River Drowes Report – Monday 24th  to Sunday 30th June 2019.

Water levels were fairly low this week with the gauge reading 0.50 on Monday. The river gradually dropped and by Sunday the gauge read 0.41m. The water is somewhat warm at 17ºC though the drop in air temperatures and sunlight hours should help matters. Despite the lowish water conditions, the Drowes fished really well. To date there are 63 salmon entered into the Catch Register for the week which would equate to around 100 salmon for the week! The catch consisted of mainly grilse in the 3lb to 5lb category as the good grilse run continued with the odd larger salmon caught.

There were numerous records of multiple catches such as Patrick O’Malley’s four grilse caught & released on fly on Tuesday and M. Joyce’s three grilse caught and released on Sunday. The fishery’s overseas guests did well on the fishery with multiple catches recorded which will undoubtedly see them returning next year.

There was a 4lb Pink Salmon caught on Wednesday which was retained and collected by IFI for analysis. Anglers are requested (as elsewhere) to retain any Pink Salmon caught, Tag the fish and hand the fish into the Drowes Fishery Office who will contact IFI. A replacement tag will be provided to replace the one used on the Pink Salmon.

Moy Angling Report W/E Sunday 30th June 2019.

Unsettled weather continued to affect angling last week but catches remained good with approximately 300 fish reported caught. Once again, three quarters of the fish were caught on fisheries just downstream of Foxford and on fisheries upstream of Foxford.

On the Moy Fishery some of the successful anglers included Steve Hazeldine (UK) with a 3.5 lbs grilse on fly at the Ridge Pool, Sergio Breton Diaz (Spain) with a 4+ lbs grilse on fly at the Weir Pool, Tristan Bayard (France) with a 5 lbs grilse on fly at the Cathedral Beat, Terry Hickman (UK) with a 5.75 lbs fish on fly at the Cathedral Beat, Josh Devers from Ballina (9 years old) with a 5.75 lbs fish on worm at the Cathedral Beat and Jean Christophe Chanteloube (France) with a 4 lbs grilse on fly at the Spring Wells Beat 2.

Sergio Breton Diez releases a grilse in the Weir Pool beat

Upstream, the Foxford Fishery had another good week with Rod Singer and Gerry Cahill taking their first Moy salmon. Michael Raper, Darryl Kennedy and Dermot Hegarty all had fish. On the Cloongee Fishery, Pascal Tasset (France) had 6 fish for his week ranging from 2 lbs to 9 lbs all on bubble & fly. On East Mayo Anglers waters, Peter Thornton (UK) had three fish of 4.5 lbs, 7 lbs & 11.5 lbs on worm; Stephen Challinor (UK) caught two fish of  2.5 lbs & 3 lbs on fly and Christian Bardet (France) caught a fine 8 lbs fish on worm.

With a good show of fish now in the tidal waters, strong tides and much more settled weather we should see good fishing over the coming week with fish starting to lie in the mid river fisheries.

Good Summer Pike for Italian Anglers at Melview Lodge

Kevin Lyons reports from Melview Fishing Lodge:

Italian Pike anglers Maurizio, Alessandro and Gianvito from Italy were over for their first Pike fishing holiday to Ireland and decided to stay at Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford. The first part of the week for the guys was a bit slow due to changing weather conditions, however, as the week went on the Pike started to get bigger.

Gianvito is all smiles with his Pike

Maurizio with his 4th Pike of the session

Fishing with both soft and hard lures in depths of between 1.5m and 4m produced a lot of Pike of 90 + cm along with a few over the 100cm and it turned out to be a great weeks fishing for them. The guys were great fun to fish with and to have around the lodge.

A well wrapped-up Alessandro with a cracking pike. That’s Irish summer piking!

Thanks guys for a great week of fishing and fun, hope to see you in Ireland again soon.

ALL FISH RELEASED UNHARMED.

Heavy rain does little to dampen the fishing in Waterville

Vincent Appleby reports on the fishing in Lough Currane

26/6/19: Well talking of yesterdays tropical  floods, it was mainly mountainous rain but officially its 10.4 mm of rainfall? On the Southside of the Lake, the mountains were flowing and on the North side and the Commeragh River it did make a bit of a flood in mm terms you will have to go to a Lady’s wheelbarrow and it was full, so you can workout yourself how many mm of rainfall that is. Now today’s action, Currane Angler Mr. Peter Hughes, while C&R fly fishing with his Gillie, caught two fine Sea Trout both in the 2 ½ lbs class. Wind NE light and very warm and cloudy. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 20.1 c.

27/6/19: Straight to the Salmon department, Currane and Dublin Angler Mr. Colin Lynham, caught a fine Grilse on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie. Now we head for the Salmon fly department, Currane angler, Drew Brown from Dublin caught a fine Grilse on the fly, while Fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. Wind East calm and very warm and believe it or not Valentia Met station recorded 19c. at 6am this morning. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 22.2 c.

28/6/19: Again all the Salmon headlines go to Currane angler Mr. Colin Lynham of Dublin, while Trolling with his Gillie, caught a fine 5 lbs. Grilse and just for the record Colin lost two more to his rod. For the rest of the Currane Angling news it was all quiet on the SW front. Wind South and veered SW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather Maximum air temperatures for Valentia 28c and came second to Shannon Airport 28.4c and those were the two highest in the Country.

29/6/19: The Currane Angling News, all quiet on all fronts. Wind S and veered SW, overcast all day with misty rain at times. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 21.8 c. For the Waterville weeks weather forecast click  www.rte.ie/weather/47412-waterville/

30/6/19: There was some fine action on Lough Currane today so straight to the North Shore and the Bungalow, Currane Angler Mr. Kevin Healy of Mornington, Co. Meath, caught a cracker of an 8 ½ lbs. salmon on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfiishingatloughcurrane.com and staying in the Salmon department and catch of the day goes to Currane fly Angler Mr. Colin Lynham of Dublin and for good reason, he caught 3 Grilse on the fly, their weights are as follows 4,5,6 lbs, and finished off with an 1 ½ lbs. sea trout and all caught this morning because Colin was back on the road to Dublin by 10 am. For the rest of the Currane Anglers it was all quiet on the SW front. Wind W light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 18.1 c.

1/7/19: Straight to the Sea Trout Department, C&R Currane fly angler Mr. Ronan Grady, caught a fine 3 lbs Sea Trout on the drift. For the rest of the Currane angling News it was all quiet on all fronts. Wind NE veered NW light to fresh. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 16.5 c.

2/7/19: Currane Angler Mr. Murray T Beatts of Tampa Florida, USA and Cahersiveen, Co Kerry and fishing out of www.butlerarms.com caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. Salmon on the troll and finished his day off with a C&R 1 ½ lbs. Sea Trout and staying with Murray, we go to the artistry department and for good reason, his partner Joan Wuischpard painted a picturesque painting of the Bungalow on her last trip in 2016, all I can say is worth waiting for as you can see for yourself. For the rest of the Currane angling news it was all quiet on all fronts. Wind ENE light with reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 16. 4 c.

Drop in water levels brings fishing on in Belturbet

Maura Hughes of Church View Guest House reports from Belturbet

This week with the good spell of weather, water levels have dropped and fishing conditions  have picked back up. There are plenty of perch, Roach, hybrids and some bream being caught on the Erne. Below is photo of Eric Grey from Durham  with a nice hybrid caught on the Erne river. He had a great days fishing on the Erne system picture taken by John Thexton. They have  been coming  to stay at Church View now for over 30 years now. Other Anglers have had good catches of Rudd and tench locally too.

On a sad note one of our regular fly fishermen Walter Moorehead who used to come to fish on Annagh lake and Holy Lake has died suddenly. Our deepest sympathies go out to his friends and  family.

Catch and Release this weekend to celebrate International Year of the Salmon

Anglers are invited to practise ‘Catch and Release’ when fishing for all salmon this weekend, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of July 2019, as part of a Catch and Release Weekend to mark International Year of the Salmon (IYS).

Sean Canney TD, Minister with responsibility for Inland Fisheries, encouraged anglers to participate and contribute towards IYS. “Atlantic salmon is distributed in over 140 rivers across Ireland, however the number of salmon returning to Irish shores has decreased by 70 per cent in recent decades. The Catch and Release weekend is just one of many initiatives taking place during IYS to highlight the challenges facing salmon populations across the Northern Hemisphere” said the Minister.

Catch and release, where the angler safely returns the fish to water, contributes to the maintenance of healthy fish stocks and ensures the sustainability for the resource into the future.  Anglers who participate in catch and release over the weekend can submit their catch details via an online form to earn a #CPRSavesFish merit pin. The new #CPRSavesFish Pins Programme will be available to anglers throughout 2019 while stocks last. Anglers are also invited to share pictures of their catch and release on social media using the hashtags #CPRSavesFish and #YearOfTheSalmon to promote the message of sustainability with the public.

A Super Smoothie for Willie in Wicklow with 22lbs of Hound

Willie Roche was out with Wicklow Boat Charters last week when he caught the fish of a lifetime – a 22lb smooth hound.

Fishing with crab baits in relatively slack tides, Willie felt the slow pull of a good smoothie mouthing the bait and tightened into a powerful fish. Once attached, Willie was thankful for the slack tides as the fish took line off the reel with a series of strong runs.

When the fight was over, skipper Anthony expertly boated the smoothie, a female fish which measured 122cm on the IFI brag mat. Realising that she was exceptionally large and with a possible record for the Irish Specimen Fish Committee, Willie brought her ashore in a livewell in order to weigh her on dry land.

Willie and his 22lb smoothie

Rob McLean and Gavin Moran, who were fishing nearby, did the honours and collected both Willie and smooth hound for the journey back to Wicklow harbour. There she tipped the scales to 22lbs – a couple of pounds short of the Irish record (a 24.86lbs/11.27kgs fish caught by Dean Quigley from south Wexford in 2016) but a serious fish to land nonetheless and a specimen for the ISFC Annual Report for 2019 – congrats to Willie.

Once weighed she was released safely back to the waters of Wicklow bay from where she came. #CPRSavesFish

Released to fight another day #CPRSavesFish

This was just one of over a dozen smooth hounds caught on the day, if you’d like to go fishing with Wicklow Boat Charters for specimen smoothies, spurs, tope or any other east coast fish, details follow………

Good evening fishing on the Nore, fly life in abundance

Dan O’Neill reports from the river Nore at Mount Juliet:

A great week on the fishery, plenty of trout caught on dry flies, wet flies and nymphs.

The trout I got to see myself were all in great condition and gave an excellent account of themselves when hooked. The evening rise over the weekend was strong and fly life was in abundance.  Water levels are now at 0.29 on the gauge, the thunderstorm showers rose the river slightly but it dropped back within 24hrs.

A Nore brownie goes back

There are plenty of gudgeon and minnow along the margins also and eels seem to be more plentiful this season which is great to see.
