Wild Atlantic Angling for bluefin tuna on the Wild Atlantic Way

Bluefin tuna
Bluefin tuna

The first bluefin tuna caught in this year’s scientific catch-tag-release fishery was taken by Michael Callaghan and crew aboard the LEAH-C at the weekend. Michael and his crew win Catch of the Week for this special catch.

Only moments later anglers on Adrian Molloy’s Deep Blue caught numbers 2 and 3 in a rare double hook up. And within half an hour Leah-C had no.4 in what must have been one of the most adrenaline packed, arm aching hour of sport in Irish angling history.

Salmon abundant on the Bandon last week, prospects are good for this week

River Bandon
River Bandon

W/E SUNDAY 2nd AUGUST 2020

There were over 80 fish reported last week in what must be one of the best week’s salmon fishing on the river in recent times. The quality of the fish was also very good with grilse in the 5 to 7lb bracket but also some larger salmon to 15 lb. The majority of the fish reported were on the association waters so the number overall was probably much higher. The river was high for most of the week resulting in good fly water. The river is still in good order and prospects are good for the coming week.

Lots of salmon seen in the Laune, few reports of fish caught

Beaufort Bridge on the River Laune, Co. Kerry
Beaufort Bridge on the River Laune, Co. Kerry

Last week saw 2 salmon reported from beat 2, caught by local anglers on worm and spinner weighing 9lbs and 8lbs. Lots of fish to be seen.

Water levels on the Laune have been low, but are up considerably in the last few days. the gauge at Laune bridge is up to 1.7m from arounf 1m at the end of July.

Reports of a lot of fish on Killarney Lakes, 3 salmon caught trolling, average 9lbs.

River Lee fishing reports, salmon fishing well this past fortnight

River Lee
River Lee

W/E SUNDAY 26th JULY 2020

The Lee system produced decent catches for the week despite continued low water with the lower part of the river producing good results. At the Anglers Bridge, 9 grilse were caught. With a good build-up of salmon at the waterworks weir 30 salmon/grilse were taken for the week, all fish captured were mainly taken on shrimp.

W/E SUNDAY 2nd AUGUST 2020

With large congregations of salmon holding in the upper tidal stretch of the north channel during the low water conditions a welcomed flood mid-week allowed these fish to move upstream and in turn provide great sport on all stretches as the week progressed. Up to 70 salmon ranging from 3-13lb were caught on all methods including fly and spinner throughout the river in the second half of the week. Anglers reported that it has been the best run of fish in many years giving the difficult low water conditions in 2018 and 2019 seasons which were coupled with poor returns.

Exceptional run of salmon on the Ilen

W/E SUNDAY 2nd AUGUST 2020

On Monday 27th after overnight rain the river rose almost 3 feet, late in the evening as the river dropped and cleared 8 grilse ranging from 4-6lb were caught by Club anglers, mainly spinning due to the high water.

On the Tuesday and Wednesday the river was in great condition with 25 grilse in the 3-7lb range caught on fly, worm and spinner with two club anglers catching 5 grilse each on the Tuesday.

On the Thursday the river would remain mainly unfishable due to heavy rain with the river rising 5 feet.

On the Friday four club anglers had 6 salmon between them early on Friday morning before the river rose once again after early morning rain leaving it unfishable for most of the day but 3 more fish were reported caught in the late evening on spinner as the river cleared with the best being 9lb.

Over the weekend the river was in great condition with a great run of grilse. On Saturday alone 25 grilse ranging from 3-8lb were reported caught on club water with juvenile member Amy O’Brien catching 2 grilse in the 4lb range. On the Sunday 7 salmon were reported caught, the best fish just over 17lb caught by a club members fishing the middle of the river.

Hopefully with the exceptional run of fish this year we will see an improvement on the number of late (blackberry) fish returning to our rivers as these fish have for the most part being absent in recent years.

Big numbers of salmon throughout the Munster Blackwater

W/E SUNDAY 26th JULY 2020

A great run of fish in the Blackwater throughout the catchment from bottom to top. Fish size is varied with grilse 2 to 3 kgs but some large fish also in the mix. Salmon are back as far as the Millstreet Beats and some stakeholders and anglers have said they haven’t seen as much fish in 10 years in those areas.  Trout fishing has slowed down a bit but is still ok on the main channel also and staff are meeting good numbers of anglers. The forecasted rain will shake things up to help the journey to the upper reaches once we don’t get too much of it!

W/E SUNDAY 2nd AUGUST 2020

Salmon are reported as far back as Millstreet in great numbers and the team have reported seeing some beautiful fish on their travels throughout the District, with reports of large volumes of fish moving through all beats and a lot of angler activity. Between Fermoy and Cappoquin, the increased water- levels have hindered fishing in these areas and more unsettled weather is forecasted for the first days of August. The fishing should get interesting when it settles down then in these areas but overall an abundance of Salmon present. Trout fishing has slowed down being the only negative.

Great variety fishing reported from Killala Bay

Charter skipper Donal Kennedy reports from Killala Bay…

On July 22nd a party of anglers from Co. Mayo set out from Killala Harbour. The weather was nice with light westerly winds. Out over rocky ground some good catches of pollack, ling, cod, pouting, coalfish were landed. Plenty of nice mackerel were caught, too.

Nice Killala Bay pollack

On Friday 24th July another party of anglers fished onboard “Leah”. The winds were fresh south-westerly with rain promised later in the day. We drifted over sandy ground and things got interesting with some nice turbot, plaice, flounder, dabs, thornback ray, spotted ray, and blonde ray being landed. All ray were returned alive. Plenty of fine big mackerel were caught as well. All returned to harbour well pleased with the day’s fishing.

Another fine turbot

On Sunday 26th a party of anglers from Tubbercurry Co. Sligo set out from Killala. The winds were from the north-west moderate at first, to increase to fresh later in the day which restricted our area of fishing and time in certain areas. We drifted over rocky ground and things got very busy for the anglers with coalfish up to 6lbs. being caught plus some double figure pollack being caught as well. Also landed were cod, pouting and plenty of mackerel. Later, we had to move to a sheltered spot to finish out the day and the anglers were not disappointed with some more fine pollack and mackerel being landed.

Fine North Mayo ling

Lurgan anglers find Muckno tricky as roach not biting

Angelr with his catch of coarse fish
Philip "Jacko" Jackson was the winner on the day

Lurgan Coarse Angling Club report on their latest competition this year, fished on Lough Muckno…

02 August: Today should of been the fourth round of the Club Angler of the Year. With the league not taking place this year we decided to use the remaining dates for knock ups. We were fishing the high pegs on Concra Wood Muckno. Fishing proved to be very tricky as the roach are still not back in numbers. Most of the fish caught were perch hybrids and the odd bonus skimmer on the feeder with some anglers also getting a few on the pole late on.

Philip “Jacko” Jackson was the winner on the day

At the weigh in it was very tight with Jacko coming out on top with 6.425kg followed by Kevin Norcliff in 2nd with 6.1.75kg and Johnny Mckinley in 3rd with 6.150kg, 4th Davy Hamilton 5.450kg 5th Sean Donnelly 4.350kg

Birds, whales and anglers meet in West Cork for the fishing

Birds and whales feeding off Courtmacsherry

Tom Collins, skipper of Loch an Iasc, was out last week doing a bit of drifting on the reefs with some good cod to 7lb. They then hit a skate mark for the ebb tide resulting in this specimen of 166lb for Chris O Sullivan. Chris put together a video of his day on the water – well worth a watch…

Staying in the Union Hall area, Adrian Nowotynski from Irish Deep Sea Charters had a great day on the blues earlier this week. By the end of a busy day his anglers had 10 landed (All tagged and released) and a few lost. We’ll done to Leon for landing 3 of the biggest.

David Edwards of the Silver Dawn out of Courtmacsherry was also getting stuck into the sharks this week. His anglers had a good day offshore today with 7 Blue Sharks and 1 Porbeagle Shark to keep them busy. But the highlight was the feeding frenzy they came across on the way back. Several hundred birds of many different species along with whales and dolphins all around the boat made for a great end to the day.

West Cork Charters

West Cork Charters operates the Silver Dawn, a 41′ Rodman 1250 with twin 430 HP Engines out of Courtmacsherry. The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.
