Modified Daiwa Pairs a big success in Dingle

The Daiwa Pairs committee faced some difficulties this year in running a full festival event, but they still managed to bring a large number of anglers to Dingle for a modified pairs festival, with a return to full festival activities next year. This year’s event was a great success, with the settled weather providing lovely fishing conditions, and some great fish were caught during the week.

Specimen fish were thin on the ground this year, with the highlight a specimen bull huss. There was also a fine sting ray caught during the match on Inch, as well as some lovely bass.

The overall winner of the pairs were Mick Tapsell and Tom Wells, with runners-up Darren Bond and Colin Carey. Top individual rod was local Kerry angler Troy Francis.

Skipper Luke Aston report that mackerel have been fairly scarce of late, but the general fishing has been rather good, with good pollack fishing and some nice spurs around too.

Some fine scad have been caught as well, and the fishing in the estuary has been productive also, giving a good mix for Luke’s crews.

Unforgettable first ever pike fishing trip for 13-year-old youngsters Olly & Alfie!

First official pike session of the season and as I had a free week from before the guiding kicks off, I took my nephew Olly out and his friend Alfie, both 13 and just getting started in their fishing careers they jumped straight into the deep end with both catching their first pike and both of them being doubles, 101cm and 98cm.

We started off the day seeking out fish on the sonar to actively cast at and even though we turned a few fish they just didn’t seem that interested in feeding, my heart sank when the sun then came out and the water being like glass, I knew that it was going to be a tough day. A tactic switch to trolling paid off though with the two solid doubles. A few smaller pike and perch then broke up the rest of the day.

A good start and I’m sure the lads don’t mind both going home with new PBs and a brand-new experience!

I did also make a YouTube video featuring the action of the day.

Father & son from Austria enjoy their pike fishing in Boyle

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports…

Our first time visitors, father Walter and son Thomas, from Austria had a great first trip with us recently. Conditions weren’t that easy but the two accomplished lure anglers put in the effort and were rewarded with a number of nice pike, biggest just under 1m.

Having experienced the potential of the area, the two predator hunters are eager to try their hands on some more piking in the Boyle region in years to come…the 1m plus Esox is still waiting for them… 😉

Salmon anglers enjoy decent floods across West Cork

Rains brought decent floods to the Bandon and other West Cork rivers last week.

There 15 grilse reported on the Bandon and the same number were caught on the Ilen.

In the rivers around Bantry a few fish were also reported, with 5 caught on the Ouvane and 3 on the Glengarriff.

Better water on Currane,10 salmon and good sea trout fishing reported

A fine autumn week with water levels dropping saw 10 salmon caught on Currane, there also good numbers of sea trout to 3lb been caught on the fly.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

A couple of salmon reported from the Laune last week

Water levels were high on the Laune last week. There was 1 salmon weighing 6lbs caught on Beat 2 of the River Laune spinning. Another salmon was caught at Johnson’s weighing 7lbs, spinning. Angler Padraig Griffin also reported catching a fine 9lb sea trout from Beat 2 of the Muckross Fishery.

Blue sharks and mauve stingers keep West Cork charter anglers on their toes

David Edwards, skipper of the Silver Dawn at  West Cork Charters, reports on a good shark fishing trip at the weekend…

Back to Shark on Sunday and despite a slow start, our crew finished the day with 5 Blues.

This wasn’t the largest of them, but the joy on Mary’s face when catching and releasing it was a joy to see.

The hat that her brother Mark is wearing is a wind up for friends in America, to show that they caught bigger fish in Ireland than in the USA.

Less pleasing was the sight of a couple of Mauve Stingers on our baits. A particularly nasty stinging sod, that definitely needs gloves on when handling.
