anger today with a strong southerly wind blowing after yesterday’s sad news on the Salmon and Sea Trout lice department. Just for the record just one boat ventured out but by all accounts, nothing to report.

20/6/21 Just one boat out and come lunchtime headed for the dryland and that sums up today’s lack of manipulations, need I say more. NNE light with reasonable cloud cover.

21/6/21 Just two boats out this bright and sunny day and with all their efforts all they caught was a suntan. Wind ENE fresh.

22/6/21 Six boats out and by all accounts their Salmon and Sea Trout logbooks and their blue tags stayed in their haversacks. Wind NNW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover at times.
