Lene fishing well

Mick Flanagan reports on fishing in the Midlands lakes.

Trout on dry olives

Once again I had a few enjoyable days on Lene with pal Marty Smith, and the trout really took a shine to our dry flies, and also we fished wets with some success. Quite a few anglers were on Lene over the Bank Holiday, and many were buzzer fishing in calm conditions. It’s an art in its own, and really I can’t get a handle on it. Anyway I had a chat with Eugene Fagan from Dublin, and he reckons once I get hooked on it, there is no looking back. Eugene feature in our 60th Anniversary of Lene some weeks, and is originally a Multyfarnham lad.

Erriff off the mark with first salmon

Padraic O’Malley reports that the first salmon has been landed on the Erriff for 2018. The fish was a wild fish weighing 9.5lbs, and was caught by Alan Coles from Essex in England.

The sparkling silver fish was caught in the Garden Pool and took a small Cascade fly. Alan was fishing with Will Wright, also from Essex and both are regular visitors to the Erriff.

Padraic reports good water levels at the moment, with the gauge showing 1.1, ideal conditions for flyfishing, and fresh fish running the river too.

The Erriff is a spate river draining beautiful mountain scenery and entering the sea at Killary Harbour, near Leenane. The river is split into 9 beats, and is flyfishing only for the most part. The river provides quality fishing for salmon and sea trout in spectacular surroundings. There is also lake fishing available on Tawnyard Lough, on one of the tributaries, providing sea trout fishing from July to September.

Olive hatches on L. Arrow produce a number of nice trout

Trout fishing on Lough Arrow kicked off a couple of weeks ago with anglers reporting hatches of Duckfly.  Warm spells during the day saw some sporadic hatches of Olives but no mayfly hatches have been reported so far. However, some of the anglers who ventured out and put enough time into it were rewarded with nice catches. Amongst the few were John Murray who had 4 fish up to 2.5 lbs., Ken Murray with 4 fish up to 2 lbs. and Gerry Kelly with 2 trout up to 1.5 lbs.

International group enjoys day out on Killala Bay

Located on the western extremity of the continental shelf the island of Ireland has some of the most lightly fished rivers and lakes in Europe.

Donal Kennedy reports

On Friday 4th May an international party of anglers from Ireland, Australia and Italy set out from Killala Harbour for a day’s fishing out in Killala Bay. The weather was OK with moderate winds from the south. The drift was slow and steady allowing the skipper to drift over some hard ground and it was not long before the anglers started catching fish. The catch consisted mainly of pollack and coalfish. As the day progressed the pattern was the same with some fine fish being caught. To top off the day plenty of fine big mackerel were caught. The party returned safely to harbour well pleased with their day out.

Angling suspended at The Lough and at Belvelly Lake in Cork

Inland Fisheries Ireland is currently investigating the cause of multiple carp mortalities at The Lough in Cork city and at Belvelly Lake, Cobh, Co. Cork.

As of today, some 450 carp have been removed from The Lough and over 20 from Belvelly, with live samples brought to the Irish Marine Institute for analysis.

While the samples from The Lough showed a heavy presence of trichodiniasis, the primary cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Angling has been suspended at both locations until further notice.

There are no reports of fish health issues at any other carp fishery.

A carp in The Lough

As a precautionary measure, IFI has temporarily suspended angling at nearby Inniscarra and Carrigadrohid coarse fisheries in order to reduce the risk of cross contamination. This will be reviewed once the cause of the mortalities is known.

We would remind all anglers and, in particular, those who may have fished the affected waters in the last number of weeks, to follow appropriate disinfection procedures for all gear and to comply with local notices and bio-security measures. We thank them for their co-operation.

There are no reports of fish health issues at any other carp fishery,

Updates on this and the status of the angling suspension will be available at www.fisheriesireland.ie and https://fishinginireland.info/ and Facebook.
