White skate caught off Clare coast

Both the Clare Dragoon and Lady Gwen II  have been getting some great fish off the coast of Clare in the last week,  aided in part by the beautiful weather.

Anglers on the Lady Gwen II have been getting a good mix of ling, codling, haddock, pouting, pollock, coalies, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse and mackerel. The mackerel are out there in numbers but some days getting on the shoals is not so easy.

skate
A White Skate of around 40kg. Nice fish on a 12-20lb rod

Luke Aston’s anglers on the Clare Dragoon have fared much the same, but also added a few skate and their first tope of the year to the tally. The skate encountered were a little un-common. One was a white skate. A first for the Irish Angling Update since this blog was started.

Salmon to 15lb caught and released on Munster Blackwater, but not easy in bright conditions

Some great fishing has been reported on the Munster Blackwater in recent days as conditions improve for angling…

salmon
Ollie’s first salmon #CPRsavesfish

30 May: Fishing at Fortwilliam Fishery Sean Power had a 13lb fish off the Glenmore beat in the morning. Just before Lunch there was a beautiful first salmon for Ollie Flanaghan fishing the  Blackwater Salmon Fishery beats with Glenda Powell as the temperature hit 24C. Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery reported 2 fresh fish landed and released today and a very big fish lost on a small Cascade tube at Ballincurrig in the afternoon by Kealan O’Toole.

01 June: Harry Greene had a fantastic 12lb fish caught today at Cable Island on the Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery.

05 June: There were 2 fish landed on Glenmore at Fortwilliam Fishery and both released safely. One on fly of 12lbs and another on spinner of 8lbs. The Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery had 4 fish hooked and 1 landed and released today throughout the fishery. Water clarity is better after recent rise and coming days are looking promising.

06 June: Fortwilliam Fishery reports that the water levels are dropping away nicely and clarity is improving. Gauge reading was .28m.  More silver caught and released today on the fly at Ballincurrig by our guest Patrick. The Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery  reports wore silver caught and released today on the fly at Ballincurrig by their guest Patrick.

Catch and release
#CPRsavesfish. A 15lb salmon is released by Patrick O’Leary…

07 June: Patrick O’Leary was back in action at Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery  with this cracking fly caught salmon of 15/16lbs in the morning at Cable Island. It’s great to see guys returning fish like this. The fishery reports that there are fish moving but they’re proving tough to catch due to the bright conditions. Meanwhile over on the  Blackwater Salmon Fishery beats, Declan Egan, coached by Glenda Powell, had his first salmon ever on his 10th cast. Not a bad ratio. And the second fish of the day for the same group which was also a first, caught and safely released by Tom O’Dwyer.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

'Jamebo' Transition Year students complete eir/IFI Angling Adventure project

Inland Fisheries Ireland was delighted to attend the recent graduation ceremony and presentation of certificates to transition year students from Christian Brothers School (CBS) James Street, Dublin 8 (aka ‘Jamebo’), after their recent successful completion of the second annual Angling Adventure flyfishing project, run in co-operation with eir and IFI.
Following the success of the programme in 2017, it was expanded this year to cover even more elements of fishing including coarse, pike and fly fishing, casting, fly tying, and environmental awareness.
The 13-week programme with IFI and the inner-city Dublin school has been very generously funded by eir under its remit of corporate social responsibility to communities and the environment.

Ciaran Ward (eir), ‘Jamebo’ student David Eduardo, and Val Fitzpatrick (IFI)

Alongside classroom workshops delivered by experts in the field of fly tying and casting, field trips were organised at Lough Ramor, Virginia, Co. Cavan, Annamoe Trout Fishery in Co. Wicklow and the K Club’s pike fishing lakes in Co. Kildare, as well as an environmental field trip to the River Dodder in Dublin.
Attendance throughout the course was excellent and pupils were fully engaged with the course content and their mentors. The programme ran from January to April and it is hoped that the participants will have reached a standard high enough to obtain the President’s GAISCE Award.
“This project has huge benefits for all partners,” said Ciaran Ward, organiser of the programme for eir. “From our perspective, eir sees this project as a good way to demonstrate being a good corporate citizen. Through teaching these teenagers fishing skills, hopefully, some may go on to become future custodians of our rivers and lakes benefitting the participants and, for IFI, it is an opportunity to introduce more young people to angling.”

Photo: The ‘Jamebo’ students out fishing

Brian Beckett, Director of the Eastern River Basin District, Inland Fisheries Ireland, said: “A contributing factor to the success of this eir/IFI initiative is the tremendous support from the angling community, who have given freely of their time through the running of the programme to pass on their knowledge of particular disciplines of angling. And, of course, an added benefit is that the mentors on the programme are positive role models for the students. It is also hoped that these youngsters will put their newly learned fishing skills into practice and take up a hobby that can be lifelong.”

Ukulele band try the fishing on Cork Harbour

Richie Ryan had a booking with a difference recently. The guide takes up the story.

In 2016 Gilbert’s Lane, a  group in from Cobh , decided to organise a Ukulele Festival in the town. The connection here is that both my wife and sister in law are members of this particular group. I know I’m biased, but they are really good and great craic too! This year “Nico and the Kapiolani Boyz “ decided to return to Cobh having enjoyed the festival so much the first time round. I was tasked with taking them for a quick fishing trip on Cork Harbour before they flew back to France. I had met the group before and really enjoyed their music and their company.

Looking for fish…

How do you catch a fish for guys who’ve barely  held a rod before ? I decided to troll for a while with 2 anglers sharing the rods on each track. A few hits at the lure but no fish. Time was short and I wasn’t able to travel too far as a result. I then resorted to casting and letting them retrieve but that didn’t work either. Things were not going well. The bonus was that the day was beautiful and I could see the group were really enjoying the scenery. An hour had passed and we hadn’t landed a fish yet. Jigging a soft plastic on the bottom was next. It’s hard to get the knack of making the lure dance and look natural on the seabed. I could see fish on the sounder at the bottom and I dropped a Black Minnow to them. Two flicks of my wrist and a pollack saved the day. The “Boyz” were seriously impressed, but it is simply down to technique, it takes a while to master though. A deadly way to catch fish , particularly bass , if you can get the right rhythm going – pardon the pun “Boyz“

Blazing sunshine on Currane but some salmon and the odd sea trout about

Lough Currane and River Inny updates from Vincent Appleby

Kerry Sunset
Kerry Sunset

30/5/18 Again the Lough Currane anglers were scorched as the sun takes control of the fishing   and one can say without any fear of contradiction the only fish to be smoked are the Lough Currane Fishermen and fair play to those anglers that are sticking to their flies and lures. Weather calm this morning and come after noon there was a nice breeze from the West. Yesterdays Weather, Maximum air temperature 21.4c.

31/5/18 All the Salmon headlines come from the Bungalow and at www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com UK Angler, Mr. Graham Roberts, caught a fine 8lbs. Salmon, while trolling with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Now to the Sea Trout department, an angler trolling on his own caught a fine Sea Trout in 3lbs. Class give or take and staying with Sea Trout it was reported to me that there are a few Sea Trout showing which is great to hear. Now to the weather, another warm day but not as hot as yesterday, mind you I say that one Gillie was telling me yesterday he went into have lunch on one of the Islands and within 10 minutes the Currane Midges attacked and I can tell you it didn’t take long for the anglers to get the hell out of it. Wind flat calm up until about 2pm then there was light breeze from the West. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 20.1c.

1/6/18 Straight to the Bungalow of  www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Dublin fly angler, Mr. Brian Quearney, while fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of  www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 8lbs. Salmon. Now we head over to the South Side and at www.lakelandshouse.com German angler Mr. Michael Rieger, caught a fine 3lbs. Sea Trout while trolling with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandsouse.com Wind West with good cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 18.7c.

2/6/18 I start in the backdate department, on the world famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie In the last few days, UK angler Mr. James Henchey, while fly fishing on the Pool caught a fine Salmon. Now we head up stream to Lough Currane, it was reported to me an angler while trolling on his own also caught a fine Salmon. Now back to the present and we start in the early morning department, local gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of  www.fishingwithdom.com caught a fine Salmon while trolling on his own. Wind calm all day with good cloud cover plus light showers in the late afternoon and very humid. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.0. Maximum air temperature 19.2c.

3/6/18  We start again in the back date department, Yesterday local angler Mr. Gerard Cronin caught a fine 6 lbs. Salmon on the troll last night on the evening shift, staying in the backdate department we head down stream to the world famous Butler Pool and of www.watervillegolflinks.ie UK angler Mr. James Henchey, caught two salmon in the last few days and his fishing party  left the best to last as you will read in today’s notes. We start today’s facts on Lough Currane and sadly it was a suntan lotion day as the sun blazed on the Currane anglers as they cast their flies into the  points and ledges but to no avail and on the lure front it was all quiet on the SW front, so on that pessimistic note we head down stream and finish today’s facts on an optimistic note on the world famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie and Catch of the day and that goes to UK angler Mr. James Monks and for good reason, he caught a cracker of a 11 lbs. Salmon on the fly and I believe this was James’s first visit to Waterville and I’m sure after that performance it won’t be his last. Wind West light all day. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 16.6c.

salmon
Michael stands in for James!

4/6/18 All the Salmon headlines come from the Bungalow on the North Side and at www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com UK angler Mr. Frank Warburton, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of  www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught a fine 4lbs. Salmon / Grilse on the troll and considering the bright conditions they did mighty well and for the rest of the Lough Anglers it was all quiet on the NW front like the wind today with bright sunshine all day. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 18.7c.

5/6/18 Lough Currane is mourning this day and for good reason and its with great sadness that I have to tell you that renowned Salmon and Sea Trout Angler, Mr. William Timmermans, RIP, of Waterville and Holland sadly past away yesterday. On Behalf of all the Waterville Fishery and all the good people of Waterville and Glencar and all of Co. Kerry I would like to send our Sincere Sympathies to his good Wife, Mrs. Mariet Timmermans and all their Family and friends. Well William you may be gone and you certainly won’t be forgotten and for good reason, you fished the Waterville Fishery for well over fifty years and I believe William caught his first Salmon on the troll going by the Holly Island and in that fifty years plus of fishing the Waterville Fishery, William caught a good many more and on that note I will say, William RIP.
