Settled weather has seen us offshore shark fishing on several days. Every day has seen us reach double figures on Blues and the best saw us bring 22 to the boat.

The notable difference from 2019 is that it’s not just more shark being caught but a increased size as well. Just wondering if the Irish Navy has helped with it’s detention of illegal finning boats?

Inshore has seen a steady improvement with mackerel becoming more reliable and cod still hanging around in decent numbers. Pollack are quieter at the moment but other species are filling the gaps.

West Cork Charters operates the Silver Dawn, a 41′ Rodman 1250 with twin 430 HP Engines out of Courtmacsherry. The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.

First timers come good in Dungarvan

David Hehir of Dungarvan Offshore Charters reports on a recent sharking trip:

First time shark fishing for 4 local Dungarvan guys. Stephan Flynn, Lee Mulhearne, Jack Leahy & Ryan Jordan decided to try shark fishing for the first time. We had 7 sharks to the boat on the day consisting of 6 blue shark and a small porbeagle shark. What was most impressive from the day was a treble hook up for the guys at the same time. It was a bit chaotic for a few minutes but lads expertly managed to keep all lines away from each other and we landed and successful tagged all 3 sharks. Was a great day out for the lads.

Amy’s Fishing Adventures – Wrestling Wrasse from the Rocks

Amy from Amy’s Fishing Adventures had another cracking fish [fish of a lifetime] over the weekend. Sidney Kennedy reports…

6lb wrasse on the measuring mat
6lb wrasse on the measuring mat

As the sea was so calm we decided to head to Kerry for Ballan wrasse. We had a 7am start and a 2 and a half hour drive followed by a 40 minute walk before we got to a rock mark were it was safe enough for Amy to fish.

6lb ballan wrasse for Amy
6lb ballan wrasse for Amy

We had about 25 wrasse and a hand full of pollack. With a few 4lb fish landed Amy’s float slid under the water so slowly. But when she hooked into the fish it dove so hard that Amy could barely hold her feet firm on the rock as she tried to lift the rod. With a hard fight over, the wrasse was weighed and it hit the 6lb mark. What a cracker.

Podcast: Ireland on the Fly talks to Peter Mantle

Peter Mantle's final fishing project
Peter Mantle's final fishing project

For this week’s episode of Ireland on the Fly, Daire Whelan catches up with one of Ireland’s adopted sons, Peter Mantle of Delphi Lodge fame.

After success with setting up and running fishing lodges in Connemara and then the Bahamas, Peter has returned home to England to dry fly fishing on the River Test where he runs a much smaller enterprise called Chapel House.

Daire speaks to Peter about the trials and tribulations of running a fishing lodge, the numerous obstacles he had to overcome and – most importantly – how he has succeeded despite it all.

From fish disease and fish farms, to recessions, hurricanes and even a global pandemic, nothing has deterred him and he has done it all with a wry sense of humour along the way.

Peter is forthright and honest about how he made it work, and the importance, above all, of the people you’re working and fishing with.

Slack tides and easterlies make for slow fishing at Ballyquin

Ballyquin beach
Ballyquin beach

Terry O Donovan reports on the West Cork and District SAC match at Ballyquin …

17 August 2020: The club was back out again on Saturday evening last making the annual pilgrimage to West Waterford to fish Ballyquin beach.

16 anglers made the journey East including new members Seamus McShane, his son Momo, as well as returning junior angler Scott McShane. Another new member joining the ranks was junior angler Liam Davis who was pegged next to his dad Pete for the evening. For the first time in the club’s history 4 junior anglers fished the match along side their guardians and some promising anglers for the future of the sport amongst them.

Fishing on Ballyquin beach
Fishing on Ballyquin beach

The winds were Easterly, fishing a slack tide on the ebb made for a slow evening. Weavers and small turbot were being caught in ones along the beach from the first casts but despite this the action dried up fast enough. Pete Davis on peg 9 and his son Liam were leading the pack from the word go and didn’t drop the ball all night long. Nothing remarkable in terms of size or species to report for the night. The odd dog kept hopes alive of a high scoring match but this didn’t materialise.

Turbot

At the end it finished up with Team Davis wrapping up the both the senior and juniors in comfortable fashion with 19 fish between them which made up 1/3 of the catch total for the entire night.

Senior:
  • 1st. Pete Davis 12 fish
  • 2nd. Steven Hurley 5 fish
  • 3rd. Terry O Donovan 4 fish
  • 4th Jp Molloy
  • 5th Steven Sod O Donovan
  • 6th Sean Og Mcshane
  • 7th Mick Coleman
  • 8th James Kiniry
  • 9th John Joyce
  • 10th Tom Collins/ Colin O Sullivan
Juniors:
  • 1st Liam Davis 7 fish
  • 2nd Evan Collins 5 fish
  • 3rd Scott Mcshane
  • 4th Momo Mcshane

Biggest flat fish went to Evan Collins for a 30cm Flounder

Biggest round went to Sod for a 35cm Conger eel. Well done to the two lads scooping a nice few bucks for their efforts.

A total of 54 fish were caught and catches were made up of Weavers, Dogs, Turbot, Flounder and Conger eel.

Charter boat fishing shaping up well after slow start at Downings

Tub Gurnard
Tub Gurnard

Michael McVeigh reports from Downings, County Donegal:

13 August: 2020 angling has been badly affected by Coronavirus, but is now starting to shape up to be fairly good. Mackerel have turned a little patchy. Limeburner good with a lot of Spurdogs.

A few Blue Sharks around. One charter boat had a number of Tope on the Limeburner grounds. There seems to be good numbers of Cod.

Menapia Anglers enjoying great tope fishing from the shore

Menapia Sea Anglers report on what has been keeping them occupied while waiting for competition angling to resume…

With the shortage of club and open competitions due to COVID, Menapia club members had time to target tope, the ultimate speed machine, from the shore. We have had no less than 10 length based shore specimens between our members.

The best so far is Joey Brady’s beast of over 49lbs. This is followed by Joe Carley, Sean Carley and James Duffy who all had fish over 40lbs. Next up are JJ Roche and Jimmy Doyle both with fish on 35lb followed by Simon Doyle’s 20lb fish.

All these topewere quickly measured and released to fight another day.

Catch of the Week goes to the Menapia Club for these great tope from the shore.

Join the Club…

The Menapia Sea Angling Club was founded in 2000, by a small handful of Wexford anglers. It was felt that to retain and grow interest & membership of a successful club, it would have to engage a wide variety shore-angling, that would cater for all. For more information see

Inland fisheries Ireland Officers seize boat, illegal net and salmon on the tidal River Suir

Inland fisheries Ireland Officers seize boat, illegal net and salmon on the tidal River Suir

Firearm discharged by offenders during the incident

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Fisheries Protection Officers seized a boat, net and nine wild salmon on the upper tidal river Suir during the night on Tuesday, 28th of July, near Carrick-on-Suir, encountered during a routine fisheries patrol. A firearm was discharged by the alleged offenders while IFI Officers were responding to this illegal and highly damaging environmental crime. Nobody was injured during the incident. Members of An Garda Síochána attended the scene and the incident is being investigated.

David Mc Inerney, Inland Fisheries Ireland Director, said: “The salmon caught by this illegal net were on the final leg of an arduous journey to reach their native spawning rivers. The fish were fresh in from the sea, having survived a journey from either the coastal waters off west Greenland or the Faroe Island, before being cruelly killed by an illegal net, a few miles from their final destination. It cannot be stressed enough that nobody should purchase wild salmon that does not carry either a green or white gill tag through the mouth and gill clearly displaying the name Inland Fisheries Ireland.  I would like to highlight the dedication and courage demonstrated by the officers in tackling illegal fishing in the face of significant personal danger.”

Information may be passed directly to local Inland Fisheries Ireland staff or by phoning IFI’s confidential hotline number to enable members of the public to report incidents of water pollution, illegal fishing and fish kills -0818 34 74 24 0818 FISH 24.
