Specimen Spurs on Stingray in Sligo

Tommy McCallion of SeafishingSligo has been getting some great fishing in despite having some rough seas to contend with. The angling was excellent this past few weeks with a lot of spurdog of specimen size. The pollock fishing is also at it’s best with a lot of fish near specimen size, and the the mixed general fishing is good!

Shock-Waves hit some electric Tope fishing

Eddie Butler from the Shock-Waves small boats crew reports on a recent trip to Wexford:
The Shock-Waves crew recently took a trip to Wexford in search of Specimen Tope. Joined by Barry Murphy and Paul Twomey it was to be a Kilkenny-Waterford-Cork battle. The fishing was slow to start with a mixture of fish coming on board. After a while we anchored our mark and it was only a couple of minutes before we were into some cracking tope. The tope came hot and heavy from then on with some very lively runs and reels screeching for a frantic couple of hours. Paul had two specimen tope to the boat and there were a couple more just shy of that mark. A great day to be afloat in cracking conditions and great craic and company.

Silver Dawn’s extended licence put to good use with monster ling on the wrecks

Ling haul on Silver Sawn

Dave Edwards reports from the Silver Dawn where a great haul of big Ling wins this week’s Catch of the Week:

After the good shark fishing last week, this week we took the opportunity to make the most of some settled weather and Silver Dawn’s new 60 mile license.

With a very experienced group of anglers onboard we did an exploratory trip out to wrecks in the 40 to 50 mile range and the lads were not disappointed. Eight species from Megrim to Blue Shark along with Cod, Coalie and Haddock made for a great long day but the highlight was the number of Ling over specimen size with several over 30lb and two bigger fish lost.
Best landed was 34lb followed closely by 33lb.
It was well worth the extra time and expenditure in gaining the 60 mile licence and these lads put it to good use.

West Cork Charters

Go fishing…

West Cork Charters operates the Silver Dawn, a 41′ Rodman 1250 with twin 430 HP Engines out of Courtmacsherry. The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.

Pike 1 – Angler 0 ….almost!

pike
Garreth's near miss pike

Garreth Maher had an interesting day out piking in Lanesboro recently:

I went to Lanesboro, Longford on the Shannon for some pike fishing. I arrived, set up a couple of rods and while I was at the second rod my friend called me shouting my name and I looked around to see my rod flying into the water as a pike made off with it. About an hour later I saw him near the top of the water I cast my other line on top and managed to get my rod back and land the pike. It was quite a saga! Nice pike, weight unknown.

Garreth’s near miss pike

He wasn’t finished with that and managed another decent pike to make an eventful day even better.

Unbelievable angling in Galway Bay this week!

John Fleming, skipper of the Brazen Hussey 2 reports…

Unbelievable angling in Galway Bay this week!

Non-stop action on the reefs, clean ground and shark grounds! We had a session on the spurs that got out of control about 40 spurs for 3 hours at anchor including three specimens for James O’Donnel and son Matthew.

The next day we were on the reefs and mixed species fishing was very good. We had sandeels, mackerel, poor cod, pollock, coalies, pouting, grey and red gurnards and wrasse. Fantastic to see the bay so full of life!

We were then on the blue shark grounds for our first days sharking and had a fantastic start. However, first shark to the boat was a nice porbeagle of about 70-80lbs. for Mark Lydon. We had 2 small blues, then David Trill had a big run…again a porbeagle of about 90lbs. Just as we were about to call it a day we had another screaming run. Mark was up again and a good scrap was to follow and mark got his second porbeagle of the day.

All in all a fantastic week for anglers in Galway Bay!

John Fleming, skipper of the Brazen Hussey 2, can operate out of Rosaveel, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing. The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and release safely.

Peter fishing in Arrow picking up

Eleven-year-old Charlie Harte with a nice Arrow brownie

On Lough Arrow, Green Peter hatches have improved with anglers reporting more and more on the water late evening. Noel Fairbanks had two trout at 3.5 lbs and 2 lbs, while Gerry Martin had two fish averaging 2.5lbs. Eleven-year-old Charlie Harte from Highwood also scored on Arrow catching a 14inch brownie.

Plenty of fly life on the Nore

Dan O’Neill reports from Mount Juliet on the River Nore…

With the wind dropping back a bit and weather quite humid fly hatches were plentiful along the Nore, lots of spinners and some sedges dive-bombing to the water’s surface.

Plenty of fly life on the Nore

It’s been a busy few days on the river, plenty of trout caught mostly on dry dropper with some later in the evening on sedge patterns. Ptn took probably 75 percent of the trout I had with the remainder falling to a French nymph.

I was lucky enough to meet a gentleman named Joe Hickey and fished with him for a few hours on Monday. Joe had some lovely trout, two of which gave a great account of themselves and made us both remember why we enjoy this sport so much. It was a pleasure to watch Joe fishing and I did so for quite some time.

We are now running evening fly fishing sessions on the river comprising of a talk on different patterns, different techniques, setups, how to read the water and talks on tackle. For information on the sessions and pricing please contact me on the details below.
