Near 40kg haul wins American Pairs on Garadice

This report from the organisers of this year’s American Pairs event:

That’s another year of the American Pairs wrapped up, and we’re delighted to say it was another huge success! Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, we had an incredible turnout with 23 pairs (46 anglers!) all showing up, fishing hard, and making it a brilliant match.

The fishing itself didn’t disappoint either plenty of bites across all banks, which is more than we could ask for. A massive thank you to everyone who came along and stayed right through to the presentation.

Close call for Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters

David Edwards, skipper of the Silver Dawn at  West Cork Charters, reports on a near blank on sharks…

Had a really tough, long day at Sharks on Tuesday this week.

With weather playing havoc for our Dutch anglers’ plans for the week, we decided on a 12 hour trip to make the most of a rare settled day.

A handful of fresh Mackerel and Scad were added to our baits and we headed offshore.

I was being kept busy fishing the ground while the lads set their Shark lines out.

Plenty of fish were being hauled from the depths, including some fine Whiting, Megrim and even a small Spurdog & Octopus.
The Shark lines were quiet…VERY quiet.

A couple of enquiries from Porbeagles, including one good sized fish, that followed the remains of a large Whiting live bait to the boat, was all we had to show for our efforts.

I was staring down the barrel of my third ever Irish Shark blank, and my first for 3 years, when finally we had a run that stayed connected.

Robin had the lightest set up and it took some time to get his good sized Blue Shark onboard.

A fine fish and a very welcome one.

Today was the definition of why it’s called fishing, not catching.

Troy Francis wins WCAD match at Ardmore

rainbow Ardmore

West Cork and District SAC fished their latest fixture at Ardmore on Sunday…

Caliso Bay was the original venue for our latest club match but the high winds and weed forced us to change to the sheltered Ardmore and this proved to be a good decision.

The match time was 7 – 11pm and fish showed up from the get go, with most anglers getting a few in the first hour. Going into the second hour quite a few ray had been landed, with the best ray a 72cm thornback from Troy Francis, which also won the pools. Troy followed this up with a treble shot of dogs to give him a commanding lead, leaving the rest of the field playing catch up.

On peg 6, Dave Keating took the round fish pool with an 89cm smoothhound – one of 3 hounds on the night for Dave. Well done Dave.

Going into the last hour of the match Troy added another couple of dogs to finish with a total of 18 fish, giving him a comfortable win. His winning card had 4 ray (Painted/Thornback) and 14 dogs – well done Troy.

Stephen O’Donovan took second place with 13 fish consisting of dogs, huss, gurnards, bass and whiting, while Dave Keating took third place with 9 fish with another mix of species including hounds, dogs, flounder and ray.

Results:

1st – Troy Francis: 18 fish, 982 pts
2nd – Stephen O’Donovan: 13 fish, 599 pts
3rd – Dave Keating: 9 fish, 580 pts

Good mix of fish and a lobster for shore anglers in Donegal

Jonathon O’Keeffe sent us in this report from his recent outing in Donegal…

Eoin Dunne and myself had a great weekend shore fishing in north Donegal this weekend.

Conger, Wrasse, dogfish, mackerel, pouting, pollack and a surprise, beautiful, blue/black lobster all landed and released.

The best fish was this pollack on a float rod from the rocks, it put up a cracking fight

Steady fishing on the Nore – PiscariFly Update

Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene

How’s The Fishing?

River Nore

Fishing is still steady enough even though this rain is not making too much of an impression on river levels. However the fishing is ok overall. Ricky and a few other customers out on the rivers of late picking up some nice fish and hopefully we will get another good bit of water soon which will really give us a good run into the end of September. Ricky got this cracker while out on the rivers.

Keith was fishing on the Nore he said it fished well with the little bit of fresh water. He managed to capture a couple of sea trout as a bonus.

Slovenia

Mark, Dave, Jamie and a few of the lads are in Slovenia at the minute for a weeks fishing. They are having some good fishing in between the thunderstorms. There are lots of thunderstorms at the moment so some of the rivers are a bit higher than they were expecting. However, they are still managing to get good fishing and having a good time out there in Slovenia. They are back on Thursday.

All Ireland Youths

The All Ireland Youths that was scheduled for last weekend had a little bit of a change with the weather that was coming in. The Federation cancelled the river event, however, the lake event went ahead. Congratulations to everyone that took part and stuck it out in those bad conditions and it wasn’t easy going. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to everyone who qualified for team Ireland next year.

Tafi Ulster 55 fish 142 place points

Tafi Munster 18fish 241 place points

Connaught 20 fish 262 place points

Leinster. 7 fish 276 place points.

Bass & Gurnards feature for South Shore SAC at Roney Point

18 members of South Shore SAC headed to Roney Point for the latest round of their Master Angler competition. The strong winds were throwing up some decent surf, and there was some colour in the water. On seeing the good surf, they expected some bass to be active, and that’s how it turned out, as the bass started to feature in catches. But they were surprised when numbers of small gurnards were also actively feeding in the surf and happy to take angler’s baits.

As high water approached, bites slackened off, but things picked up again once the tide had turned and some better quality fish, including dogs and a smoothy, started to show. But the fishing never really kicked into top gear as fish were hard to get, and that meant it was a close competition. Alby Allan took Zone B by the margin of a single centimetre, but the competition winner on the night was Jarek, who had a decent bag of bass and gurnards from Zone A.

Switch of venue works out for Ulster Krakens

The Ulster Krakens SAC was back in action last weekend for the latest round of their Master Angler series. The venue was originally planned to be Cushendun Beach, but on arrival, the conditions were poor and a quick decision was made to switch to Waterfoot Beach, which was in much better order.

The beach was quickly pegged and the 14 anglers got down to business as lines went in at 7.30. The top end of the beach started off fishing very well, with plenty of flats coming in, but weavers were also prolific, necessitating some gentle handling… As low water approached, most anglers began to target dogfish that were lurking a little further out, and they helped fill up the scorecards. At the end of the evening, Ally Nicholl’s haul of 22 counters was just enough to get him over the line as the winner on the night.

Full results as follows:

1st Ally Nicholl 22 counters +5 unders for 704points
2nd Andrew McCallion 21 counters +5 unders for 618 points
3rd Raymond “just lucky” McCann 19 counters +5 unders for 608 points
4th Craig Henderson 20 counters + 4 unders for 557 points
5th Stephen Kinning 17 counters + 5 unders for 483 points

Big Corrib Perch for Tom

Galway angler Tom Canavan was in touch with a report on a fine perch he caught recently. Tom, who describes himself as a leisure angler with a growing interest in freshwater fishing, was spinning on the River Corrib in Galway City, around the Quincentennial Bridge on the university campus.

Using a Mepps spinner, he hooked and landed a cracking perch, the biggest he had ever seen. Other local anglers confirmed it was one of the best perch ever caught along that stretch. A good Catch of the Week too.

Unfortunately, Tom didn’t have a scales or measure with him, but the photo shows the size of the fish – we believe the technical term is a “cracker”! The fish was of course released after the photo.

Well done Tom on a fine catch!
