On World Book Day, we remember our colleague, Dr Martin O’Grady, who passed away recently. His beautifully illustrated book, ‘Brown Trout in Ireland’, deals with all aspects of the trout’s ecology and biology. It is written in a very readable style and would appeal, particularly, to the inquisitive angler who wishes to know more about his quarry. It is an ideal present for the angler or student of natural history and an essential addition to their library. To secure your own copy, please visit our online shop: http://shop.fishinginireland.info/.
Today is World Book Day and we’d like to offer a few suggestions for a list of favourite angling books. This is by no means a definite list and is not in any particular order of preference. Most of these are available to buy or to order via your local bookshop or from the likes of Amazon, AbeBooks, eBay, etc. If you have some book suggestions, please feel free to post them under this post in the Comments section on our Facebook page. (Thanks to Paul O’Reilly, Myles Kelly and Willie Roche of IFI for their input.)

With just one round to go all eyes are on the ERNE Anglers Winter League and who will make the top 18 for the final which carries a prize fund of almost £2000…
Round nine of the Winter League took place on Sunday, on a freezing River Erne. Tony Green reports on the bitterly cold easterly wind, and crystal clear waters and a tough day on the cards for the 25 anglers that turned out. Inishmore Viaduct suffered in the deep freeze and the whole section blanked! However Carrybridge and Bellanaleck proved that the Erne can still provide a surprise or two…
Lyndon Reid came out on top at Bellanaleck with an excellent 9.900kg. Just pipping Tony Kersley 9.400kg at Carrybridge. Third place went back to Bellanaleck where Simon Huthwaite had 7.340kg with Kenny Seddon fourth at Carrybridge with 5.580kg. Everyone was catching small roach on the pole.
Gus Greaves continued his great winter league form with another section win at Derrycharra. Alan Scollan came out on top in a close section at Queen Elizabeth Road.
With one round remaining, the league’s 18 qualifying places for the final couldn’t be tighter…

Vincent Appleby has an update from Lough Currane where the spring salmon have started to play ball…
A hungry robin in Waterville
22/2/18 Lough Currane was all quiet in all departments this day, so one can say that todays notes are short and sweet but that didn’t stop the old Robin Red Breast looking for a portion for something to eat this cold day with the wind coming from the SE and overcast with the odd light shower. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 9.5c.
23/2/18 It was a wild day with a fresh to strong and gusty SE wind out there on Lough Currane and if any boats ventured out all they caught was a wind tan and tangles. Just for the record in the last few days there has a good few Kelts caught. Wind as already stated. Yestterdays weather. Maximum air temperature 9.1c.
Steven O’Neil caught this 10lb fish, his first salmon, on his first day fly fishing
24/2/18 Fly Angler Mr. Steven O’Neil of Cork takes all the angling news today and for good reason, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGilliddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught his first ever 10lbs. Salmon on the fly, not alone was it Steven’s first Salmon it was his first time ever fly fishing and in the words of his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, 5 minute lesson in the art of fly fishing and the rest is history. Wind SSE fresh and overcast and cold. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.6mm. Maximum air temperature 9.1
25/2/18 Lough Currane was All quiet on the SW front in all departments and with a massive cold wind coming from the East or as they are calling it the beast from the East, so you can say My Noble Anglers were frozen out toady in their manipulations. Sadly it couldn’t be said for the Kerry Fire Service who I might add were doing a Fantastic job on putting out Gorse Fires and protecting the good people of the ring Kerry today, So Anglers take note when dining on the Lake. Wind ESE fresh with good cloud cover.
Michael Roden with his salmon reported to weigh 17lb
26/2/18 Ireland is ready and waiting for the Beast from the East, well I have News for you, because Lough Currane produced its own Beast from the East with a Beast of a 17lbs. Salmon caught by Mr. Michael Roden on the troll while fishing with Snr Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and fair play to Mr. Michael Roden, because he and his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea have caught the biggest Salmon in Ireland so far this season, I hope I’m Correct on this statement. Wind ESE then veered East and as you can see by the photo there was plenty of sunshine out there on the Lake.
27/2/18 Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front and that’s not surprising because there was one hell of a party, celebrating Michael’s 17 lbs. Salmon in the Lobster Bar last night. Wind NE light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover at times and very cold and if one takes the wind chill into the equation it felt like sub zero. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 7.3c.
28/2/18 The Lough Currane anglers were frozen out this day, which isn’t surprising it was sub o out there and felt like minus 3 and worse is to come tomorrow with Kerry on a red alert from 4pm until 12 o’clock Friday, Wind NE fresh with snow showers late this afternoon. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 4.5c.
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
Brendan Jervis reports on the Newbridge and District Pike Anglers Winder Cup fished in the North East of the country last weekend…
26 February: We had 18 members out yesterday for the Winder Cup. Fishing was very slow with strong easterlies all day. All members decided to set out deadbeats for the day as it was so cold on the lake. The weather itself was beautiful; sun was shining for most of the day but the pike just weren’t feeding well. There were a few nice fish lost, and some nice fish where landed. We had 11 pike caught and released. the biggest was 22lb 10oz and there were 3 other double.
