Dungarvan boats in the thick of some top angling

Charter boats operating out of Dungarvan have had a couple of bumper weeks with quality shark fishing and some pretty good ground and wreck fishing too. Dungarvan Offshore Charters had some great days sharking with 8 to the boat on one day, all tagged and released as part of the Marine Sportfish Tagging Programme. And the recent calm weather was perfect for targeting offshore wrecks which threw up some nice pollock and cod for the Rinnashark Sea Angling Club who ventured out for the day.

The blue skies also brought some good fishing to Dungarvan Bay Charter Boats as the warm weather seemed to encourage plenty of ling to bite.

Grilse and good salmon reported from the Bandon

Bandon River
Bandon River

The recent good fishing continued into last week on the Bandon with over 50 salmon reported on the association waters alone. Many of these were grilse but there were also some bigger fish to 12lb. The water was high and in excellent condition for fly fishing all week. The river is in good order for all methods for the week ahead.

Good progress has been made from the Bandon weir down by the contractor in reinstating the pools and this work is due to be complete by Sept 30th. This will be welcome news to anglers as this stretch from the town downstream has been off limits to angling for a few years due to the flood relief scheme and could be open to fishing by the start of next season.

Caha Project

Bandon Anglers Association reprots on a great project which the Bandon Rivers Trust is involved in on the River Caha in Dunmanway. From a salmonid perspective, it will greatly improve factors such as habitat, water quality and it will reduce siltation of spawning gravels.

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Day tickets and club membership are also available.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Steady fishing for salmon anglers on the Lee

River Lee
River Lee

Angling on the River Lee remained steady for the week with high water producing some decent results. Most salmon were caught on club waters and at the ESB Salmon Fishery. Most of these fish were in the 5-6lb range and were taken mainly on fly, shrimp and spinner.

River Lee
River Lee

At the Waterworks Weir angling remained quiet due to many fish passing over the weir with ease due to river levels remaining high for most of the week, although 4 salmon were still reported caught, all caught on spinner.

Inniscarra

10 salmon reported for the week. 3 were caught by local anglers weighing 6lbs, 8lbs and 9lbs all on shrimp.

Two anglers from Antrim had 7 salmon between them ranging in weight from 6lbs to 9.5lbs, all caught on shrimp.  Fishing very good at present.

The River Lee drains a catchment of 484 square miles of which much is taken up by two large reservoirs. Salmon Angling is confined to an 8 mile stretch from Inniscarra dam to Cork city.

Lee Salmon Anglers Club

The Lee Salmon Anglers club was established in 1967. It was formed by a group of anglers interested in protecting and promoting the sport of salmon and trout angling on the river Lee. Day tickets available: http://www.leesalmonanglers.ie/

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

West Cork round up – many small salmon rivers fishing well

Some great catches reported across West Cork last week. Amongst them the Comholla had 30 salmon for the week. Of the day ticket angler report, best catch was a 9lb salmon on worm.

No too far away the Ouvane reported 20 salmon while over on the Glengarriff there were 16 salmon reported, and the Mealagh had 18 salmon.

Anglers enjoy great sport on the Ilen as water levels remain steady

Another view of the Ilen

Over the course of the week the river remained at a steady height still up about 20cm above general low water conditions due to recent wet weather. This allowed fresh fish to enter the system on a daily basis, with salmon caught on fly, worm and spinner throughout the week.

On Bank Holiday Monday the 3rd, 15 salmon were report caught on River Ilen Anglers Club waters, these fish ranged between 4-10lb with 8 being fresh off the tide.

On the Tuesday and Wednesday reports were mixed with some anglers seeing many fish moving through the system, some fresh and some resident, 9 salmon were reported caught on club waters over these two days the biggest 9lb.

On the Thursday it was a mixture for anglers who ventured out with a number of anglers not seeing a fish all day whereas three other anglers between them hooked 18 grilse. All these fish were in the 3-4lb range and fresh off the tide. Of the 18 hooked only 5 were landed, all taken on spinner.

Between Friday and Sunday a few fish were reported each day, mainly grilse in the 5lb bracket. Angling effort had slowed somewhat probably due to fishing fatigue with all the recent floods but prospects are looking good for the coming week with rain forecast.

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Munster Blackwater continues to fish well

salmon
Look at this for a fish on Glenda Powell's water! Estimated in high teens as released. Well done to Pete Davis after 40 minutes of a hard fight to land this beautiful fresh salmon and to Liam his son for netting the fish.

Fishing continues very good on the Munster Blackwater with some lovely fish in the system. One angler caught and released a fish of about 6kgs on a fishery beat above Mallow while staff member present and trout fishing has again rallied with an improvement again this past week. Fishing is reported good in the upper reaches as far back as the Kerry boundaries. More challenging conditions still exist below Lismore due to water clarity after the relative recent rainfalls but very good news in general from the catchment.

Blues are back at Wicklow

Wicklow Boat Charters skipper Kit Dunne had some great shark fishing over the past week as blue shark and a welcome porbeagle made a return to the east coast.

First up was a group of anglers involved with Holy Mackerel fish oil products and the shark must have homed in on the slick they made as they managed 8 blues and a Porbeagle to the boat during the day.

Later in the week Kit had another group out chasing the blues and they fared almost as well with 7 blues to the boat. Top angler on the day was Tallaght angler Peter McCartin who landed 4 shark. I popped a measuring mat into Peter a few weeks ago and I’m hoping he’s getting to use it!

Peter with one of his 4 shark

Peter’s angling companion George Gaffney got in on the action too as he managed to land his first ever blue and then went and got himself a bigger one.

More blue sharks for Amy’s Fishing Adventures

Amy and shark
Amy and her dad pose with a shark #CPRsavesfish

Sidney Kennedy reports on Amy’s latest Angling Adventures…

We had good fun on Sunday blue shark fishing and there was even a surprise porbeagle shark pup.

There was 4 of us fishing myself, Amy, my son Derick and his girlfriend Stephanie. It was an early start for us and we were launched by 7.30am. We were able to catch mackerel with ease for the first time in years. So with the bait caught we headed out to the shark grounds. We had a 35 minute drive we were at the mark. It only took 20 minutes after that  for Amy to hook the first blue shark and after a 10 minute fight we had it in the boat, where it was quickly unhooked at put back unharmed.

Then we were into another one and soon after Derick landed his shark my rod went off. Just like that we had 3 sharks landed and returned unharmed.

Stephanie followed up the action with a reel melting run. She set the hook and it gave another few fast runs that seemed very fast for a blue shark and as I pulled the fish towards the surface I got a super surprise as a porbeagle was looking up at me. It was the first one the we ever landed. So, we had another 2 sharks caught and released, but as everyone of them was under 40lb I increased the size of the hooks and bait but we were still hitting pups. Overall it was a good family fun fishing day.
