Nore continues to fish very well – Piscari-Fly Update

Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene

How’s the Fishing

The Nore

The Nore continues to fish well, really well in fact with that fresh drop of water going through it now.

Ricki Croke picked up this nice trout there last week on his 2 weight Venator while out on the Nore.

The river is fishing really well. Lots of great dry fly to be had during the day and some nymphing. Some fish are starting to move out of the runs into the guides, getting ready for their long winter. Peter has had a few early morning sessions including Wednesday morning which was wet but lovely and a gorgeous Thursday last week where euro dinking was the most effective method.

European Fips-Mouche Championship

The Irish Team travelling to Italy in October for the Fips Mouche Europeans had a training weekend here in Thomastown. The lads did a lot of Fly tying, discussing patterns and stuff like that on Saturday night and then after a team meeting on Sunday morning they headed to the river for a few hours. Got a couple of nice trout and a lot of work done for the team as they prepare to head out. The lads are chomping at the bit to get out there now. It takes place from the 19th to the 25th October in Sondrio Italy. The lads will head out for practice for 5 or 6 days before the championship.

The team is Mark Driver (Captain), Kevin Oates (manager and angler), Peter Driver (angler), Jano Knazko (angler), Derek Cagney (angler) and Eanna O’Leary (angler).

Really hoping the lads get a run at the competition and just really looking forward to getting out there and getting stuck in.

Successful Catch & Release trout competition held on Lough Conn

Michael Murphy reports from Lough Conn…

The Mike Tiernan Memorial Cup, a collaborative effort between Foxford Angling Club and the renowned Tiernan Brothers angling shop, was held on Lough Conn on 24th August. This competition was a powerful statement of intent for conservation and sustainable angling. The competition’s most novel and progressive feature was its core principle: catch and release. This approach, increasingly seen as essential for protecting precious wild brown trout stocks, ensures the sport can be enjoyed by generations to come. The event demonstrated that competitive spirit and environmental stewardship can go hand-in-hand.

The winner was Michael Lynn with 3 trout, measuring 13.25 inches, 13.5 inches and 14.5 inches. Anglers reported good sport for the day with a lot of boats reporting fish caught.

Elsewhere, Padraig Traynor and visiting angler Simon McHale from Australia had good fishing in the Brackwansha area of Lough Conn on Tuesday 2nd September landing three trout over 13 inches and two further trout just under 13 inches.

Angling activity and catches remain low on the Moy

The River Moy in Foxford
Tough conditions on the Moy

Michael Murphy reports from the River Moy…

River Moy Angling Report for period 18-08-25 to 07-09-2025

Water levels in the Moy fluctuated greatly over this 3-week period with the early period seeing low water levels accompanied by elevated water temperatures causing some fisheries to remain closed. This was followed by a large flood which made angling unsuitable at times.  After the initial long period of low water, the first rise recorded at Ballylahan was on 28th August when the river rose from 0.26 m to a peak of just over 2 m on 3rd September before receding back down to 0.77 m by noon on Sunday 7th September.

Overall, angling activity was observed as being lower than normal.

The weather has been generally mild and mixed with fluctuating temperatures ranging from high teens to low twenties Celsius alongside frequent cloudy skies and scattered showers.

Moy Fishery

Unfortunately, due to elevated water temperatures the Moy Fishery remained closed for angling from midnight 14th August and it reopened at sunrise on 29th of August. Due to high water levels after the fishery reopened, angling activity was low on the fishery.

As part of the Foxford Riverfest held over the weekend of August 23rd the “Riverfest Irish Open Spey Championship” was held just below the bridge in Foxford. The winner was Michael Egan with a cast of 174 ft. The fishing competition didn’t proceed as the river was very low at the time and the fish remained very lethargic.

Reports were received of three salmon caught for the three-week period.

Cloongee Fishery

Team Ireland Conclude Campaign at FIPSed Coarse Angling Championships

The following report is taken from the NCFFI webpage:

Team Ireland has wrapped up their campaign at the 71st FIPSed Coarse Angling World Championship for Nations, held on the challenging waters of Lake Modrac in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The event brought together 30 nations to compete at the highest level of coarse angling.

After a difficult Leg 1, the squad delivered a more competitive performance in Leg 2, capitalising on reduced bleak dominance. Their efforts secured 23rd place for the leg, which elevated them to a 28th-place finish overall in the final standings.

Congratulations go to Team Italy, who emerged as World Champions, narrowly edging out Team Croatia by just half a point, with Team France taking the bronze medal in a closely fought contest.

While the results didn’t reflect the full extent of the team’s effort and preparation, the experience gained on this challenging international stage is invaluable. The squad can be proud of their efforts in representing Ireland at the highest level of coarse angling.

𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 I Tommy Dowd, Dara Finnegan, Phil Hartin, Dean Murray, Jason Ward, Jamie Murray (R) wish to sincerely thanks all those who supported them, including the NCFFI and team sponsors:  Keenan Bauer Motors, Tubertini UK LTD, Irish Bait and Tackle Limited and Marcel Van Den Eynde Ireland

And a heartfelt thank you to the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina for their warm welcome and wonderful hospitality throughout the championship. Their kindness and generosity made the experience all the more memorable

Barry Murphy wins latest Munster Shore League at Ventry

Chris O’Sullivan reports on the latest Munster Shore League match…

Between other fixtures, changing weather, marathon road closures and a stiff south-easterly gale, it was a wonder this competition went ahead at all – but it did!

Despite the setbacks, an excellent turnout of 43 anglers hit the beach. Road closures meant a 10am start instead of 11, but the earlier tide proved better for the dogs. The first two hours saw the bulk of the action, with dogs showing all along the stretch. Jim O’Brien and Richie Gormley both managed treble shots to get off to a flyer, while Mochara Fraher in Zone A steadily picked away at them too.

As the weather worsened and weed became a problem in Zone A, anglers in Zones B and C fished the edges and found smaller fish – flounder, school bass, and even a cracking double shot of golden grey mullet for Steven Watkins (Cork). On her debut, Sophie McGowan targeted flounder from the start, lifting the flatfish pool with a fine 37cm flounder and also winning the Ladies section, with Rosaleene Murphy 2nd and Fiona Ryan 3rd.

In Zone C, Barry Murphy made the most of the end peg, recording a superb 10-fish mixed bag to take the zone and overall win, ahead of Alan Mulcahy 2nd and Troy Francis 3rd. Alex Murphy finished 3rd in the Juniors with 3 flounder – good practice ahead of the World Championships in a few weeks – while Philip Kennedy Ryan was 2nd, enjoying a mini species hunt alongside his dad (who once again came out second best ).

Zone B went to Willie Kett with 4 dogs and a huss – some say it was pure talent, others point to the irresistible smell of sausages from his camper! David Keating was 2nd and Ricky Duffin 3rd.

Zone A belonged to Jim O’Brien who thrived in the stormy conditions, shrugging off flying tents, buckets and rod stands to land 10 dogs for the win. Richie Gormley, fresh from his All-Ireland success, was 2nd with 9 fish, including the pool-winning 86cm bull huss, while Chris O’Sullivan had to settle for 3rd after losing fish in the reef, despite two huss on his card. Junior angler Mochara Fraher also shone here, topping the Junior section, beating several seniors, and adding yet another title to his growing CV before heading to Spain.
Well done to all the winners! Not everyone could take home a prize, but everyone left with a little souvenir sand from West Kerry.

A big thanks to Troy Francis for pegging out 2km of beach, to Stephen O’Donovan for all the organisation alongside the Tralee Bay SAC committee, to Daniel Reynolds for compiling the scores, and to Chris O’Sullivan for the excellent report.

Numerous species and Ten Tope Tagged for Wicklow Boat Charters

Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters has had a busy week. On the one hand, he’s been helping client Bielen Christof notch up a range of species, including seven new ones. Species encountered included: Tope, Dogfish, Huss, Conger, Black Bream, Plaice, Grey Gurnard, Tub Gurnard, Poorcod, Pouting, Pollock, Ballan Wrasse, Corkwing Wrasse and Rockcook Wrasse.

At the same time, he was helping a group from UCC in their efforts to tag tope so that they can monitor their movements in Irish waters. Ten tope were tagged with satellite tags and conventional dart tags, and hopefully we can glean a lot of interesting data about this key angling species.

Another quiet week for Currane anglers

Copal

Not much to report from Lough Currane again this week. Winds were up on a few days over the last week but even on the more suitable days no fish were reported. There’s been a good bit of rain too and the Inny has seen a few floods. A few catch and release salmon were reported at the height of it.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

For more information on the daily conditions on Lough Currane, all the craic and news be sure to check out Vincent Appleby’s Salmon and Sea Trout blog for regular reports with back dates, petitions, public consultation notices, readers letters and videos and more of what’s happening in Waterville and beyond
