There was one salmon reported for the week and another reported lost. The fish was caught spinning and was sealiced.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

O'Hare runs away with title in Bluebell Winter League

Bluebell Community Angling Club fished their last match of their Winter League at the weekend….
15 April: Today saw the last match of the Winter League take place with all trophies up for grabs. There were no clear leaders going into the event, with very little between between the members. That all changed when Darren O’Hare struck into a fine pike of 13 lb, his first fish of the whole Winter League! His catch saw him race up the leader board and he landed leapfrogged ahead again when he caught a second pike of 7lb 15oz,  putting him in front on weight.

Just as the finish time came he landed one more pike making him the outright winner of the winter league as there were only 4 fish landed today, 3 for Darren O’Hare and 1 for John Ebbs.

Good piking on Ree ahead of International Festival

pike
103cm pike from Lough Ree

John Devaney reports that a couple of Belgian anglers, staying in Athlone with Mark Egan, for the upcoming Lough Ree International Pike Festival caught some good fish while practising  at the weekend.

Guy Brockmans and Roger Wellens were thrilled with this trout over 13lb. caught  in Lower  L. Ree and they also had a  pike of 103cm in the same area.

The Festival gets underway today, and a huge number of anglers and boats took to the lake to compete for the change of winning €1000. First prize is a guaranteed €1000 and is sponsored by Westmeath County Council and will be awarded to the angler with the longest fish caught over the three days. There is also the chance of winning the World Cup prize of €1000. This goes to the boat with the longest overall length of pike by measuring the single longest fish caught each day.

A good few days on Carrowmore, 15 salmon caught

Bangor Erris Angling reports that although the wind picked up on Carrowmore Lake the fishing remained productive over the weekend…

April 12: Temperatures were still in the low teens at best and winds were light for the most part but overall angling conditions on the lake are excellent. Daniel Irvine had a fantastic few days on the lake landing a springer approx 10.5 lbs on Wednesday and then a whopping beautiful fresh springer of 12lb plus on Thursday. 8 fish were landed in total and 2 were released. And the best of the day was a 12lbs. salmon taken by Daniel Irvine.

April 13: Not a bad day on the lake but it was a little cooler today and very slack winds which made angling difficult. In the end 3 fish were caught and 1 was released.

April 15: As the weather is going to be a problem in the next few days we will have a few quiet days on the lake from Sunday onwards. The conditions turned out very rough on Saturday but we still had good fishing. Despite the strengthening winds 4 fish 2 were released.

A few Beltra beauties, settled conditions will improve fishing

There were a few more salmon reported from Lough Beltra in the last week. Weather has been very mixed, like the rest of the country.

Peter Jackson had a 14lb fish on April 12th at Tommys Wall.  The salmon took a shrimp fly. Godfrey Holden caught and released an 11lbs salmon at Clarke’s Point on a Beltra Peter.

The weekend was quiet (in angling terms, not the weather) and only one fish was reported. On Sunday Simon Kaye had his first Beltra fish off a breezy Clarke’s point on a Beltra Peter, a nice 9lb salmon.

Yesterday, 17 April, saw 3 fish caught on the lake. Pat McHale had 2 salmon. First was a 10.5 lbs fish on a Hairy Mary at the Quarry and the second was about 8lbs and it took a Silver Badger at Morrison’s. Rocky Moran had an 8lb fish also.

Galway finally sees the first salmon

It was a late Spring in Galway, and with high water levels dominating for much of February and March, it was no surprise the first salmon here was late.

Fergal Cormican, a native of Nun ‘s Island in Galway City, but now residing in Rosscahill, Co. Galway was delighted to grass the first salmon of the season on the Weir in 2018. The fish was caught on Friday the 13th, with 4 sluice gates open on the weir. The fresh-run salmon tipped the scales at 4.72 kg ( 10.62lbs ), and was caught on a flying C spinner from the high bank. The fish as is customary was donated to a local charity, the beneficiary this year is Galway Hospice.

Water levels have increased again following Monday’s heavy rain, but anglers are turning up with a renewed sense of optimism now that the first fish is in the book. Late April into May is traditionally a good time for big fish in Galway, so we hope to see some nice springers featuring in reports over the next few weeks.

Well done Fergal!
