Two anglers plead guilty to illegal fishing methods on the Cong River during the annual closed season

Two anglers have recently appeared in court on charges relating to illegal fishing methods on the Cong River and fishing during the closed season. On Thursday, 23rd of May, Mr Mindaugas Jenkus of Claremorris, County Mayo and Mr Dalius Bureninas of Birr, County Offaly appeared in front of Judge Mary Fahy at Clifden District Court in respect of breaches of fisheries legislation on the Cong River which occurred on the 9th of September 2018.

Both defendants represented themselves and pleaded guilty to strokehauling (using a weighted instrument or device with a rod and line or otherwise to foul-hook fish) and fishing out of season on the Cong River. Mr Bureninas also pleaded guilty to a further charge of obstruction under Section 301 (7) of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act 1959.

Fisheries Officer Paul Reynolds outlined the facts of the case to the court while Assistant Fisheries Inspector Barry Kelly also told the court that the Cong River was a very important salmonid fishery with has a large run of atlantic salmon, a good stock of brown trout and is of particular conservation interest in relation to ferox trout for which the river is renowned. Fisheries Inspector Pat Gorman stated that these offences were very serious due to the conservation status of the Cong River when asked his opinion by Judge Fahy.

Judge Fahy commented on how serious a matter these offences were and referred to Mr Bureninas giving a false name and address when lawfully demanded. She also noted that Mr Jenkus had a recent conviction for a similar fisheries offence.  Judge Fahy stated that if both defendants paid costs of €600 each to the Court at a sitting of Clifden District Court on the 26th of September, she may deal with the matter by way of a somewhat reduced fine. She also warned both men to be on their best behaviour and not to come to the attention of Inland Fisheries Ireland again as there was a risk of a custodial sentence being imposed.

Dr Ciaran Byrne, CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “Salmon and sea trout angling in Ireland is worth €210 million to the Irish economy and supports 3,200 jobs often in rural communities. The Cong River is one of the main tributaries of Lough Corrib, is one of the most important salmon rivers in the west of Ireland and provides habitat for a very unique salmonid sub species, ferox trout. The Cong River is closed to angling during September as a conservation measure relating to both Atlantic salmon and ferox trout. The river attracts many anglers and tourists annually to fish for these unique wild salmonid species”.

Members of the public can report instances of illegal fishing, water pollution of invasive species by calling Inland Fisheries Ireland’s confidential hotline number on 0818 34 74 24 or 0818 FISH 24.

Paul Boothby, MAP Fishing is the 2019 winner of the Ballinamore Angling Festival

Lakelands Angling Ballinamore reports on the Ballinamore Angling Festival…

winners

39 festival anglers took part in this years competition which kicked off with 60 anglers on the bank for the Ivan Price Open match last Sunday. After a slow start the sections slowly woke up with the introduction of feed providing the opportunity for some good fishing. In total contrast to last year it was a very wet week, chilly too at times and the wind got up on Friday making it difficult for all.

Congratulations to Paul who had his sight on the match after a boost from Connolly’s Shore on Wednesday. But the competition was tight with Bob Nudd last years winner, very close behind. However, it was Cavan angler Wayne Fuller who came through to take the runner-up position on the final day with 11.850kg from Connolly’s Shore and Kent’s Barry Chapman holding on to his 3rd place after a tough day on Cully’s Shore. Bob finished in 4th position with Francis McGoldrick in 5th place.

Whilst there was plenty of competition on the bank it was refreshing to see the travelling anglers making the most of their holiday; plenty of fun on the shore where new friends are made every year. Thank you to all who took part and to club members for facilitating the event.

Moy fishes well after slow start

William Thornton reports on the week ending Sunday 2nd June

The week got off to a slow start with low water levels but heavy rain on Thursday saw a flood come up moving fish across the system. This resulted in a big increase in angling effort for the weekend with over 350 salmon reported caught.

On the Moy Fishery, some of the successful anglers were John Ryan Tipperary (11 lbs on fly – Ridge Pool), Thomas Lohmann Germany (6.25 lbs on fly – Ridge Pool), Brian White (3 salmon on fly ranging between 4 & 10 lbs – Ridge Pool), Micheal Bothwell NI (5 salmon on fly 4 of which he released – Ridge Pool) and Norman Goldberg Germany (4 lbs on fly – Weir Pool).

Micheal Bothwell ready to release a fish on the Ridge Pool

Upstream of Ballina, Pat Gorman, Offaly, had a 7 lbs fish on prawn on Armstrong’s Fishery, while Piermen Bouchard, Switzerland, caught a 10 lbs salmon on prawn on Gannon’s. On the Foxford Fishery, Jimmy Davison, NI, had a nice 15 lbs salmon on prawn. Other successful anglers on the Foxford Fishery were Jack Sollis, UK, (9 lbs on spinner) & Uwe Steffan, Germany, (10 lbs on bubble & fly). On Cloongee, Patrice Boisadam France had two on bubble & fly, while Austrian flyangler, Martin Worz, landed a  7 lbs fish. Anglers on the East Mayo water also did well! Lother Deeg, Germany, had a nine pounder on fly, while Margaret Logue from Kildare also landed a 9 lbs fish (on worm). Fishing on Lough Conn, 11 year old Cormac Murphy had his first two salmon of 4 to 5 lbs  on the fly. Young Cormac released both his fish!

With fish now spread across the system and the numbers moving into the river on each tide increasing, prospects are looking good for the week ahead.

FIPSed 25th European Coarse Angling Championships, Lower River Bann

The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (NCFFI), awarded the honour of hosting the 25th anniversary of this event by the Fédéracion International de la Pêche Sportive, has been working closely with the local community to bring this 25th anniversary event to the Lower River Bann in Mid Ulster.  It will be the first time that Northern Ireland will host an event of this calibre since the World Championships were held on the River Erne in 1992, and the Newry Canal in 1982.

Partners and sponsors unite on Mid Ulster Councils coarse angling facility at Portglenone ahead of the world-renowned coarse fishing championships set to take place on the Lower River Bann in less than a months’ time. Pictured are Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Martin Kearney, Stephen Douglas, Waterways Ireland, Councillors Ian Milne and Sean McPeake, Edward Montgomery, Honorable Irish Society and Oliver McGauley, Hon. President of the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland.

The championships are set to be staged around the communities of Portglenone and Bellaghy in the Bann Corridor, an area of outstanding natural beauty where the teams representing eighteen nations will be hosted throughout the championships bringing a welcome boost to the local economy.

Significant investment from Waterways Ireland and Mid Ulster District Council and the generosity of local landowners has led to the enhancement of the existing coarse fishing facility to support an angling event of this size.

Event organiser Jack Tisdall, NCFFI says: “To host this prestigious event is fantastic news for the coarse angling community as we are providing Ireland with its first world class angling facility on a River.  Further planned developments will support the inclusivity of all in our sport and leave a legacy of angling for the area. “

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Martin Kearney, expressed his delight in anticipation of the forthcoming championships, saying, “Preparations are almost complete to welcome over 100 anglers from countries all across Europe to the magnificent Lower Bann River at Portglenone-Bellaghy. The site has an established angling heritage as home of a number of large coarse angling festivals, including the annual Bann Bonanza, and our investment will create a River venue capable of hosting further international competitions in years to come.”

He continued, “We would encourage the local community to come out to welcome the anglers in force at the Parade of Nations, a colourful affair which will see member of local community groups welcome the teams in procession as they make their way from Seamus Heaney Homeplace to the GAA Hall in Bellaghy on Thursday 27th June at 5.30pm.”

Waterways Ireland’s Sharon Lavin says: “We are delighted to welcome so many international visitors to experience exceptional angling along the Lower Bann. They will undoubtedly enjoy the new facilities installed along the river at Portglenone and we look forward to working on other similar collaborative projects in the future, in continuing to develop and promote the excellent angling product available.”

Ideal conditions at Delphi and grilse starting to run

David McEvoy reports from Delphi Lodge….

04 June: In my last update I did suggest that a change in weather conditions was on the way and I’m glad to say it certainly came. Total rainfall for the month of May 175.7mms (6.92”) of which 159.4mms (6.26”) fell in the last 7 days. Added to this we have had 32mms (1.26”) for the first three days of June and the system is well flushed after the long dry spell and looking wonderful with the river at 55 now, the lowest it’s been since the morning of the 29th, when it started the day at 5 and was 70 by 6pm and extremely coloured.

Delphi

As a result of this change the fish have woken up and we also have fresh fish running. First off the mark was Enrico Fantasia, who had a fish of 7lbs at Butler’s Point on Finlough on a Willie Gunn on the 29th. Despite the good water, fishing didn’t pick up until the 1stof June, when there were two fish landed. John Foley landed his first ever salmon, a sea liced fish of 4lbs5ozs in the Whin Pool on a Willie Gunn. Martin Ceillier followed this up in the evening with one from the Waterfall of 3lbs13ozs, also on a Willie Gunn.

There were three landed on Sunday, amazingly two off Finlough in horrendous conditions. Seamus O’Neill had two, one in the morning from the Schoolhouse of 7lbs12ozs on a Cascade. Seamus caught this fish on the far side, which is not unusual, but the water was running at 80 at the time, which I’m sure is the highest level a fish has ever been caught in the Schoolhouse at. He had a second on Finlough in the afternoon of 8lbs8ozs on a Delphi Collie. Martin Ceillier had the second fish of his visit off Finlough, wighing in 3lbs9ozs on a Willie Gunn.

There were four landed yesterday. Kurt Roth had two, one from the Turn Pool of 3lbs14.5ozs on a Cascade and the second from the Stream on Finlough of 3lbs6ozs on a Silver Stoat. Martin Cellier had his third and best fish of his stay, when he landed a cracking sea liced grilse of 6lbs8ozs on the same Willie Gunn. Fish of the day was a real family affair with Aine Lyons landing her first ever salmon, taken on Doolough and weighing in at 6lbs10.5ozs. The fishing excursion included herself, her husband and two children. Well done to her and hopefully it will be the start of a long and fruitful salmon fishing career.

This morning there were three landed on the river. Warren Osako had a beautiful fish of 8lbs13.5ozs from the Rock Pool on a Collie Dog. Bob Richerson had one of 3lbs12ozs from the Bridge Pool, also on a Collie Dog. Finally, Shauna Waterer after loosing a cracking fish, made up for it some what when she landed one of 3lbs9ozs in the Schoolhouse on a Cascade.

Conditions over the next few days should be ideal. Water levels will drop slowly as the lakes have been well filled. There is also plenty of availability over the next two weeks and I think the last few days is the start of what I think will be a good Grilse run, so if anyone is interested just give us a shout.

June starts with a flood and a few fish for the Erriff

Osgur Grieve reports from the Erriff River…

Erriff

01 June: We finally got our big flood yesterday after a very dry month of May. Dr Ansgifr Von Der Harr released a fine fresh spring salmon of 9lbs in the upper square pool on beat 9 and lost another in the coronation pool on beat 8 using a cascade tube. Regular angler Kevin Attride released a fine 10.5lbs spring salmon in the evening using a park shrimp conehead in the Coronation Pool on beat 8.  Ross Hunt also fished with us today and had a great morning landing 2 salmon  in the middle Garden Pool on a yellow and grey salmon fly. They weighed 4.5lbs and 7lbs.

04 June: Nice water today reading 1.2m in the morning, Gerard Coey jnr. was first off the mark landing a fresh grilse of 3.5lbs from the falls pool on a green butt Cascade in the morning. In the afternoon Jurgen Mantle released 2 wild grilse of 4lbs. and 4.5lbs. using an Ally’s shrimp from the sea pool and upper garden pool. Great to see a few grilse starting to appear, well done lads!

05 June: Regular angler John Phelan returned this morning and landed 2 salmon of 3.3lbs. and 14.5lbs on a Willie gunn tube in the falls pool, this is our biggest salmon of the season so far, well done John!

Record weight broken 5 times at Lanesborough International Coarse Angling Festival

Andy Burnett reports on the Lanesborough International Coarse Angling Festival…

Well that is the Lanesborough  International Coarse Angling Festival over for another year.  This year’s festival was a great success, and the inclusion of Lough Boderg proved to be the right decision.

2019 champion Perry Fairclough from London
2019 champion Perry Fairclough from London

It was incredible to see the festival record weight being broken no fewer than 5 times over the weekend, with weights of 72lb, 79lb, 87lb, 88lb, and 100lb 8oz being recorded.

On to the results; our 2019 Champion is Mr Perry Fairclough. Perry used to fish Irish festivals many years ago and only returned to Ireland this year after not coming for several years. Perry was here with a group of his family and angling friends from the Uxbridge Rover’s Match Angling Club to fish the Lanesborough festival.

At the weigh in

2nd place went to returning local lad Declan Kelly who now lives in London but is originally from Strokestown.

3rd place went to local angler Larry Parkes.
